Okay no more excuses waiting for the right Dashcam to come around. Too many stories of motorists getting caught out on the road without evidence to back them up.

The technology is here, it is cheap, and the time has come to follow Russia's lead on this one. With this deal we will have OzBargainers across the country taking a constant stream of footage for our viewing pleasure and most importantly not getting screwed over by insurance.

According to Davo111 the G1WH (wide angle) & G1W-C (capacitor for high heat environments) are the best value Dashcams going around that are cheap but still quite good.

I managed to find it for $37.90 USD (Approx $42.79 AUD if your credit card gives you free currency conversion) or $43.91 AUD (if you want to be billed in AUD) from Banggood using a random coupon code I found by chance which is still working.

Coupon is B25627, which is good for 15% off.

Needs a genuine Kingston Class 10 MicroSD 16GB or 32GB (not 64GB) to work properly.

  • Stupid question, but why only Kingston?

    • I use a Sandisk class 4 32gb with mine, works fine.

    • +2

I saw some eBay listings and they all said Kingston is the only one they will guarantee will work, a few reviews I found online stating issues with non-genuine SD Cards causing problems. I can't think of any technical reason why a genuine Sandisk wouldn't work perfectly but they must have specified Kingston for a reason. I would strongly stick to the Class 10 advice.

    • Bought two of these few months ago. one works, and one keeps frozen at the start (hang on the screensaver of a red car. need to reset few times). changed to other class 10 from class 4 cards, it happens less frequently. now ordered two kingston class 10. will see how it goes.
updated: checked the one that is working. using Lexar class4 16G. No problem. looks like issue with the other camera.

      • +1

Mine has this problem, I spoke to banggood and got a refund eventually.

        Cards I tried:
        Samsung evo 64gb
        transcend 64 and 32gb
        Lexar 600x 64gb

I tried flashing it with the DOD firmware, the only difference is the on/off button is easier to reset the unit where the original firmware requires an unplug, hold the button and even then it only sometimes works.

I bought something else for the mrs and its working well. Waiting for the Mobius to go on sale but it seems like it wont.

No, this is NOT the dashcam to start a revolution unfortunately. At its "1080p" settings licence plates are illegible, making them useless for the very function they are supposed to fill. At the minimum you need something like the SJ1000 or the Moebius which are both under $100 to do the job. If it can't read licence plates clearly, its pretty useless as a dashcam.

I agree with you that its time everyone got themselves one, but just not this model.

    • +2

I saw this video and it looks pretty clear to me. Are there any inexpensive Dashcam on the market that do more than 1080p?

Maybe if you find yourself in a situation, make sure you drive after the perp to ensure a clear shot of the numberplate?

I'll have a look at those model suggestions.

    • +8

It's not totally useless without number plates.

It can be used by insurance to prove who was right and wrong. You don't need number plates for that. Just need to clearly see the car and what has happened.

If it's a hit and run then you may need licence plate, in that case just chase after them.

      • +7

If you think the licence plate might not be legible then read it out loud to yourself and that way you will have the audio of you saying it.

      • +5

I captured an accident in front of me, while I was listening to a song that sorta went with what happened. I uploaded it to youtube. The company behind failarmy contacted me and paid me US$100 for rights to the clip. Number plates were irrelevant.

So yes, it's definitely not totally useless without number plates. :)

lol what was this guy thinking!

        • @wholesaleturbos: Dunno haha. It was a young lady driving, with a guy in the passenger seat. I gave the footage to the 4WD driver who gave it to the police.

The amusing part is, a dashcam facebook group posted it on their page, and the owner of the small car saw it and posted a photo of the damaged car at home.

I'm waiting for my capacitor version that was on special for USD42. (Couldn't post - banned site)

Almost every forum says this is the best bang for buck. I did like the sounds of the B40/A118 @~$70.

Plates seem legible on Youtube videos, and even if not - for 40 bucks its going to cover most applications cost effectively for people who don't want to spend double or more.

I also plan to turn it into a rear cam if and when I upgrade.

    • +1

I don't know if you got a dodgy copy (or even have one at all) but I've got two of these and both are crystal clear.

I can pause the video at any point and number plates up to, say, four or five metres away are completely legible. Even plates at the far corners can be read easily.

There's a reason why this model is so widely acclaimed across the net, just google it and you'll see dozens of positive reviews. It's worth the full price of $60 that I paid.

    • +1

I agree, if you are going to do it, do it right, get the SJ1000

  • +1

Looks like this code can be used for more than one item too. I just added ten to my cart and it reduced the price to US$365.58 with the code applied. Not bad and I'm contemplating getting a heap of these to give as Christmas presents as none of my family has them in any of their cars. Hmmm, pull the pin or wait another couple of months… hmmm.

