hmm. that almost is the price of an internal HDD

    • really? Internal WD 1TB ~$110 last time I checked…

      Still very good deal!

      • +1

well thats what i ment 110 and 127 are not that far apart

        • haha I swore I read "..almost half the price.."

  • Joondalup Officeworks has about 70 left.

Great price picked one up for myself.

  • This is USB right? IIRC. Not eSATA?

    • Yep, these are the shizz a'ight! IMHO the fact they power up and down as needed (fairly reliably) puts them light years ahead of the cheapo cases! ;)

  • Good price, although seems like an outgoing model. Still good deal.

  • Recently bought a LaCie 1TB for $149, because of it's look. Would get this model for that prices as well, nice price.

Tought one $98 for a 320GB WD for USB portability .. or this for an extra 680GB for $29 dollars .. but a power supply required.

  • This is a good price for a good drive! I'd kinda like a bargain on a "World Edition", but you can't have everything! ;)

We've got a computer fair on in Newy tomorrow, if I can't find something there with a "W" and a "D" on it for a super price to back up my consistently failing SeaCrate drives, I'll just wander on in to OW & snap up one of these bad boys! Cheers! :)

  • This is a good price and I also collected a Lacie 1TB Hard Drive recently from HT as well. My only sore point on both the Lacie and the WD is the Piano Black finish. It don't stay clean and shiny for too long.

  • I am guessing they'll be back to normal price tomorrow

    • Not to sure but the price was printed not hand written you'd think the sale price would be for at least a week?

      • +1

I only said this coz Officeworks matched the Harvey Norman one day sale price on these. HN had these for $128 yesterday

  • I would think all WD would get run out prices making way for new design, check wdc.com yourself

    • yeah the new model looks good. only one store has it for $199 for the moment (searched thru shopbot.com.au)

    • That would be the WDBAAF0010HBK then for $190+?
Yeah it looks nice,, slimmer, capacity gauge, extra s'ware et cetera.
But if you're after a good brand, basic USB2 ext' HDD, is it worth the wait and the $70 / 50%+ premium???
DSE still have the 1TB WD My Book Home Edition (USB/FireWire/eSATA) for $187 ATM, so for me it would be a toss up between this $127 deal for the Essential, or the extra $60 for the high-speed interfaces of the DSE Home edition.
      Edits:
      1) The DSE web site shows the Home edition as "Out of stock, due 13-Nov-2009, we will backorder for you and despatch asap", but the "Availability" tab shows it as in stock at a plethora of DSE stores around the country.

      2) OW have the 1TB Home edition back down to $187 again also.

High speed makes life a lot nicer, if you are working with large files on the drive (eg home movies) or do a lot of backups etc :)

        • Absolutely…
I've had one of these Essential drives for a while now, and it is a real pain moving or backing up large folders of videos (50GB+) to/from this USB drive and my file server / portable HDD / laptop!!!
Once again, you get what you're willing to pay for.

Mn…I don't know, for an eSATA External HDD, unless i know the external encloser from WD my book HOME edition is better than something like Coolermaster (Steel case), i would prefer to buy the 1TB bare HDD for $110 and the case for $64 and it adds up to $174 in total (Price is quoated from MSY). The price is similar, but i feel the Coolermaster case is just a tad better in quality (just my personal preference really). And i really don't need all those extra bell and whistle that come with the My Book Home edition package..

But speaking of that My book Essential edition, it's only litreally $17 more expensive than if you buy a bare HDD (again, quoated $110 from MSY, assuming the same HDD). So i think it's great value no matter what. So i just bought myself ANOTHER one today ha~ My first one was bought last year and it costed me $249. Gosh, give it another two year, 2TB will be worth less than 100 bucks….If i ever feel the USB 2.0 is slow, i can rip it apart and use my existing coolermaster external enclosure for eSATA transferring speed…ha

  • Arh! Should have wait. Bought $140 less than a month.

    • me too….just bought iomega 1tb for $142 3 weeks ago dang………

    • Me too

  • Bought one 1/2 an hour ago for $127 at Petersham OW. Plenty of stock lefted.

