  • Has anyone got a good recommendation for an alternative to Acrobat Pro? They've created what's become an effective standard, which isn't open or accessible.

    • +1

Nitro PDF was our GoTo alternative

      • Nitro. Our organisation switched from Adobe that wasn't entertaining any further bulk discounts.

      Yeah GenP or monkrus

    • Bluebeam Revu, although this is mostly relevant for construction industry due to its superior markup & drawing capabilities

      • Revu's a bigger ripoff than Acrobat. Unfortunately it's something I can't find a comparable FOSS alternative for.

        • Since their switch to subscription model its gotten very expensive.

It simply become an essential cost for businesses that requires it. They've created a moat on that niche

I've been using PDFgear, which is free. No doubt it's missing features but for my basic home use needs its been enough.

    • +1

PDF Gear is the ultimate free option for pdf editing and organisation.

    • I've been asking this question myself for more than a decade, but so far I haven't found any alternative that can index PDF files, which is exactly the feature I need.

Just noticed they've deleted their 'Photography 20GB' plan which is really annoying for a casual home user who doesn't need excessive cloud storage.

Photography 20GB used to be like ~$188 a year. Now they're forcing you onto the 1TB plan which is $372.

    • This is annoying. I use this plan. As I have home based cloud storage.
I wish there was some decent cheaper alternative to Lightroom.

    • very annoying: "The Creative Cloud Photography plan (20GB) will be discontinued as of January 15, 2025, and will no longer be available to new subscribers."

Adobe is such a predatory company

    • +4

Couldn't agree more. Cancelling with them is a nightmare. Will never sign up again.

morally correct to pirate adobe software

      • And just wait till you try uninstalling all their bloated apps.

I’m still purging files a year after ridding myself of Adobe. Even Revo struggles to uproot every last byte.

        • +1

Tried the official Creative Cloud Cleaner?

        • I use bulk crap uninstaller and it clears most things

    • I have a perpetual license for one of their software. One day it requires me to reactivate it online. Entered my usual credentials and it failed. Contacted them and they said, sorry you need to subscribe to their new creative cloud. Seriously, why did you sell me a perpetual licence which cost more when it’s not perpetual.

  • +3

Just be mindful that they treat subscriptions like contracts and exiting them is a massive pain.

Not only that, but they automatically re-enter you into another 1 year binding contract rathen than go month to month after month 12.

I went to cancel my contract 1 year after signing up and they advised me there's $200+ termination fee for my new 1 year contract that I never accepted or agreed to.

Are you sure it wasn't in the T&C's fine print? I'm quite sure it would've been.

    • I mean, it is spelled out in their t's&c's. Whether you read that is up to you.

Fwiw, you can usually just tell them you no longer need the subscription, because you have a license through work, and they'll waive the cancellation fee.

Tbh. It’s Easier to pirate adobe than then own it.

    • My workplace were (we since switched to Affinity/Nitro) always having to muck about trying to reset licensing that inexplicably locked the user out

  • +4

For an 'Australian' owned alternative, Canva now own the Affinity suite which has Photo, Designer and Publisher as alternatives to the Adobe offers… Also available as a one time purchase with regular discounts.

    • The day they bring in spot channels in CMYK I'll be making the switch. For now stuck with having to use Photoshop. The price you pay for a 1 year student sub can get you the full Affinity suite.

  • anyone know if it also includes substance painter and designer? I can’t find a full list of the apps on the product page

    • +1

      @Seismic No it doesn't.

      • Apps to try
        Adobe Firefly
        Substance 3D Stager
        Substance 3D Painter
        Substance 3D Sampler
        Substance 3D Designer

      • Ah bugger. Thank you!

  • Anyway to get AutoCad for free?

    • Students can sign up for 1 year free.

  • +1

tip of the day: get disposable credit card for the purchase. you can thank me 1 year after subscription.

    • +1

      Agree. Especially if Lebanese teacher.

  • Isn't subscribing through Lebanon/Turkey still a hack ?

    • I'm currently subscribed through Turkey. They will eventually detect that you're not in your primary country of registration and try and boot you off. You can literally just open task manager and close the process (EG photoshop.exe) and then re-open it and will continue to work.

I'm looking for better alternatives as it's certainly a pain.

      • @michaelkr1 How much is the turkey one? Was a Lebanese teacher before. See you cannot use turkey iOS.

  • How many device we can use at the same time.
