note that whilst fasting can give more accurate results, if they're in the normal range from a random test without fasting, then it's unlikely that one truly has high blood glucose or cholesterol levels :)

Hate to think how a large percentage of users here would go, judging by the frequent amount of fast food deals that get up voted on here..

  • This is a real dilemma for me.
If this leads more people to be more proactive about their health… then I think something good come from it.
If this is a replacement for a good gp then have mercy on us all.

I hope these nurse practitioners also discuss bowel/breast/cervical/colon/skin/prostate (debatable) cancer screening with people.

    And review their psychological welbeing.
And follow up previous abnormal results.
And review immunisations (travel and routine).
    Etc etc etc

Or at least people dont perceive them to be a replacement for a gp.

Im not going to vote on this one as I have a personal interest here.
Suffice to say this scares me. (And all things being equal I am probably against it and think a good gp is an important part of everyone's life)

    sigh

    • I'm not with Priceline so I can't be sure, but as a pharmacist, this would probably in line with other pharmacy initiatives like 'Know Your Numbers' run through the Australian Heart Foundation, where the program is specifically set up purely as a health promotion and screening tool (as pharmacies are a good fit). The aim is to calculate AUSDRisk scores, pick up people with high cardiovascular risk, educate people about what their numbers actually mean and refer them onto their GPs. There are set guidelines and protocols depending on the results, about what recommendations we're supposed to make, giving people a starting off point to manage their health risks e.g. referral to doctor, counselling on lifestyle, smoking cessation etc. So yeah, doctors aren't being replaced any time soon, hopefully.

  • What do they use to check these things?

Blood pressure check - that pump thing
    Blood glucose levels - ????
    Cholesterol levels - needles?
    BMI check - scale?
Lifestyle check - ask you questions?