OP, any idea when the code expires?

    • No idea, but I could only use it in one transaction and then couldn't use it again (*under the same account, but still I am not one to skirt the rules)

    • If you want to order them from China for this Christmas I don't think you can afford to wait a couple of months

  • +4

Bought the same camera from these guys on 22-May-2014 (OZB deal), they said to wait… after waiting for months escalated to Paypal for resolution. As per these guys I was meant to wait and still waiting for the item to arrive!!! - Order #2164750

    • +3

Max I wait for items from China is 1 month. Then I open a paypal case.

  • I know that this camera is good for front-view, but I'd want a camera facing rearwards, too. Any suggestions for that? I imagine cords running all over the place…

    • +1

Just get a 2nd one of these for the rear view?!

I don't know as I don't yet have one even for the dashboard but I'm pretty close to it. I was thinking the same but thought it wouldn't be too difficult to use another one of these to record the rear view and simply take feed from the tail lights for power. The internal battery may get enough charge just to keep one of these going purely from the times the tail-lights are on when it gets dark enough but if not then just turn your tail-lights on even during the day. Alternatively it isn't very difficult or expensive to run a power feed to the back of the car yourself.

    • I bought two of these one for front and one for rear, looks pretty small and apparently has pretty good quality.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mobius-ActionCam-Full-HD-Sports-C…

    • Most cams stick out a lot and are really noticeable on the rear. They don't have the rear view mirror to blend in with.

The Mobius is very small, however there is no screen.

An alternative is a cam which allows a lens extension to be used so the unit can be say attached to your roof and only a small lens showing from the back window.

You hide the wires in your kick panels/roof lining as you do with the front. You can buy a 3.8m USB to mini USB from ebay for $4.50 each and use a 2 way USB adapter in your cigarette lighter socket. Run one up around your dash and behind the A pillar for the front and route the rear in a similar way.

Or you can but a multi socket lighter if you use GPS, phone charger etc as well. Mine was $14 from Jaycar and is 15A since I sometimes need to charge my laptop and run something else

Probably hard to find a 12v accessories power source in the back of a car, only 12V ignition and most likely you will be tapping into the fuel pump 12v

For those who want capacitor model - it's US$41.99 from gearbest.com with coupon code GBG1W

gearbest has problems with delivery reliability

    • Is this likely to be a fake or are GearBest usually reliable?

      • +2

Gearbest sells real G1W, according to dashcamtalk.com

    • is it worth getting the capacitor model?

edit: my previous question answered in the op!

      • you're welcome.

  • is there another one with "parking mode"?

    Good info here - https://dashcamtalk.com

  • Thank you very much, bought one, my first cam order after reading good reviews about this for a while

Maybe you could give the deal a plus to say thanks?

I bought one of these back when Gearbest had the special, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147889. Works pretty good for the price. I have put in a Class 10 Sandisk microSD which works perfectly fine.

If the picture is not clear, there is a guide on how to adjust the manual focus on the lens which may help. http://goo.gl/tyTmTd

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321112463346?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…
This one come with front and rear cameras which is why i buy this. The cable was long enough to fit my mazda cx5 and all cables were perfectly hidden. It is worth mentioning that the 3M mount looks much better than the normal suction cup.highly recommend this dash cam but maybe wait for another big ebay sunday.

  • had a $100+ cam and it virtually melted in summer last year, excuse to buy another.

    • I am also concerned about heat damage in summer. My car cannot be parked undercover and I only have sunshade windshield cover for protection.

      • I got one similar to this and my car sits in direct sunlight in 40c+ days on end and my dash has cracked but the camera still works everytime

says a lot about modern cars

This is probably fake - there is no mention of Novatek chip.

  • I hope this is not one of the fakes and it does indeed contain the Novotek chip in it, as the non Novotek models are slower and have a delay in between the individual split files that it makes

I bought mine from an ebay seller estore009 who is known to sell the correct ones

      ferntree gully road?

      • Awesome, you can read! :)

        • Lol I wasn't reading. The road looks familiar.

  • Agreed regarding the G1W-C (the capacitor version)
They only problem is that there are a lot of fakes out there. (even the legit ones have crappy manual and packaging)

I got mine from foxoffer and the video quality is amazing.

  • I ordered a new version called G1W-D from estore009 ten days ago, with ebay 15% discount.
Received it today. It's the same as G1W (same chip and optics), only smaller.
There is no information about this camera in the internet, so I took a bit of a risk.
Haven't tested it properly yet, but so far everything looks ok. Video quality is really good.

  • Anyone know where to pick one of these up that is safely genuine, and cheap?

  • 16gb card - that should be enough for simple traffic monitoring? (i.e. no scenic recording)

    • 16gb is about 2.5-3 hours of recording in 1080p
