I've often been asked, "Should I buy a new PC?"

Well, if you really need the latest'n'greatest vToday.1 graphics card and the absolute-fastest Quad-guts processor with an Umpty-nine terababble drive - AND you want to pay for it - then go right ahead! You have my blessing; RUN, quick like a bunny, to the nearest shiny-computer store and plunk down your $two grand… they'll be your best friends!

But if you just need to do some websurfing/Emails, a bit of after-hours document work, or watch an occasional movie, then anything you'd get off the shelf over the past couple of years is simply overkill.

It's the dirty little secret of the whole industry. Even when it comes to games, the high-end ones which demand all sorts of grunt mostly just use it to display extra-realistic blood spatters… who needs that?

So the smarter option is to get a refurbished PC from Zazz. Today we have some shiny Acer Veriton 5800 systems, complete with 1GB of RAM, DVD burner, 80gigs of HD space and a 2.8Ghz Celeron D processor (hey, that's better than what I'M using!), tested and installed with your choice of Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux. Plus you can add a keyboard, mouse and another gig of RAM (total of 2GB) for just $39.95 extra!

Some may have a minor scratch or dent on the outside, but the innards will last for years to come. They make a great PC for the kids, the guest room, or just to have around in case something goes "poof" in your main system…

I've also been asked, "why can't I go swimming within half an hour after I eat lunch?" - but for that answer, we'll have to wait until next time…

Better grab yours now, they won't be here tomorrow!

Avoid Acer, awful quality case, it was painful to remove/put back the cover, the DVD drives would often fail, these systems are noisy and so forth..

  • Hi Parta,

I can confirm the case is a really hard to get off!! But in saying that it is also a high quality chassis one you don't really get these days with most PC's. The DVD drives have all been replaced with brand new units so failure of these wont be an issue. Cant say the systems are noisier than any other we have in the office, in fact I would probably say its quieter than the generic case sitting at my desk.

Any further questions please don't hesitate to ask! = )

  • I'll give it a +1 because of the low price however…

Is it just me or does this case look like something out of 1982? Man that thing looks hideous! It should come with a 5 1/4" floppy drive and it'd be complete! :)

  • I tend to agree, not the prettiest case around by any stretch of the imagination. But just hide it underneath your desk and you would never know the hideous truth that lies beneath! It certainly runs better than it looks. : P

    • Oh yeah don't get me wrong, aesthetics would not prevent me buying a computer its just the first thought I had. For the price it looks very good to me, I don't personally need one but my flatmate MIGHT, I'll tell her about it when she gets home.

Hmmm… tempting! But I'm not a fan of the Celeron-D's. HOWEVER, the fact that these machines use DDR2 is a huge plus (cheap RAM upgrades), and it seems to have a proper PCI-Express 16x slot, which supports a full height card! (ie. easy and cheap to add more powerful graphics, within the limits of the power supply anyway!).

Most of the budget boxes on Ebay are slimline units, which don't take the full-height graphics cards… so this machine actually looks like a pretty good buy (well apart from the Celeron CPU anyway!).

  • I've had problems with the power button and the dvd drives in these exact models. Seems to be quite common.

  • Hmmm, one of these + the $30 Pinnacle PCTV card from here:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/16508
    …I smell cheap HTPC! ;)

    • or a cheap 8400gs pci-e card to get 1080p hardware decoding :D Too bad you can't have both ;)
