Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite $29 at Coles [Limited Stock and Selected Stores]

1930

Coles is currently clearing out the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite for $29 each.

This is a much better tablet than the one DSE was selling recently - it's cheaper, has a better screen (higher resolution and IPS - better viewing angles) more RAM and it has Bluetooth. The only downside is that stock will be limited and you'll have to go out to hopefully get one.

Details from the box:

  • Android 4.0+
  • 7" IPS WSVGA (1024x600)
  • Capacitive Touch Panel
  • Cortex-A8 CPU
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 4100 mAh battery
  • Model: S7-931w
  • Colour: White

A few more details not listed on the box:

  • Single Core 1.2 GHz CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB Internal Flash
  • MicroSD slot for up to 32GB card
  • 5V 2A USB Power Supply and USB A to Micro USB cable included
  • Front and Rear Cameras
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wifi
  • Built in GPS receiver
  • No Phone/3G capability

Although it's only a single core CPU, it's actually not that bad to use - certainly can't complain about the performance at this price!

My wife has had one of these for about 18 months and it has been pretty good bar a few minor glitches. I picked up the last one at Coles Marsden (QLD) for the kids to use for watching videos in the car.

Edit: A few people have asked if it has GPS and it does. Some have also asked if it has 3G data capability - the units that we have don't have 3G, but some people are reporting that theirs does - maybe they got really lucky and got a different model.

Update: Multiple reports now say that price has gone up to $49

All boxes at Coorparoo store were marked WiFi. Doubt any were 3G.

  • Just called Coles Campbellfield and Glenroy VIC - none in stock :( Damn… want very much

  • +2

None left Coorparoo or Woolloongabba. Got the last one at Greenslopes. The very helpful guy there said they had sold out and heaps of people were asking. He then came and found us shopping in the store to say they had found one pushed up the back of the drawer. A very happy 9yo.

  • Well no luck for me . All sold around Logan (Qld) .

  • Doncaster didn't have it but had the $39 Pendo Pad.

  • None in Newcastle or the junction.

  • None at Coles St Clair South Australia.

  • just got one at melville store - one was left!

  • Did anyone end up snatching the $39 Pendo Pad instead?

  • A dumb question but how can I download youtube videos and then watch offline without the need of internet?

    • use an app called txd. google it. it got banned from the playstore.

  • +1

Has anyone else had any luck picking one up with 3G?

  • Managed to grab one that I've been eyeing for a few weeks at my local BiLo. Staff had no idea it was discounted, still had a price of $80 on it. So far so good, nothing fancy but perfect for round the house.

  • No more at coles broadway

  • Managed to get one from Coles Victoria Park (WA). Am genuinely impressed. Sure, it's low-res. But 1GB of RAM means it doesn't get stuck quickly at all. Installed a bunch of things, and all runs well. The built-in DLNA app works very well, and am impressed with the sound quality on this thing. My 2.5y/o will be very pleased :)

I feel bad having to spend 25% of the purchase price on a case, but if I don't it will be broken soon. Cheapest I could find was http://www.banggood.com/7-Inch-Folding-Stand-Cover-Leather-C…

    • are there still any left there? did you get the 3g one?

      • +1

Only 1 report of 3G. Either that was a fluke, or mistake.

      • +1

Don't know if any left. No, not a 3g.

So many of you claim to have gotten one, but did not bother to leave a positive vote for the person who took the time to let you know about it.

If you don't know how, simply click on the vote buttons up the top left.

  • I got one just now. Have yet to open.

  • sorry folks, what does running a root pack mentioned earlier in the thread in regards to this unit? Any benefit? (besides possibility voiding warranty?)

  • None left at the World Square store in Sydney. I called them and the guy there said he wanted one too…

  • Got last one at Coles Lindfield yesterday.

Seems to be fairly decent for what it is. Planning to use mine for media while travelling and a remote for a media PC.

    • Had a chance to use it now:

For what it is seems fairly decent. UI for the most part seems to be fairly responsive.

Remote applications for XBMC seemed to work ok (Yatse, Mediapump)

The included DLNA app works well with the DLNA server on a Synology device. Have tried DLNA, Youtube, Streaming from Windows Share(solid explorer) which works ok, apart from the beginning where it plays a bit erratically. Viewing angle seems to be fairly decent, as does sound.

