  • I wonder if those additives/flushes are any good? I want to try if so.

    • All a bit of a wank really…

    • Yes, depending on what your trying to achieve. I use the injector cleaner every time I service my wife's car, runs better (over proven this by going out to to a computer and checking for ruining being pulled) and improves had mileage. You know sometimes when you take your car for a service to the dealership and they try and charge you $150 to "clean your injectors"… They just shove this $15 bottle in and charge you 1000% markup :-)

Damn, doesn't look like Start You Bastard is included :-/

    These things are snake oils

    • No, I mean it. For those have used Sea Foam they would know the difference. Try it first

      • I use a USA car forums for one of my cars (there is no aussie equivalent) to learn all kinds of "how to's" about the car… Anyway "Sea Foam" comes up a lot in discussion. Dunno if you can even get the stuff out here but they sure speak highly of it in USA.

        • I managed to get few cans into Australia. It is very different to all products I've tried.

Really? it did work well for me when I did my oil purge, everything was purge smoothly and really dark + also some deposits came out

    • Engine oil flushes are okay on newer cars, I'd never use them on anything with over 100,000km or >10yr old unless that car has been using them from the start. Some sludge deposits get into nooks and crannys and is a good thing (can keep a car from leaking!). One of our cars is a 1993 model, has never leaked on drop of oil, I reckon there'd be problems if I used an aggressive flush on it though. It's been well looked after but is old now (200,000km).

Newer cars, why not. But it gets costly doing it everytime. I had a new car which I would flush about every 3-4 changes. I think of it like cleaning hands, a quick scrub of hand wash is good, doing it for 10 minutes = problems :)

What I do on my cars (including the 1993) is dump the oil, half fill with some cheapo stuff (previous OzBargain deal), drive it for a few minutes - short drive won't do any harm, then dump that and put the good stuff in. The cheapo oil ends up being cheaper than the flush product and not so aggressive, unless you want aggressive (see above)

      Hope it helps.

(I'm no mechanic, the above works for me. take what I say with a grain of sand)

Well well, I think I am going to follow your advice.
The car I have is a subaru from 97 with 280,000km on the clock :> drives perfectly, but the mechanic who did the pink slip told me I have a really tiny dropping/leaking a bit of oil but nothing major.
Might be because of this oil flush then.
        Thanks for advice !

        • Yeah my money would be on the flush causing it. If it's only minor, some new sludge will probably find its way in there over time. The whole thing sounds weird I know :)

I'm currently using Gulf Western 20W50 oil which I got for I think $6/each at SuperCheapAuto (bought about 6, have 3 left) but any cheapy will do the job. If you haven't already, grab yourself a $10 credit at SuperCheapAuto and put that towards it.

Oh if you're changing the oil filter, I change mine AFTER the cheapo stuff has been drained. It probably doesn't matter but given filters hold 300-500ml of oil, that's potentially holding a bit of foreign blend in there waiting to mix up with your good stuff.

          Glad I could help :)

PS: If it makes you feel any better, I just discovered I'd been running the wrong gearbox oil in my manual for the last 6000-7000KM. Heavy thick 80W oil when I was supposed to be using thin ATF Fluid! I swapped it out on the weekend but only time will tell if I did any lasting damage to the transmission. This was on a mechanics advise too :(

  • These are not snake oil, some are great products. As a car guy who runs a highly modified turbo car I use the injector cleaner stuff every 7,000kms. If I don't I do notice more pinging when I hook my car up to the computer.

I also use it on my wife's car, keeps the fuel mileage good and as a preventative measure.

Also the"power boost" stuff is like just an octane treatment, gives you a tiny boost on the drag strip, or helps if you get a bad batch of fuel.

  • Signed up for SCA Club again. Applied the $10 credit which bring it down to $8.96

    Thanks OP.
