Lazer Genesis Road Helmet Blue/White 2013 Size L $80 (RRP $240) + $12 Postage @ Pushys

50

I bought one of these with a gift voucher last xmas and thought I had a bargain at $150. Obviously this is now an old model but frankly, I'm not sure how you tell with a cycling helmet. For all those aspiring roadies out there assembling kit I reckon this is a good deal.

Be wary when buying helmets from overseas websites like chainreaction, wiggle etc. Not all of the helmets sold from overseas meet Australian standards and for anybody that aspires to race I believe that not having the AU/NZ standard sticker inside your helmet is enough to get you disqualified. For the rest of us I assume there must be some extra safety feature built in to get the certification that hopefully will help keep me safe.

    Only $5 here for Ozbargainers…

you can't spend $1,000+ on a bike, only to get a $5 helmet. That would be crazy. surely?

      • +1

        Why is it crazy?

Firstly, the $5 helmets are subsidised by the government, so they're not really only worth $5.

Secondly, the main differences between a cheap and expensive helmet are weight and aerodynamics. And even then, the differences are minute in comparison to everything else, and would only make a significant difference to a hardcore cyclist, to whom every gram is important (and who has already spent the money making sure all their other gear is as light and aerodynamic as possible)…for everyone else, it makes little to no difference. (in fact, I would suggest the biggest difference is in the placebo effect of feeling you have a proper racing helmet…)

This helmet is unlikely to provide significantly more protection than a $5 helmet. And that money you saved could be spent on buying a better bike, or better components or accessories, which will make MORE of a difference than the helmet.

So no, it's not crazy to buy an expensive bike and cheap helmet: not at all. If squeezing every last bit of performance out of your gear is important, then yeah, definitely…but personally i'd rather put that money towards something that will make a bigger difference for me.

        • But it turns out that a better helmet can be very good value for increasing performance.

          http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/article/how-aero-is-aero-…

The aerodynamic Kabuto helmet mentioned here:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/162257
is only an extra $28 delivered.

        • @octagonalman:

But it turns out that a better helmet can be very good value for increasing performance.

No it doesn't. Look at the tests… Different bike setup, different riding position…

          @octagonalman:

umm, i think if you're going to be bothered reading that, then you fall into the "hardcore cyclist" category. (if you wear lycra, you are probably in the "hardcore cyclist" category.)

enjoy your extra 8.6W or 9.4W (depending on the protocol you use)…

to clarify: i never said an aerodynamic helmet can't improve your performance (or provide good value)…i am simply stating that the performance gains are not NECESSARILY noticeable or significant to all people. i am simply arguing against the initial comment that buying a $5 helmet is crazy. if you care about maximising speed/performance, sure…but not to everyone.

        • +1

Aside from aerodynamics and weight, the other key difference with higher grade helmets is often comfort. Most of the higher end helmets have the ability to adjust the fit to suit different head shapes, to allow airflow for ventilation or to adjust internal fittings to avoid rubbing/pressure. Fit might not be a major problem for a 5 min trip to the shops but it is certainly an issue for people that spend hours in the saddle in all weather types.

        • @2ndeffort:

firstly, the $5 helmets DO have fit adjustments.

secondly, you are completely missing the point…

i AGREE that helmets make a substantial difference to many people. totally they do. i never said they didn't. i'm not arguing that this helmet ISN'T better than the $5 helmet, nor am i arguing that this helmet isn't worth spending the extra money on (for some people)!

but i DO NOT AGREE that buying a $5 helmet is crazy (FOR ALL PEOPLE). i am simply arguing why someone MIGHT spend $5 on a helmet, having spent $1000+ on a bike…because to them, the performance gains from the helmet might not be important.

please read comments in context before responding. (you'll probably notice that we agree entirely…)

          thanks.

        • @2ndeffort:
If you are getting pressure points from helmet, use the back of a spoon to press in the polystyrene slightly.

@caprimulgus:I get it, I have a $4 light on my $4K road bike. I understand that it is OK to buy a bargain regardless of what you've paid for your bike.

        • @jv:

But if you read the first column of those tables you'll find that data rows 2,3 and 4,5 are paired to only have the helmet change in both tests.

