The ABC's the Checkout did a quite extensive piece on pet insurance. bottom line -barely worth it with all the exclusion clauses.

We are getting a puppy soon and have done a lot of research into whether we should have insurance. Obviously all insurance companies are in it to make money, same way we pay contents, health etc is that you usually end up worse off.

Base price for our puppy (not with woolworths) is about $320 a year for 80% coverage up to about $12000 or so.
I realise there are plenty of ways they can get out of paying, but if it even covers us once at $6000, this is more than i'll pay in premiums for the life of the dog so at worst come out even.

Everyone says to put the money away and pay the bill out of that, but if it gets sick at 3 years of age, $1000 isn't going to go far. Of course the money is not really an issue and we can afford to care for the dog no matter what happens, to me its whether we'd spend $15000 in the first place, not whether we have the money.

Bit of a rolling out of thoughts sorry, i've read plenty that people have problems and the exclusions make it poor, but the alternative is probably worse for me personally (making a health decision purely based on cost, i'm a pretty heartless bastard :)

I wish my mates discussed pet insurance with me over a beer or 5…

Are you the pet he insured?

Don't let the pet know that it is insured. Might promote reckless behaviour.

  • I recommend insurance and plan to get it if I ever get another pet. My cat passed away mid last year just shy of his 19th, and would of made it past 20 easily if it wasnt for that bloody cancer from a gum wound. He had a low immune system so every scratch had a high chance to become infected. I was happy if a year passed without needing to go to the vet. Was a usual 6 month per visit. I spent about 16-17k on vet bills while he lived. The last 2 years was 6 grand alone. Both those years I wasnt working. Insurance would of really been handy. Sadly I found out about it after he turned 10 and 8 was the cut off to get insurance.
