Also the Windows 8 Pro is the same price, if you are upgrading from vista or xp http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Windows-…
Although ive heard you can start fresh with either of these, but im not sure on the specifics

    • Thanks! Added to OP.

Windows 8.1 full version is for Windows 7 users only.

I wonder how many people think it won't work unless they have windows 7.

    • ..or can't use it because they have XP.

  • +1

I think it works without the windows 7 or vista. Well at least that is how I installed mine on my new PC. Though, I'd just check with the store using live chat, just to make sure.

  • +4

Don't forget to check if your university faculty has free access to windows 8.1 licences via a dreamspark.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78164

    • I have access to Windows Server 2008 and 2012 / R2 licenses but not Windows 7 or 8. Weird.

      • Actually understandable. Windows Server version is basically free.

        • +1

No they aren't. The only free versions of Windows Server are 180 day trials and Hyper-V server. Other versions are in the $500-1500 price range.

My experience is Microsoft provide Server OSes (2008/2012), services (SQL server, exchange) and development apps (Visual Studio) via Dreamspark with keys that expire after a year or so and Windows 7/8/desktop OSes & apps (Access, Publisher, Visio etc) via MSDNAA with keys that don't expire.

      • I can get Server and Pro but not Enterprise…

    • THIS. Even if they don't have dreamspark… They usually will give you windows for free.

  • So can you buy 8.0 Pro then use the $25 to save money on 8.1 Pro? Or similar?

    • +2

Windows 8 and 8.1 are the same thing. The 0.1 is just a free a update.

      • Sure yes I know this, I was not clear.

I meant you can buy one version then get a discount on another version (or the same version) so the overall cost is below $69.99 a copy.

    • +1

No 8 to 8.1 is free, non-pro to pro is expensive

  • $25 towards these deals?!
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/161072

  • It says this version is for Win7 and the other for XP , Vista but surely you can just do a clean install on what ever you want using the various techniques available on the web.

    MS would not really care.

    • No workout techniques. This is a full version of Windows 8.1 Pro and the full version installs onto a clean hard drive first go every time no registry tweaking which it's designed to. That's the whole reason of a full version it's designed primarily for a completely blank hard drive but can also act as an upgrade.

  • So we have to forfeit our copy Windows 7 in the process?

    • +1

No, you don't have to forfeit windows 7 if you know the loop hole when installing windows 8. It's called a clean install, and basically the feature is there for times when windows crashes to the point where it needs to be reinstalled or other issues such as that.

      • The reg mod? Like I did with Windows 7 for a clean upgrade? So it thinks it has seen an older version? Thanks mate. :)))

        • Unless things have changed since launch, you only need a directory called c:/windows, that's it to make an upgrade copy work.

        • +1

When booting off the DVD (or whatever your copy of Windows is on) just choose "Custom" instead of upgrade as the type of install, from there you can either just select the hard drive you already have Windows on and hit install to have your entire user folder moved to C:\Windows.old (essentially backed up) or format/wipe your hard drive to do a completely clean install.

Source: I'm a computer technician, Windows upgrades/(re)installs are an everyday process.

    • "Forfiet your windows 7's, mwahaha" Forfiet-2014

  • Do I need my Windows XP product key to use this Windows 8.1 Upgrade? I lost my windows XP cd a long time ago so will this still work for me?

  • Windows 9 is apparently going to be free for Win 8 users and also a relatively cheap upgrade for XP or 7 users. Thats the rumour floating around anyways. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/08/windows-9-rumour-roundup-e…

I guess we will know in a bout 3 week time when Microsoft announces something on Sept 30.

    • I don't think there's much to that rumour. I can't see Microsoft giving their latest version of Windows away for free. They didn't even do that for Windows 7 users when it came to Windows 8 being released it wasn't completely free.

      • +3

It would be wise for MS to quickly sweep WIn 8 under the rug and replace it with 9. For several good reasons too.

Windows 8 is a commercial flop. At this rate, it is very likely that Windows 7 will become the next Windows XP. That's bad for Microsoft because they have to continue to provide support for an older OS and also keep selling the licenses to companies that have just moved from XP and would prefer to stick with Win 7 because of its reliability and compatibility with certain software or hardware. Their plan is to push people off Win 7 as soon as possible by introducing 9, the operating system that really should have been 8.1.

In the long run, win 7 isn't profitable for M$ because there are massive costs involved with having to keep an old OS updated with patches every week.

      • Just because they didn't do it in the past doesn't mean they won't in the future. Apple charged for Mountain Lion and then gave away Mavericks for free. It's a competitive market out there.

      • +3

I can't see Microsoft giving their latest version of Windows away for free.

Windows 8.1 "Bing Edition" pretty much crossed that threshold already.

What Scrimshaw said is spot-on. They are desperately trying to avoid another "unkillable" OS that haunts the market share for 13 years after it's release, like XP.

Their plan is to push people off Win 7 as soon as possible by introducing 9, the operating system that really should have been 8.1.

Well no, if Microsoft had their way, they would never scrap or otherwise scale back Metro or divert R&D away from the mobile computing market and back into desktop PCs as they really do consider desktop computing a bygone era; but what they do respect more than their own global domination is a bad quarterly report and currently Windows 8.1 is just not doing anything for the company.

Make no mistake, they're only doing this because they have to. Metro won't be completely gone, and little by little, they will find more avenues with which to shoehorn-in their aggressive Fisher Price OS/mobile computing uber alles worldview into future operating systems.

Consumers have only won the battle; the war is still heavily slanted in Microsoft's favour.

