It's still the best e-reader on the market in my opinion., however there's rumours that the Kindle PW3 will be released within the next month or two so I'd wait for either the new model, or the price drop that comes along with it. It should be noted though that though that we usually don't get them until long after they're released in the US and they're way overpriced.

Edit: Unless you're talking about DWI, in that case I'm clueless.

Re DWI: recently bought a phone from them. Delivery was pretty prompt (4-5 days), packaging was a bit crushed but that could easily have happened in transit. Manufacturer seal was broken, and the box had been re-sealed using a generic tape-like seal.
The phone seemed to be fine: it had the manufacturer screen protector on it (though it might have been removed and re-applied). Not an AU charger (no shock there), but came with an international power plug adapter.

In short: pretty much what I'd expect for the price, although broken seals are always a bit dubious.

      • could that have been customs?

I've got no idea why the store would open the box

        • Perhaps, but I thought that if customs opened something then there was a specific label or something they used to indicate that it was customs. (Also, I believe the shipping was all within Australia - although it could have been cut when DWI brought it in perhaps?)

Despite the seal being cut, the contents were absolutely fine with no indications of having been used at all (e.g. screen protector still on, battery at about 45%). I say that broken seals are dubious, but I was happy with the price paid, the product received, and the delivery time. I would certainly use DWI again.

        • Customs will usually insert literature and re-tape packages to make it pretty clear they've been inspected.

    • The paperwhite is brilliant. Buy one.

DWI is fine. I've bought tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff from them, never had an issue. Also never had to make a return, though, so ymmv on that one.

These have nothing on the Kobo Aura HD.

As someone who requires an Ebooks 'features' to read (large font, front light, about 3" from face), Ive tried them all long term.

Kobo GLO is carried with me, Kobo AuraHD lives on the bedside table.

Kindle just cant seem to get the backlighting perfectly uniform, also the font range is more designer than functional (to me), and no open source.

Each to their own, but at that price, I just like to let people know there are other options, from someone who has extensively tried them both.

    • Kobo Aura HD seems to be another 50% more than this Kindle

    • I also settled on the Kobo Glo after testing quite a number of options. I returned the PaperWhite over 5 times to Amazon (each time getting a brand new item with the same multi coloured uneven lighting) before I got off that merry-go-round. Their CS is great (no problems retuning) but the product was abysmal.

    • Aura HD is 50g heavier

    • Kindle fonts are gorgeous, and the frontlight is perfectly flat so dunno what you are talking about there.

And here is a list of people who care about their ereader being open source:

    • Nice this is definitely the next e-reader I will be getting.

My Sony is nice but it lacks any side/back lighting and have a separate battery for the light is annoying.

Edit: Kobo are about to release the Aura HD (H2O)! Its has a few improvements over the Aura HD, but its waterproof to 1m.

Nice, I just bought one. Cheap price for a simple ebook reader - not sure what major advancements they could bring to this for next gen

    • FYI - Received my Kindle yesterday - so one week shipping

meh I bought one, its good for ma eyes!

  • I got the 2014 edition from the ebay sunday deals, even though i do not believe there is any difference between 2013 & 2014 models.

I'm still trying to find a good case for it. I did a bit of research & the Omoton case seems to be one of the best available after which the Amazon leather case, but the price is around $15 compared to $40 of the Amazon case. But ive had no luck finding the Omoton case that can get it delivered here

The only difference is the more recent model has double the storage, which would be irrelevant for most users considering the size of most e-books.

  • Can I get peoples opinions on reading PDFs on these vs android and apple tablets are they really easier on the eyes?

    • For PDF's I'd stick with the tablet. The Kindle is definitely easier on the eyes, but the tablets are much more convenient with PDF's, particularly if they're in colour.

    • It's the screen technology that makes the difference - e-Ink based readers as so much easier on the eyes because they're not shining light directly out at you. Even the models with light are only angled from the side.

I only have a Kindle keyboard, might get a paperwhite. But I'd never want to read a book on an LCD screen :/

Comics however.. are awesome on tablets :)