  • Argh! Bought a 320GB WD Passport on Friday for $99. Argh!

  • Did you guys use the software that came with the drive or did you delete it? I think it's some Google software and some backup software.

  • +2

Just got one from Officeworks (QV) they had heaps on display. Looks like a WD10EADS drive inside!
    Not too bad at all.

The software bundle doesn't look like much, some memeo backup 30 day trial….
I'd recommend Toucan (available here as a portable app http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/toucan)

They've also got the same one at Harvey Norman for $128, if you don't have an Officeworks.

    • +1

I think that price for HN is only for saturday as stated in the add.

  • Picked one up in Petersham Officeworks. Has about 12 on shelf this morning..

Price tag was printed.. may be new normal price..

  • +1

I thought the Harvey Norman one for $128 was the WD Elements. I belive this has a 8mg cache vs the 16mb cache. Officeworks is better and cheaper!

    • I was in Harvey Norman Indooroopilly-Brisbane yesterday, and the 1TB WD Elements had a special sticker on it for $137. Don't know about this $128. Also, they didn't have the 1tb WD Essentials for $128 either.

    • nah they definitely had the essentials for $128 for Sat only

      • HN Auburn had the Elements for $128 on their Saturday sale when I was there.

Price keeps coming down … it was last month JB Hifi selling it for $147 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/15491 … when it hits $99 … that's my cue to buy :)

I have a couple of these drives and they are very good. One thing i would recommend is to format them to NTFS so your not limited to 4GB file size. Not a lot of people would have files larger than 4GB but it's a pain if you need to format to NTFS after backing up a lot of files onto it!

  • scored a "repacked" one from OW Nth Syd for $120.. i think they have a couple left at this price, ask the sales dudes.

  • +1

Woah… I have one of these, which i got for 199 around 1 - 1.25 years ago. Its worked very well for me, with only a couple of negatives: The random access time is pretty slow (or low, not sure what terms used), as it takes windows explorer around 5 seconds to open it if you're accessing it after a long time.
Also, the write speeds are around 10mb/s, which is not particularly fast. Still, the read speeds, at 30mb/s, are as fast as most harddrives out there.

Anyway, regardless of aforementioned disadvantages, im definitely getting this at 127.. Its been a quiet and trusty harddrive :D

  • Looking good.
Inching ever closer to the $100 mark…

    How hot do these run?

I have a couple of Lacies with 500GB Seagates inside. They have been OK but they get darned hot to the touch…it's got to stress the electronics inside. They also don't spin down when idle.
Two points I'd like to correct with the next lot.
Still, at this price, as someone else pointed out, it's only a few dollars more for the enclosures over the price of the disks.

  • A couple of observations:
    1) …it takes windows explorer around 5 seconds to open it if you’re accessing it after a long time… & …spin down when idle…
The WD MyBook Essential DOES in fact spin down when idle (as earlier noted by StewBalls),, hence it has to spin up again when re-accessed, which is why it takes several seconds for Windows Explorer (or any app' trying to access the drive) to populate the directory tree display.
This spin-down feature helps with power dissipation / temperature.
    2) …Inching ever closer to the $100 mark…
    It'd be nice, but I 4 1 won't be holding my breath.
As some_one_some_where, Noslee & kodoq commented above, this is very likely a run-out of the "old" Essential model, with the "new" model about to hit Oz shelves at a significantly higher price.
I think this is a stand-out deal that may well represent a price low-point (for a well branded 1TB ext HDD; especially from a major national retailer) for some time to come - IMHO.
But I'd love to be proven wrong… ;)

Just picked one up from Harvey Norman for $126. Asked them if they could beat OW price. I tried to get lower, mentioning the fact that they have the "see the price lower after u buy it, and we'll refund u 110% of the difference", which equates to $5, seeing the sticker price had $179.95 on it. But they guy said that the OW website doesn't count as an advertised price, only catalogue. What a load of crap. Anyway, i'm not going to bother to buy it then try and return it in order to get $4 further off the already bargain price. Let's not be greedy (even if i'm not perticulary fond of HN in general).