There is no auto brightness on the device.

The CPU in this is very weak. Compared to other devices I have:
      Passmark benchmarks:
      Note II 2,546
      Galaxy s2 1,706
      Xoom 1560
      Mediapad lite 822

      Issues noticed with performance:
-Web browser: Can't handle a page with a few animated gifs
-Web browser: Not too happy with multiple tabs
-Games: Newer games don't work well
      -Angry Birds: Crashes
-Video: First few seconds it plays a little erratically. Afterwards it seems to be ok
-One App which downloads a additional file and unpacks it took ages before it was ready.

Battery lasted about a day, this could be due to installing apps - According to other reviews though, it is pretty terrible. According to battery use "Tablet Idle" is using the battery.

Build quality seems to be fairly decent with aluminium back. Not too creaky. Found the volume control being reversed a little odd

      Summary
      Pros
      -Cost
-Android seems to be mostly unmodified
-Don't appear to be any third party roms (XDA threads are for other Mediapad models)

      Cons:
      -Slow
      -Battery Life
      -Storage space - only 4gb

For me, it's a decent purchase, with a 64gb card will provide entertainment(video, ebooks) for flights although battery life may be a concern.

      • Good review.

[These were being cleared out 17 months ago by Coles, so old technology - hence the low price.]

I've had no problems with mp4 movies using pre-installed video player or MX Player. Have quite a few apps installed. May depend on file type.

      • I don't think it can handle cards bigger than 32GB (not 64GB as you mentioned).
I put in a spare 16GB card I had lying around, and worked great. No issues with playing movies. Youtube works fine in HD as well. The build quality is very impressive.

As for the volume button working in reverse: some tablets do this when you are in landscape mode (right=louder, left=softer), while in portrait the "up" (formerly "left/softer") becomes "louder". My phone does this. I find it quite alright.

Hope those bought the wifi modem/mediapad bundle for $139 don't feel too bad. Well the life of ozbargain - grab it now to feel happy or live with high hope of getting it cheaper later.

    • $139 17 months ago - "am more than happy with it for the price I paid. Probably won't play top-end games but I don't need it for that. It's a really decent budget tablet imo" :-)

  • none at Robina TC

  • Just picked up one from the Coles in Westfield, Geelong. They have at least another one there that I saw. Possibly more out back

  • Was just curious what apps have you guys installed on this device ? And also what will be your main use for this tablet?

I will be using it to watch Movies.

    • +1

      Main use: returning it

Screen is so dark, watching movies is difficult. Don't tilt the screen, or it will go black. Don't expect to share the experience - again off angle viewing is very poor. Sound is too low, but you can use headphones to fix that.

Bought the Huawei 7" - better build, much better viewing experience plus Bluetooth for better sound (good enough through speaker), at a cheaper price :-)

Was handy to be able to compare both devices playing same movie.

      • Ignore that - posting comments on 2 tablet deals. I was referring to the DGTech tablet, not this one. Sorry.

Brought last one from Berwick,VIC. None left there or in Cranbourne, Cranbourne West, Lynbrook, Springhill, Casey Central, or Hampton park, CarromDowns. VIC. CarrumDowns Coles do have 7" pendopad ($39) in stock. And for build quality, I am happy with this one lot better that pendopad 7" which was on display. Can't compare performance of both as I didn't had hands on pendopad. This have few cons browsing through chrome quits unexpectedly, then realized u have to take it slow not to open more than 2 tabs likewise. Still ok for $29. I brought one of those pink color kids dummy laptop which plays only alphabets and music few months back for my Niece pretty sure payed around $30 for that.

    Comment follows

Learnt my lesson, made comment about pendo pads, went back to stores, none left at one , 8gone and only one 7 and one 10already opened and would not sell for that reason , at other store. Would have liked the 8 even though it was ice cream. Sad face. Good work here King Tightarses .

Good luck to anyone that can get one at that price!

    • The special already ended today just came back from Coles.

  • Seems weird for an item to go on clearance and then back up in price.
It wasn't an advertised special AFAIK.

  • Yeah, it is $49 today.
