Oh my… How can this drive be so cheap? I purchased this USB stick about half a year ago for $80. It is a steal at this price for the performance it offered.

    • +3

actually its a revised version of the one you (possibly) have - as the previous version had a read speed of 190mb/s - this one is 245mb/s!! this one was released in july this year, an even better deal then!!

    • +5

bcause 250GB SSDs are almost hitting $100.

      • "How can this drive be so cheap?"

OZB axiom: "Buy now, ask questions later".

  • +2

    These things are really fast!

    • I'll second that. I have a few of the 16GB versions and they are head and shoulders above the other USB 3 drives I have. Perfect for taking a few movies to a friends or transfering between PC's and NAS's, etc.

  • +1

    nice! just bought one

So I presume that this is an SSD type USB 3 thumb drive,

Is the performance really noticeable? I always thought the bottleneck to be the USB 3 interface rather than the actual hard drive

    • +2

USB3.0 is 5Gbps. SATAII is 6Gbps. So no not really.

Fast flash drives will do about 2-3Gbps.

USB drives are slightly different to SSDs though.

      • Ok, so the bottleneck is really still with the drive itself.

Any idea how feasible it would be to run a virtual machine directly from a USB 3 SSD?

I'm thinking of buying the patriot 128gb USB 3 SSD thumb drive, but I've always been weary about running off a USB as i've found it quite slow

        • +2

On flash drives yes the drive is the slower part. I don't think there are regular flash drives (i.e. not stupidly expensive) that would max out USB3.0 (yet)

SSDs are however pretty much hitting the 6Gbps limit (550MB/s is not rare). They probably wouldn't go much faster though since there's little point making the drive faster than the interface.

        • @Shonky:

USB is horribly inefficient. There is a lot of protocol overhead.

Case in point: USB 2,0 claims 480Mbps, in real life the limit is 30MBps (240Mbps).

IMHO this Sandisk is pretty close to the bottleneck of the bus.

        Correction…
        SATA II = 3Gbps
        SATA III = 6Gbps

        • Correct - typo - not enough "I"s

        • Correction, I knew your father.

    • I had one of these and upgraded to the extreme pro. I have to say the speed copying the old file across was very noticeable.

    • So I presume that this is an SSD type USB 3 thumb drive,

Correct. This is literally an SSD in a stick. They have the same controller as SanDisk's ReadyCache SSD and the reported name, if you look at the device with a S.M.A.R.T tool like Crystal Disk Info, will show up as SanDisk SSD U100, which SanDisk also sells in the SATA and mSATA form factors.

These are, for all intents and purposes, the fastest USB flash drives available.

  • USB 3.0 Flash Drive is really fast.

    • +3

Not always. There are slow drives out there that have USB3.0 interfaces. Sometimes with terrible write speeds of 10MByte/sec or less. Read is often a bit better and faster than USB2.0 could do though.

      • +2

Agreed. I've seen some USB 3.0 drives slower than the good USB 2.0 drives. This Sandisk though is one of the fastest USB 3.0 flash drive out right now. I bought the 32GB version from MSY a few months back and highly recommend this one.

  • +2

i bought the 32gb a couple months back for $28. now it feels inadequate

    • +3

      You just passed "MARKETING 101"

  • +1

I bought a 16GB extreme for $17.50 last week… but i'm still happy with it

    items: AUD 40.97
    Shipping & handling: AUD 5.91

    Order total: AUD 46.88

In case anyone was wondering the Australian price with shipping :)

    • +1

Is that amazon price? You should get close to $45 with 28 deg or similar.

  • Just ordered one, thanks.

  • Just ordered mine :)!!!

  • +1

Damn I swear I paid MSY a coupla bucks more than this for a 32GB Extreme only about 2 or 3 months ago … not that I mind the rapid price drops of course! :D

  • Perfect for my NAS/HTPC, run the OS.
Every SATA I gain means 4tb more movies.

    w00t!

  • Postage is just 0.06USD extra for each additional stick, might be better to order at least two

edit: just tested the maximum order quantity allowed is 5

  • +1

i bought this one for around $49.99 from amazon couple months ago once i read on thewirecutter it was their recommended usb 3.0 drive. wow its so fast i didn't think it could be so fast. it blows away anything I've used. made me want the 128gb one made of better materials. but I'm getting another as the speed is jaw dropping when using a USB 3.0 computer wow. thx!

  • If the 32gb is anything to go by make note that these aren't classed as a removable device by windows and many USB utilities. This can make it tricky with certain software. But for the average use case they rock.

    • +1

By default, SanDisk Extremes will enable write-caching and the "Better performance" removal policy in the policies tab of the Device Properties window in Device Manager.

You can simply turn off write-caching and set the removal policy to "Quick Removal" so you won't see any ill effects pulling the drive in and out of PCs without Safely Removing them first, but turning those settings off does shave a lot of performance, which is the whole point of the SanDisk Extremes.

  • I tried to resist.. but failed….

    Just bought one :)

  • Cheers mate!
Bought this to accompany my PRORASO after-shave.

  • +1

I've had this, and currently have the 128GB version of it. Really really good flash drive, no regrets.

  • what timing, I just started looking for this exact drive then remembered seeing it here, but I only need 32 which is the same price as this 64 though… can I afford to wait for it to be shipped though :S

  • Now they are USD$44.36…

Mark this item in Camel^3 and wait for the alert - it will come soon enough.

      • Thanks, good idea…

  • Really nice drive, but the keychain attachment is a bit weak. Just replaced mine with an Integral one which is durable, tiny and fast.

  • +1

    Available @ 34.99 again!

  • Mine arrived, works well. Not sure what to do with it, but I have it.
