PC Byte: WD Red NAS 4/5/6TB HDD $201.95/$267.95/$329.95 + Shipping

70

Another WD Red special, I am not sure why Roland has not posted this earlier but I thought I would share this now that I have spotted it. The 6TB unit is a particularly good price, even the 5TB is cheaper than the last deal (shame the 4TB isn't)

  • Not looking at the moment, but that's a good price for the 6TB. Thanks for sharing.

I'm looking at setting up a NAS within the next month or two, mainly for streaming, so I'll keep an eye out for these again in the future.

But would anybody recommend what kind of setup I should go for? I'll be streaming a lot of HD stuff, and already have around 6-7gb of videos/music.

I would be looking at the NetGear ReadyNAS and Synology units…probably 4 bays or more. Both these manufacturers offer propriortry RAID systems that allow you to expand your volumes as you need (XRaid/XRaid2 and SHR - Synology Hybrid RAID).

I currently used a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 (RNDU4000) which is now discontinued. I chose this unit as it was Intel powered and also allowed for DLNA + iTunes servers natively. I use the DLNA server feature to stream video and audio. I would suggest looking for a unit with similar capabilities if you intend to steam video/audio. My other tip would be try to find something with a bit of extra RAM (the more the better).

If I was not saving money for an upcoming trip I would have bought a few drives from our friend Roland….I have two empty slots and my 2x2tb setup is looking like it needs some more storage. I would love to have a 4x6tb setup

      • Thanks, I've been looking out for a Synology unit. I'll keep the NetGear ReadyNAS in mind as well.

I've also heard good things about QNAP, which seem to be a bit cheaper than Synology. Would you recommend that at all?

For what it's worth, I'm using a QNAP at home, a fairly old model. It has served me well but, then again, I'm not a very demanding taskmaster on my NAS :P

  • That 6tb is getting so close to my $0.05 per Gigabyte trigger point.

I do like that you allow a max of 5 units though! makes it easier to purchase for a raid/zfs set up!

Heh. I was pushing for 8 (since the largest, readily available NASes tend to be eight bays) but, sadly, no cigar :(

      • 8 would have been nice….even if you dont have 8 bays you may have more than one NAS (ie 2x 4-bay…one backing up the other).

  • Will these 6TB fit in the HD caddy of Synology 1512+ ? I vaguely remember reading somewhere the holes on the HDD are in different position for 6TB models.

    • It should. I've got 6TB Red in my 1812+.

I have not heard that one before… I will have to ask someone to check in the office tomorrow…

      • Is it only the 6TB drives that may not fit?

        • The holes in my 6TB Reds are in the same spot as for my 3TB. 6TB fit no problem in my Synology NAS.

    • Seems like it's all the same on my end?

  • <sniff><sniff> Went to buy some 6TB drives and only 2 left.

I guess I won't delay if they go on special again.

      Sorry Geek Girl! :(

I'll make sure we get more stock next time! :)

      • I was just about to pull the trigger on a bunch of 6TB drives as well, and was upset to see that they'd all gone.

Is there any way to get an alert when these are available again?

        -edit-
I just created an account on your site so I'd be ready to purchase. But it won't let me log back in - are there any strange rules re: password characters or length (I created a complicated password with 24 characters).

        • Hey AdrianW,

We don't currently have an auto-notification system, my apologies. The best way to keep abreast of these deals is to visit our specials page (i.e. the page linked) once in a while or keep an eye on Ozbargain! ;)

Could PM me your account details so I can have a look?
