  • Be aware you might need a U.S. plug converter for the adapter. I did for my ASUS chromebox when it arrived from Amazon — luckily had one handy. The ASUS power unit is 240v-ready, and I assume the HP one is the same, but obviously check before you buy. Love my ASUS chromebox chrooted for Ubuntu on an external USB3 drive!

It can do 240 volts, and while a adapter will work, it's better to get a cloverleaf to AU mains cable. The HP has a separate power unit with a cloverleaf connector, it's not integrated like the Asus. In this sense, the HP is a better unit.

The HP also has a faster SSD than the Asus.

On the downside, the HP has a much smaller internal heatsink on the CPU, runs subsequently hotter, requires higher fanspeeds and is louder to the point of being quite audible under load. The Asus is a lot quieter.

The HP also has a single memory slot only, while the Asus has two, meaning the Asus can be upgraded to 4GB with a 2GB module, the HP needs a 4GB module.

Finally, the HP does not come with a VESA mount, like the Asus does.

It's still a good buy at that price, though I wouldn't recommend it over the Asus if it wasn't significantly cheaper.

  • You can Install WIn8.1 and works well with the exception of audio over HDMI so not ideal for HTPC well not quite yet.

Unless you run your HTPC on Linux, or just use OpenELEC for a more appliance-like feel. No need for Windows unless you have very specific requirements?

  • bought it, together with turtle beach micro2 from amazon and samsung 21.5" monitor with keyboard/mouse set from kogan. all up full desktop setup for $360. (i already have a spare 32gb usb 3.0 which i plan to use to run windows 8.1 on this machine)
thanks for the deal, up voted for sure! ^^

    • Cheap little setup for when you already have a Windows 8.1 licence.

For people who still need to factor a Windows licence into the price, I would not recommend the Chromebox. The Zotac ZBOX-BI320-U-W2 has the newer 2957U processor, equally comes with 2GB of RAM, and has an internal 64GB SSD with Windows 8.1 already pre-installed. It is, as such, fully Windows-compatible, and there is absolutely no modding required, unlike with the Chromebox. It is more expensive at US $219.99 (excluding shipping), but considering what that includes I'd have to recommend it over the Chromebox as a cheap Windows setup.
