or use Google Maps for free !!!

Nearmap is a different class of product, with much higher resolution (though low accuracy), timelapse, and oblique views allowing them to generate elevation models. It is a good product for professionals, but seriously useless for the domestic market. Also, 50MB quota, seriously? I think this is seriously overpriced for what it is.
Nearmap has missed the boat trying to come up with a suitable business model. They couldn't decide how to charge, and when they did they asked for so much that no organisation could afford it. Real shame.

Nearmap is a different class of product

I know, it used to be free.

Now I just use Google Maps and don't miss Nearmap…

It is a good product for professionals

This licence is not allowed for commercial use, so Google maps is much better value…

Let's be honest… Google Maps is great for it's price, otherwise it's near on useless at times!
We're about to put in a pool and need a better resolution and more current picture than what Google provides!
Almost tempted to pay the $99 to save a lot of stuffing about and guesswork. I did say ALMOST!

Saying Google Maps is free is almost like saying that it's free to walk!

          @Snoop:
Yeah, it makes you wonder how people ever installed swimming pools without high detail overhead imagery.

        • @rodericb:
People and/or landscapers measured it up and mapped it out by hand.
I just figure it saves a few hours of work @ about $50-$100 an hour!

      • "Your data allowance is unlimited for the first 30 days after your initial account creation."

If 50MB doesn't suit you, you have 30 days to download as much as you can =)

Download how? What are you going to do, take screen dumps and stitch them all back together? :0

      • Jv hangs around smokers to pick up old butts with another puff coz it's free. What pay for a full cig when u can pick up old butts ey jv? Classy man.

        • +1

I don't smoke, but I'm guessing from your user name that you do ???

        • that you do

          Clearly evident!

    • Or you can just contact Snowden, I'm sure he can 'leak' out some gigapixel shots of your neighbourhood for free :)

While I agree that for personal use $99 is still expensive.
Comparing Google with Nearmap is not really a good comparison, as Nearmap is done using planes and the detail is much higher than 3+ year old Satellite images. Pity that Nearmap stopped the private access, as it was fun to see how things in the area changed over the months.

    • Nearmap updates up to 7 times a year, around once bi-monthly. Compared to years for google map.

      • It is very good and I loved the way you could use the timeline to see previous maps to see how things change over time .

What 50MB usage per month, are you kidding me?

They must have been taken over by Bigpond recently…

I used nearmap to monitor the build of my new home, from above. The maps changed weekly, sometimes daily. I missed it terribly when they pulled the pin and didn't offer residential access any more. But I don't think it is worth $99 per year (at least for non-commercial, which this is).

  • For many applications all you need is a few days access just to download the areas you need, including the historic pictures.

I really doubt at these prices that many end users would take up the offer. I suppose if I was about to buy or build a house it might be worth it.

Still not what I would call a bargain.

I suspect they are too worried about it being used for commercial purposes.
