Notes: (correct me if I'm wrong)
- The Technet subscription gives you one year access to Technet (renewals will cost you about the same as the discounted price)
- It gives you up to 10 permanent licenses for each available Microsoft software. You don't have to renew your subscription after the first year to keep using your software.
- The licenses are not for use in production environments (i.e. don't use it commercially except for testing).
- A bargain if you have several computers at home that you want to upgrade to Windows 7 and install MS Office on.

  • Be aware you need to read the license and note, as the OP has mentioned, that it is not for use in production environments and you have to be the sole user of the machine.

So hypothetically for example if you lived at 10 different houses, say your family and friends places, you could have 10 legit installations of Windows 7 and Office 2007 for $38.40 per computer?

      • AANAL but i think the EULA considers using at home is a 'production' environment. Technet is more for testing by sysadmins, and I think it restricts you to machines you exclusively use and/or own.

Whirlpool forums have quite a long discussion about it… so probably you should head that way to find out ;)

Ok so if im reading this correctly for $384 I get to use W7 & Office on up to 10 machines?
The licenses are not for use in production environments (i.e. don’t use it commercially except for testing)? ehm exactly what does this mean? Not for use in a business just @ home?

    • That's the way I read it…
I'm going to contact some of the people who own other places where I "live" to see if they're interested in me upgrading "my" computers…

  • Technet gives you access to pretty much all the Microsoft range of software, not just Windows and Office.
Technet subscriptions can still be used in an office environment, but the installations can only be used in testing environments. ie. They're not supposed to be installed on your everyday work computer.

Technet was mainly designed for evaluation purposes… of course that doesn't stop people from listening. :)

  • Sadly the 40% off promo code expired in the 31st of July.

  • when does this expire? it says today… but today when?

    • Offer expires October 31st 2009!

  • So if for testing are these full editions or beta's & do they get updated espec the W7 & the newer office 2010 when it comes out?

    • +1

Windows 7 RTM is already out on Technet….

  • Yeah read about it being on technet re the W7 but is it a full edition or like the W7 beta or RC time limited as I tried the RC already on a PC.

    • It's the RTM version, i.e. the one that will be released to the public on October 22.

    • Did you bother to read the post? Windows 7 RTM! Release to Manufacturing!

  • +2

    30% off code TNSCP09N30

  • 30% works

  • Yeah hurbert I read but RTM abbreviation didnt say what the RTM meant, thats why I was asking?

  • So would I later be eligible to get an Ultimate version of Win7?

  • Whats the catch with this? I dont get why MS would sell full access to (potentially) thousands of dollars of software for under $400

    • It's supposed to be for developers.. and not a general public thing..

The more developers using the latest version of Windows, means more software designed to run on the latest Windows = more demand for people to go and buy the latest Windows = more money for MS..

      • What you're describing is more the MSDN subscription. Technet does not include Visual Studio. Technet is more for the IT admins that have to support all these applications in an office network. They have to be able to evaluate the software to see if it fits the purpose of the business and if it plays well with the rest of the infrastructure. They are busy guys and a 30-day trial is never enough.

The 'catch' is that they are not supposed to use it on production systems. Another is that this 'feast' may encourage them to keep using Microsoft software.

  • Something to note…

Access to all TechNet Plus resources via the members-only TechNet Plus benefits portal for an individual user. Does not include DVD shipments.

  • So what we are signing up for is basically technet, and then get access to windows 7 etc after that?
Or do we pay for the subscription then get a 25% off code to purchase windows 7?

    • Sign up to technet for access to the software.. the fee is to join Technet..

  • Better be quick to get the Windows 7 RC from the TechNet site for free.
    It ends TODAY.
File is 3.05GB and if its too large, can get a copy of Australian PC User which has a DVD with Windows 7 RC on it.

I think you still need a Product key and they will still be avaliable for a while longer.

    Have fun with Win 7

  • Can anybody confirm that:

    1. You get 10 licenses for all software available on technet (W7, Office, etc)
    2. Those licenses will never expire, even if we need to reinstall.
    3. The licenses do not need to be used on the same computer, or even the same address.

I really think this could be a killer deal if the above three points are definitely the case.

    • In response to your questions:

      1) I've issued over 5 product keys for some products on my Technet subscription, I imagine there is a limit & 10 might be it, but I can't confirm for sure. Some of the products just supply a single, generic, product key that can be used on as many machines as you want.
      2) The product keys will never expire, you can re-use them on reinstalls, for new computers, etc. Personally, I keep a database of which product key I assigned to which computer - I work in ICT and pesonally use a lot of different computers so need this database to keep track so I know which product keys can be reused. While your product keys will never expire & the product will keep working you will no longer be legitimately licensed to use the product if you terminate your Technet subscription - currently, any products activations that talk back to Microsoft continue to function even if you terminate your Technet subscription.
      3) The licenses can be used on any computers, anywhere, as long as they are used by you for non-production use (whatever that means).

  • If you work in IT, potentially this subscription is tax deductible too…. (DISCLAIMER: Confirm with your account though)

  • RE: crownies comment thats for the RC (Release Candidate) this is the RTM (Release To Manufacturing) is the download shut off time not different?
