I've seen a 20% and even a 30% discount offer from Lonely Plant but this is the most I've seen yet!

I placed an order for the following:

Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Travel Guide valued at $39.95.
Southeast Asia on a Shoestring Travel Guide valued at $42.95.
Thailand Travel Guide valued at $47.95.

With my order the cheapest book was free so the total excluding delivery was $54.54 with the 40%
discount. Standard delivery charge was $6.90 for my order.

I've noticed that the total cost shown during checkout will be shown to be substantially less than
the actual cost but you will be charged the correct amount. I checked my credit card account right
after I placed the order and my card was charged $61.44, the correct amount.

UPDATE: Contacted Lonely Planet and they honoured the original amount of $45.46 incl delivery by
refunding $15.98.

  • I did the 30% discount one last week (damn them for bringing out 40%!!) and I was charged the higher total, not what the cart said, not the amount it says it's going to charge you the whole way through. I have sent an email but (surprise surprise) no response yet… I intend to call them this week because I personally think they should only be able to charge the amount I authorised them to.

    • You're right about how much they really charge you. I checked my credit card account and they have actually
charged me the correct amount of $61.44 incl std delievery. I guess their error? was too good to be true.
Let us know about your call, though..

      • Yeah I did a dummy purchase attempt and found out the calculation of Lonely Planet was incorrect. The three items I ordered was nearly $100, and the correct amount after the 40% off was $59. But the website told me it was $39. They did charge me $9.95 for delivery though.

I assume if I went through with the purchase, I would probably be charged with the correct amount of $59. But it is certainly interesting to see how the matter is resolved, where I only consented to pay the $39 it appears on the website.

      • Same thing here - credit card charged the correct amount.

The terms and conditions of the 3 for 2 offer do say "This offer may not be combined with other special offers or promotions including promotional discount codes."

But still, their system is making the error so who knows? Let us know the outcome!

        • This occurred with my order also, the amount debited to my credit card was different to the on-line order figure.

Just called lonely planet and they have agreed to honor the on-line amount and are going to process a refund for the difference.

I suggest others call them direct for any disputes 03 8379 8000.

  • Wow, this is great! :D You can get 3 books for about the price of one. Thanks!

  • nice work, I am going to grab a few.

  • Good saving but not many books that I after.

  • thanks for sharing the offer, i got myself 4 books so I can also get the free delivery..
shared with my colleague and he got 8!!!

  • How do you get the 3 for 2 deal as well as the 40% discount. This did not show up for me when i entered details in the check out. Just got the 3 for 2 deal.

    • Did you enter the promo code mate?

  • Just called them. You can NOT use the 40% discount code together with 3 for 2 special. If you order 2 books, you will get 40% off but if you order 3 books you will pay for 2 with no additional discount. 40% off and another 20% of the after discounted amount is still a great bargain.

    • Maybe that's the case but I still got 40% off on top of the 3 for 2 deal. That's why I only paid $54.54
excl delivery for the 3 books I ordered. So it does work.

  • Good find wcm8382 …. 40% is anyday better than the 30% i posted … cheerio

  • Did this last night. The system even messed up and i ended up paying no postage. 2 $19 books and a $40 one for $23!!!!
    Good work

  • Hi guys,

Apparnetly there is a bug in their system and they don't meant to combine 3 for 2 offer with the 40% off.
Hence you were charged a higher amount than what it appears on the web invoice.
I checked my credit card and I was charged $16 dollars extra than the email invoice I received.
Better double check your CC statement just to make sure.

    Shan

    • You can combine 3 for 2 offer with 40% off. That is reflected on the actual cost they charge your credit card.

    • Hey Shan,

This issue has been picked up by a few people. It has been mentioned that if you contact Lonely Planet, they would honour the web invoice, and would refund you the price discrepancy.

      • I contacted them and they refunded the difference. Just need to get the word out to others now.

  • Thanks Cacbm,

Yes i already contacted them. Just thought I posted here so other ppl can check

  • Hi

I made a purchase and they indeed charged me more than they agreed to. I tried to call them but it was after 5pm, so I emailed them.

    This is their reply:

"What promotional code did you use for this order ?
Please provide your Haystack booking number for confirmation for use of this code. "

Did anyone have to provide such detail? I understand there maybe conditions in which to use the promotional code, but still, they charge me more than what they agreed to. I haven't replied or called back yet because I don't have a "Haystack booking number".

What does everyone recommend I do?

    Thanks,
    Alan

    • What did you tell them? I just told them that I was charged more than what I was quoted and I got a refund.
I did not provide any other detail/s apart from my order number.

      • It's a copy of the email I sent below

        Hi,

I purchased three books from the Lonely Planet website a few days ago and I've just received the books today. However, I discovered that the invoice that came with the books says it's $67.44, which is different to the $49.06 that I thought I would be paying when I purchased online. The online invoice also states that amount is $49.06.

I've called customer service but I did so just after 5pm, therefore there was no one there.

Can you advise me as to why this happened?

        My order number is 66993.

        Regards,

        Alan Yang

        • Yeah I think the problem with this email is that you asked them a question. You have to be firm I guess and demand a refund. That's what I did and I got a refund the next day. Good luck!

          • @wcm8382: Just spoke with someone at Lonely Planet, and they admitted that there's an error on the system and pointed out that the price I paid was actually the correct amount. However, he was happy to refund me the difference. Nicely done!

  • This deal is ok but the price savings arent as big as they advertise. For example, I bought three books. The reccomended retail price shown on the actual books is much lower than the prices they were selling for on lonely planet E.G guide to Scandinavia sells for $45 on lonely planet wheras the book shows an RRP of $US 25 which is about $28 Australian. So its like they are having a percentage off sale but they have jacked up their prices to make the percentage saving look far bigger.

    • Good pick there acersaurus,

I didn't know the US price is so much cheaper than the Aussie price. But 40% off + buy two get one free IS the best an Aussie can do though. Whether it's buying in the bookshops or Lonely Planet online without discount.
