    Telstra network? 4G enabled?

    • +9

Optus 4G. Per kb billing. Its right there if you clicked the link.

  • Looks ok, anyone have experience with them? Anything better out there for 3GB Optus 4G for $35?

    • +2

      https://www.betterlife.org.au

$33 with a Health Care Card ($39 without one). Unlimited and 3GB. 4G and per kb.

      • What happens after you no longer have a health care card? Does anyone know?

        • +1

I would imagine that as long as you sign on with one, things remain ongoing. Problems, maybe, if you want to jump up to the higher plans. They might request card details again.

      • +1

I know that this is what their homepage says but that information is no longer accurate.

You only need a health care card in order to get the $33 plan for $31.

You do NOT need a health care card in order to avail yourself of the $33 plan or any of the higher plans.
I confirmed that with their client services staff and it is also mentioned in their FAQ:

        https://www.betterlife.org.au/faq-page#n11

A current Health Care Card number if you are applying for the $31 plan

I can confirm that several people have now ordered online a SIM for their $33 plan WITHOUT having or supplying a health care card number and are using the service with no issues.

        • +1

If they're able to sustain the new plan prices for people without a HC card, it is going to make things very interesting for other providers.

The changes and the HC stepdown to $31 on the 3GB plan must have happened very recently. Odd, though, that the HC card number window is still on the order page, but with no mention of the lower price.

At $33/31 for Betterlife, Jeenee will need to shift somewhat, especially given their call cap…

If the 6GB plan can now be had for $43 without a HC card (??), then Amaysim should also be worried. Extra GB plus 4G access for $2 less…

Note that Optus and resellers are counting downloads and uploads in the allocated data allowances.

    • +4

      So do Telstra.

    • +1

      they all count both ways.

  • +4

i have been with them for a few months, does what it says on the box

i personally like that my service contributes to giving a free one to a person with a disability, they are a not for profit

  • Spintel.

  • +2

    Good value.

Personally I'd recommend Spintel over Jenee because they offer a similar product (Optus 4G with KB billing) but with flexible PAYG style billing. If you use up your allowance they simply bump you up to the next category.

For my usage I get away with $25-$30 but even if I use a lot more, I only pay a few dollars extra.

    • Spindle seems pretty reasonable, 2.5gb of data is a decent amount and my plan would be about $28. Do they offer nano sims? Good to see mobile phone plans are coming down in price.

    • +2

Is there any reason to choose anything except the lowest inclusions on Spintel, since they'll just bump you up if you go over it?

If you go over an inclusion one month, does it keep you on the bumped inclusion for the next month (can you move back/do you have to do that manually), or do you return to your original plan next month?

      • You have to manually move back so as long as you're willing to do that every month then it's great value.

    • +1

Agree with megaphat … the Jeenee deal is not bad … Spintel is a bit better as you are safe from a bill shock and just a bit more when you use more.

I would sign up with them but the lowest level is $18 (3x the $6 pack) … this is pretty high when you don't use your phone at all. Still haven't found my dream phone plan (I still use a $1 TPG card and pay an average of $5/month … but my usage is pretty restricted).

      • +8

do you make your friends call you all the time?

        • +3

hehe … how did you figure that out !!! ;-)

          Other Option:

Use Instant Messaging Apps to chat (hardly uses any data) and some have even voice connections (Skype, Viber, …) My plan has only 50MB included in the $1 … but that gives you a few calls and then it is only $0.02 per excess MB.

My wife has a $18 plan with plenty of Data and included phone … most of the time I just use her phone for longer calls or tether from her phone to use the data. I mainly try to connect to WIFI.

And in the worst case I use my 10 cent calls … (hey … I still pay $5 a month).

I have this phone plan now for 3 years and paid in total (3x12x$5= $180) … a cheap phone plan is around $30 (3x12x$30= $1080) —> 900$ saving ( $300 per year.) Usually you save the most with recurring payments such as mobile, insurance, broadband, electricity, phone, … ).

I like the concept that I pay for the usage … makes you use less …

        • +1

@mini_wombat: That seems pretty good as far as spending SFA :)

I just wish I could ditch the mobile voice and sms service altogether and just use mobile broadband plans (which offer considerably better data rates than voice + sms + data plans).

Unfortunately it cannot be done with enough convenience in my case unless there's a solution to providing "proper SMS" send and recieve capability over a data service (by this I mean tied to a permanent number just like conventional sms). I didn't think this would be a consideration but in practice sms is often tied to authentication of services I use and it won't work without this.

        • @Diji1: Yep … reliability is an issue sometimes (due to bad data connections). Would love 4G on my plan (so I will need to switch one day … ). But on the other side … do I really need it … no … so rather pay off the house :-).

        • @diji1: Dunno if this helps you but Yatango have ability to bill like that. My wife is trying them out, their packs seem quite flexible given you can either PAYG, or get slightly cheaper rates if you buy a pack.

Sure there are negatives, I think they might charge per mb instead of kb but you can just have a recurring data pack and PAYG for calls/texts if you use them, or buy a 100SMS pack & 500MB data pack each month but PAYG for calls, in any combination.