        • @octagonalman: That article explains how an expensive road helmet is slower than an aero helmet in a time trial, so you defeat your own point there. But road helmets don't need to be as aero, as you are often in peletons and/or climbing hills, where aero is unimportant. So they focus on light weight and keeping you cooler, which will help you quite a lot if you are doing a lot of climbing.

          @sb944:

guys, at the end of the day, i think the point is there are various types of helmets with various benefits for various types of cycling! so choose the helmet that suits you best! :)

        Melbourne City Council definitely did…

Looks like the Aldi one would be pretty much the same in terms of design specs and conformance to AUS standards.

    • The $5 helmets definitely conform to Australian Standards…

  • Stackhat FTW

  • Guys, if you are after a generic, cheapest you can get bike helmet that meets the standards there are loads of cheaper helmets around. This is an enthusiast level road bike helmet designed for folks that like to ride their road bikes for long distances. If you have a wardrobe full of lycra and you know who Alberto Contador and Bradley Wiggins are, this is the type of helmet for you. If you did Amy's Gran Fondo and you've signed up for 'Around the Bay In a Day' this is the helmet for you. If you see bikes as a cheap generic form of transport that enable you to avoid buying petrol, move on this isn't for you. If you see bikes as a low cost fun thing you can do with your toddler children on a bike path somewhere this possibly isn't the lowest cost option for you.

I have one of these bought from an entirely different shop for almost double this price (mine is red!). It has an adjustable dial on the rear that allows you to dial in a custom fit and adjustable chin straps to keep it secure on your head. I have ridden several thousand Kms in mine including all weather types with a liner or a cycling cap underneath on occasions. I reckon at around 1.5 hrs into a ride, clipping along at 40Km/hr trying to dodge cars, dogs, pedestrians and slower cyclists a stuffy, bad fitting helmet would become a real PITA! If I needed a cheap helmet to use with the hire bike to slowly ride along some bike paths from Docklands to the Shrine of remembrance in Melbourne, different story!

I am pretty sure this is more comfortable than the $5 helmets but I could be wrong. It has loads of air vents designed to channel air through and keep you from sweating up a storm. The type of person that should be interested in this has road cycling shoes, clip-in pedals and wears bib shorts.

The Aldi helmet has a visor so it is probably either a Mountain Bike helmet or a generic 'ride along the bike path with my kids' type helmet. Before you ask me what's the difference, try flying down a hill at 70-Km/Hr on a road bike and tell me how the visor works for you!

    • ^ which is exactly what i was saying…

i was simply responding to the comment that buying a $5 helmet is crazy (it isn't). i never said buying this helmet is crazy (it isn't).

      whatever floats your spokes.

    • If you have a wardrobe full of lycra

I do and I find the $5 helmets excellent for long rides.

      • +1

Yeah, but he meant **lycra88 for cycling….

  • Obviously this is now an old model but frankly, I'm not sure how you tell with a cycling helmet.

The sort of people who spend $200 on a bike helmet will know. Don't they change the front grille every year?

I'd like to see a citation on anyone ever disqualified or excluded from a race for using an imported helmet. (professional level??)
Saying "I believe" can just be spreading FUD and urban legends.

BTW, the$5-10 helmets in Target etc lack a proper harness to hold it in place.

Anaconda is good - during their frequent sales of course.

    • I'm wishing I had never posted this deal.

Here are some details about the certification and legality of overseas sourced helmets http://cyclingtips.com.au/2013/04/australian-helmet-standard… essentially it is illegal to ride on the roads with a non-certified helmet but practically when was the last time the police were stopping people to do helmet checks.

Problem might arise if you are involved in an accident and legal proceedings result. If you want to race with an overseas helmet you can apply for a permit from the police. I have seen race entry conditions where they specify helmet standards.

Looking forward to 'around the bay' and an enormous peloton of blue $5 helmets winding their way down Beach Rd to Sorrento!

      • The more information you provide the greater the surface area of attack.

  • Thanks OP, I just purchased. I would not have found the deal without your post!

I was easy to find a few extra items to reach $100+ for free shipping. You can also use code 'push234' for $10 off.

A good comfortable helmet is worth the money.

  • OP does anyone have idea about the sizing? How big is a LARGE?
I'm interested but theres no mention of sizing - either that or i'm blind as a bat