      • I actually think the chance of them giving it away is pretty high to be honest.
Think of it this way (which is also a recap of what others have said):

        1) They have legacy OS's floating around that you are trying to kill off like XP.
        2) They want to focus more on your current OS rather than having to keep support lines open for all the people that are refusing to upgrade.
        3) The actual revenue from the sales of the OS are minor in comparison to that which they make from Office and the business consumers
        4) They are trying to shake off the old image of Microsoft and implement a new one that keeps current to market trends.

If they offer the Win9 for free for the base versions then the majority of people will jump on it. Look at what happened when they were offering the cheap upgrades to Win8, lots of people went out and snapped up the upgrades even if they didn't stick with it.

People hate change and that is what killed Win8, too big a step at one time. I would also think that people are frugal at heart (well at least the ones reading this on Ozbargain) and don't want to outlay money for an operating system.

    • The thing is , Microsoft is predominately a software company, apple has their hardware like the iPhones and the Macs, so I think it's a lot easier for them to stomach giving OS X for free. It might be a lot harder for Microsoft.

I feel that we will still need to pay for win 9, although I think there will be a significant discount.

Though , as people mentioned, giving windows 9 for free can also benefit microsoft

      • +1

I think it should be at least free for Win 8 users. Some people have bought Windows 8 machines and requested a Windows 7 downgrade, which Microsoft then had to provide downgrade rights for. If microsoft wants people to be using the newest OS, then they should provide the upgrade for free.

I wouldn't be willing to pay for a Win 9 upgrade if all it was were a retweaked UI. There's gotta be changes under the hood as well otherwise it's just another point release dressed up as a whole new version.

  • What's this about Windows 8.1 Pro full version is for Windows 7 users only?. Windows 8.1 full version doesn't require any previous version of Windows to install nor is a requirement under the licensing condition. It will install onto a completely clean hard drive. It says it's the full version which means it's not an upgrade only.

  • +1

Remember peoples this is Windows 8.1 Pro Full Version. No clean install workaround techniques required as it's designed to be installed on a blank hard drive. But it can also act as an upgrade.

  • Can anyone advise on the size of the download please?

    • +1

Apparently going by this 3.69GB for the 64-bit version.

  • Where exactly does the student verification get performed?

    • I'd say it's done automatically through your student email address.

    • As hollykryten said entering a student email (any email ending in .edu)

  • Where can you download fully legit 8.0 Pro and 8.1 Pro ISOs?

An 8.0 key will not work with an 8.1 install.

  • These have probably been linked before, you need a NSW DEC student email:

    Windows 8.1 Pro free:

Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium free:

Other stuff there too (Adobe CC $12.25, Windows 7 free and Office free etc)

    • Yep, used two accounts to get two copies of Windows 8 and Office!

It does have a start button. Left clicking shows all the programs installed, right clicking shows a menu(Control Panel, File Explorer, Search, Run, Shutdown etc)

You'd have to pay me that much to even think about buying it.

This is the 200th time you've made a comment like this.

It's not that you're wrong or right; you're just an imbecile and a broken record.

    • Go buy something Apple you stooge. Seems like all you can grasp.

      • I've never owned an Apple before. My first PC had Windows 3.1 and I've used every Microsoft OS since then, except for Vista and 8.

        • "I've used every Microsoft OS since then, except for Vista and 8" Maybe actually owning and using the OS(for longer than a day) would make yours point seem less conceited…..

  • @undead

  • I'm looking at upgrading my desktop with ebays 15% off. My current desktop runs XP.
Would I be best off installing XP on a new desktop purchase and then wait for the new windows 9, or use this update to windows 8.?
Or am I better off purchasing Windows 8 and installing it clean (no XP)?

  • Hey guys, a little help please?

If one was to use the new key for a new install of the Win 8.1 on my desktop licenced to Win 7 could I then use the old Win 7 key to upgrade my laptop which is still running old Vista?

Seems to make sense to me, anyone believe I would run into any hurdles swapping this between the two devices?

    • You could transfer the Win 7 license ONLY if it was an upgrade, not if it came with the machine.

So the answer for you appears to be NO. It will not even allow you do do it as it will not activate on any machine other that the OEM machine it was licensed to.

      • OK cheers, I was hoping the badge on the back of my Vaio's were only relative to the type of OS and not actually registered for that device only.
I dont mind Win 7 but this could have been an affordable way to upgrade both devices whilst only paying for one new OS.

why u want to pay $ for scrap OS.use the ubuntu 14.04 for free. 100% better than windows os. i hate windows

    • +1

Each to their own. Interesting to note that many people (particularly Linux professionals) despise Ubuntu. Personally I don't like the Unity interface and the opt-out privacy policy. And these are only the surface of the issues.

      https://tim.siosm.fr/blog/2014/04/25/why-not-ubuntu-14.04-lt…

Any IT professional I have spoken to recommended any Linux distro except Ubuntu.

      • +1 for the dislike of unity……

    • Broken drivers still, no gaming, no major apps native, still a spastic mess with dozens of desktop environments and options. Pffft. No wonder its a geeky toy (and always will be).

    • Havent used ubuntu since I installed it as an alternative OS for my PS3 phat.

Im sure it has improved since then but the wifey isnt very clued on with computers hence why I wanted to keep the OS a similar format.

  • Hi,
Sorry if this is a little OT, but I'm running out of ideas. I obtained this deal and have created an iso of the windows installer. The iso was created on 32bit Win7.

However, the installer only seems to want to do 32bit clean installs on 64bit capable hardware. Is there anyway to persuade it to do a 64 bit install?

    Thanks
