Warning.. Wd portable drives drive the usb soldered on the PCB..(cost saving and space saving measure) if anything happens to the USB interface.. its very very difficult to retrieve the data..

Seagate portable drives on the other hand, have a separate interface that can be detached from the drive..anything happens to the drive and you can mount it internally into a computer. You can even "shuck" seagate drives from their external casing and use them in laptops and game consoles.. unlike the WD equivalents.

A lot of people have been burnt by this issue.. hence.. I have refused to by WD portable drives for many years now..

It sucks when they do that but it's also why backups should exist. Also that is a damn good price for a 2TB external. We saw 1TB "bargains" at 75$ less than 6 weeks ago.

    • LOL I was purchasing a WD My passport 2Tb for $ 112 from Centrecom when I saw your post. I'm just going to use this HDD to play MKV movies on my WDTV player. I just hope this thing will last for many year to come :(

I learnt my lesson the hard way. The HDD was corrupted 2 months into using it and destroyed all my photos and work files. Had to then pay $400 for data recovery which took 3 weeks to a month because it was a lot harder to recover data from a drive that's soldered to the case. Never again with WD.

Well you could just get the Seagate for $108.20 delivered here, instead of the WD for $102.20

I think the piece of mind plus the ability to use it in a another device, plus the Seagate drive is extremely fast is worth the extra $6..

    • yeah but seagate have highest actual hard drive failure rate.