IMHO if you don't start with any recurring packs and don't use your phone or data for a month it can cost you $0 which is quite tempting, even just for a secondary-backup-number.

If this has helped and you want to help my wife out I think she has some kind of friend/referrer code that I could PM if interested but I don't know how it works or have it on me and I think I'm not allowed to post it anyway.

        • @fleetoiler: Yep … Yatango is the other option … no we need a provider which combines Yatango and Spintel … and we have the most competitive and customer friendly plan in Australia.

    • I was thinking of moving to Spintel. Can you time the actual number port? Or do they do it as part of the ordering process? I'd like to get the SIM and time the actual cutover myself if possible in order to maximise my current service

So it's $45 a month if you end up using 4GB of data (excess charged at 25c/mb over the provided 3GB).

Pretty good, for 4G, considering amaysim is the same price, but only with 1GB extra on 3G (total 5GB).

    • 25 cents per meg, isnt that more than 10 bucks for a gig?

    • +2

      1GB @ 25c/mb is $250

    • +2

Pretty good for who - the phone company?

  • +4

25 cents per MB when exceeding data limit? No thanks

    • Only matters if you go over, they cut you off at 100% anyway

I have only hit my limit once, they cut me off and called me to change plans (which i didnt do)

      • +2

point is though, many people do go over their limit and they don't want to cut off their data. 25c a MB is exorbitant. Most of the big players don't charge more than 2 cents a MB excess.

    • +3

Thats a dealbreaker for me … such a high risk of a bill shock …

  • International calls don't seem to be in included, I'm on a $28 plan with telechoice which is similar except data inclusions only 2GB. No reason for me to switch except I easily go over 2GB if I leave my data on.

Good deal for those who doesn't need international calls though .

  • But isn't this their everyday deal? You only save $10 on setup fee and that's all?

  • Damn it. Just signed up to this last week and paid the $20 setup fee! Do you think there would be any chance of getting it refunded?

  • Even with 3GB data, VF is cheaper for the normal $30 which can be had for $20 for six months.

  • -4

    NO DEAL!

You can actually Spend Less and Get More!

For only $33 you get everything Jeenee gives you plus more:

    • Unlimited Calls and Texts (instead of a 'cap' with inflated rates).
    • No setup fee at all as it's a prepaid service
    • The same Optus network including 4G coverage where available.

    https://www.betterlife.org.au/mobile-plans

Better yet, this mob are non-profit and were initially created solely for the purpose of helping low income families who couldn't go on a postpaid plan due to bad credit:
    https://www.betterlife.org.au/our-story

If you can settle for the Vodafone network and only 3G speeds, you can actually get an unlimited prepaid plan that is even cheaper than $33 a month.

Full review of your various options, as well as some recommendations if you are just a light mobile user, are available in this report.

    • Wow looks like we have a betterlife employee onboard…..

Jeenee are not for profit too that donate free services to disabled people, because this is close to me personally i would prefer to see my service also helping others directly

I think the neg is harsh as you should both be trying to help the same people, competition is healthy dont fight it

      Horses for courses i guess

      • -2

OP, I am far from being a BetterLife employee and have no association whatsoever with them, or any other mobile provider for that matter.

If you check my profile on OzBargain and my previous posts, you will be able to figure out quite easily who I am ;)

        Regarding the neg:

        • the reason I negged you was because I presented a deal with better inclusions yet for a lower price hence my mention of "Spend Less & Get More".

        • It is GREAT that Jeenee is another non-for-profit mobile provider and EVEN BETTER that they are supporting disabled people. Good on them! Yet, this does not change the fact that their offering is deficient compared to what I presented.

        • Competition is a GREAT thing and I'm the first person to support 'vigorous' competition between provider (and not just on price). Just read my post here. I actually prefer the term 'cut throat' to be honest and like to see companies 'spilling blood' over the privilege of securing my business. ;)

        • Horses for courses indeed. If someone prefers to go for your deal instead of what I presented then all power to them. I just want people to have complete information and make informed decisions.

        No hard feelings ey? :)

        • Everything you said is far enough

Though dont agree that this offer is deficient considering the wrapped up package. Though thats personal preference and depends on your motivation

          Cheers

          @ginmi
'I just want people to have complete information and make informed decisions'…

I've seen you in another mobile deal thread on Ozbargain. It appears that you don't read comments above you before you post.

Right up towards the top of this thread, someone states that the 'Betterlife' 3GB offer is $39 a month for people who don't have a Healthcare Card - something you don't mention in your vehemently stated crap about your 'complete information'.

I don't have a HC card. I haven't been on Ozbargain for long, but I'm just gonna guess that most Ozbargainers don't have one either. $4 less per month - for people who have a call pattern that falls under the $650 cap, the Jeenee deal is likely going to be a BETTER DEAL.

          @SchnishSchnack:

It appears that you don't read comments above you before you post.

My apologies. I usually do look at the comments to make sure the information I'm about to post hasn't been posted already. I didn't see tomrob95's comment and I apologise unreservedly.

Right up towards the top of this thread, someone states that the 'Betterlife' 3GB offer is $39 a month for people who don't have a Healthcare Card.

That information is outdated and no longer accurate. See my comment above.

Peace and love to you mate :)
