Samsung 840 EVO 250GB $119 @ PLE Computers

1230

Was looking for computer parts when I came across this SSD for a great price. Probably only worth it for those who can pick up in store.

    …here come the Cockburn jokes

How could someone make a joke about that?

Ask JV, or his housemate's proctologist.

      • Yeah it is, I just picked it up

        • So did you just go to the Vic shop and buy it or find a way to check out and select the Vic store for pick up?

        • +2

@King Tightarse: What do you mean find a way? You can just select it.

        NVM.

        • +2

It is listed as "Pickup from Heatherton"

We'll look to get it changed to "Pickup from Heatherton (Vic)" to get any confusion cleared up!

  • Hopefully if this keeps on happening, we might see 250GB SSD's for under the magical $100 mark! :)

    • hmmm, buy now, or wait?

      • +1

Buy now, using a credit card with price-drop protection.

        • +1

          That exists?

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

Sure does, I know 28 Degrees and Coles (and probably others too) offer it. Read this forum post:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101721

For both of them to be free, you have to pay off the entire credit card balance BEFORE the end of your statement period, i.e. before they print your statement.
Note that Coles now has no annual charge, as mentioned in one of the replies.
28 Degrees has always had no annual charge.

I think the volume will pick up more when that price point is reached, but that magic price point will come after the 500GB drives for under $200 mark is reach.

  • Out of stock in WA :(

Been meaning to get another one of these for a while, saw this price and jumped at it, only to see no stock in WA.

    • +1

Still showing in stock for me at Wangara.

    • +1

Nope. Wangara and Bentley are still showing as in stock.

  • Will installing ssd on 4 (or 5) years old laptop can be benefit for the speed etc?
Laptop is core duo with 4gb ram.

    • +5

Yeah for sure, upgrading to a SSD will give a dramatic boost.

      • +1

Be sure it will physically fit!

    • +2

any thing produced after 2009 can see a huge boost with SSD
i can even turn PC and Mac as far back as 2007 to machines rival those purchased today with SSD.

    • +1

If it's Core Duo I don't think you'll see the full benefit of the drive. That laptop (I think) only has a SATA2 interface, limiting read and writes to I think about 250MB/s. This drive has a SATA3 interface, which is limited to ~550MB/s.

However, like others have said, it will still provide a huge benefit over a mechanical hard drive. It still has fantastic benefits related to how quickly it can access random files spread out over the disk; a serious limitation of mechanical drives. This will speed up your OS and running apps in general. If this is a laptop you use quite often and are going to continue using you will see a great benefit from this drive, and even if you upgrade you can just pop this drive in the new laptop.

      • +2

The bulk of the benefit comes from the massive reduction in latency caused by the rotating disk. This is where speeds can increase by 50 times or better. Large file writing will still be much faster than a HDD, but it may only be 2 or 3 times, compared to 4 or 6 times with SATA3.

  • I don't know much about SSD's but have read many comments on the huge improvement in load up speeds. I am going to finally buy one tomorrow (Wangara) and was thinking if it could be installed in my laptop? My laptop is a small Acer Aspire 1430 11.6" notebook which I got 4 years ago, still runs great but just slow on startup and loading programs (word pdf etc.).

If it doesn't fit in my laptop though, I can always install it in my PC as my second option.

    • +1

My computer takes about 2 seconds to load up.Now I don't even have time to grab water in between :/

    • As long as your Acer has a 2.5" Sata hhd this Samsung will fit as it is currently the thinnest made @ 7mm. for this type of SSD. You will be happy with improvement.

  • I live in Sydney. Any chance of price match with stores here?

    • +1

      I doubt it.

  • +1

I wasn't even aware of PLE. Not too far from me (I usually go to MSY Cheltenham VIC). I will be sure to keep them in my rotation when I'm looking for parts.

    • At these prices I don't blame you.

  • +3

    Why it say $139? Expire?

    • Seems like..

  • Whenever I see SSD deals a few $ cheaper than the last I think of that scene in Family Guy.

    Lower Esteban….

    Lower…
