Its so powerful it could cook a raw frozen chicken in under an hour if you leave it sitting on top.

      • +1

Oh great, so we can use it as a grill? I should install it in Backyard, Use it for Wifi/BBQ.

          I like your random capitals.

        • @koozilla: Capital is love, capital is Life.

  • Very tempting! Great find thanks mate!

  • Thank you! is a separate modem required?

    • +2

      Yes. It is required.

    • +4

Yes. This is a router only. If you want to use it with ADSL etc you will also need a separate modem. If your lucky enough to have NBN, then nothing else is needed.

      • OK - thank you both!

    R7000 is $175.80 delivered with CDICKSMITH20

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261454137316

    • Thanks! Got the R7000 instead

  • Wow that dropped in price pretty fast

  • +1

    And just purchased!

The R7000 as posted by bctransit is very tempting at $175 but I thought for an extra $43 why not just get the best of the best. Probably not going to notice much difference, but meh.

I am also getting NBN activated in my street very soon (got the NBN letter last week) so may as well get everything ready!

    • good luck there. if you get connected quickly and without delay you are doing better then myself and others i know.

      • Yep NBN co suck balls and you can't even call them to tell them that they suck em.

  • Everything drops in price eventually I know, and I'm not moving for another 3-4 months - any point buying this now? Help! I'm so tempted!

    • Tempting, but the new Asus RT-AC87U looks good, although another $100 more? I am waiting.

      • +1

Me too. I think the ASUS RT-AC87U is released in Australia tomorrow based on some computer shop websites (http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Networking_-_Wireless/Rou…). Do you think the AC87U will be better than the Netgears? There's also the ASUS RT-AC3200 with 6 antennas coming out, but that'll be a while yet. Can't wait for it forever though I suppose, because there's always going to be something newer and better. I'm going to bite the bullet and get the AC87U.

The R8000 was rushed to market. Its two "wave 1" chips instead of a "wave 2" chip. What does that mean? It's missing single radio MU-MIMO and 160 MHz.

MU-MIMO - Old wireless routers are as fast as the slowest device. With MU-MIMO, spectrum is split up, so if you have a slow device, a fast device can use the rest of the spectrum. Or you can have more slow devices without worrying about time division multiplexing (not that you would, this is done automatically).

But because the R8000 duel radio, it has the potential to be better than a "wave 2" device because it means two chips deal with the 2.4GHz spectrum. "Wave 2" devices are currently only 5GHz for MU-MIMO. Most people have 2.4GHz devices, meaning "wave 2" chipsets are mostly useless for most users at present.

It's my monthly drunk gaming night (I'm waiting for a hack to work). Sorry for incoherency.

        • @This Guy:

I think I'll wait for the ASUS.

  • Nice price just bought, but in my haste.. forgot to use Cash Rewards for my 2%.. cash back … damn it!

"the ac3200 series router are nothing but 2 x 5 gig 1300M transmissions and 1 x 2.4 gig 600M transmission in 1 box , and surprise surprise thats where you get the AC3200 from , so the faster sync speed you will get out of this is 1300M with any one device"

Not shitting on this, just thought this was a relevant read before deciding to purchase.

    • Chips and everything is probably the same as the R7000.

    • +1

      Almost misleading to consumers…

  • The thing looks like a drone

  • Can this be used with a cable modem.
Sorry if it's such a noob question.

    • Yes.. this will allow you have wireless access using the internet provided by cable or adsl modems.

  • For the price, couldn't really say no!!

Damn my credit card is loving me recently LOL

  • WOW, I just bought the R7000 a month ago …

  • +1

Makes me wish I needed more bandwidth. But I haven't even got any devices that support AC (or even wireless 'n' on the 5Ghz band for that matter - silly Chromecast), and am still really liking my $30 DD-WRT enabled Dlink Router. The way the NBN is going, this will suit my needs to the next 25 years or so.

I snoozed and therefore I lost. Sold out. Missed out by seconds!

In any case, $218 is the new benchmark

  • I decided to go with the R7000 as Cnet review on R8000 is pretty negative . A plus from me anyways

  • Only recently got the R7000 with is 1900 AC dam!!

    • Don't sweat too much, the R7000 is a great piece of kit.

  • On the 19th August someone paid $399 for it. Ouch!

    • Let's hope that someone paid with coles or 28 degrees mc

  • When does the code expire? In case it comes back in stock or possibly for buying the R7000

  • It doesn't show up as sold out for me?

    • Looks like they have refreshed stock levels.

If you missed out this is your chance people!

      • Sold out again

        • few more appeared again

        • 6 more available! Quick quick!

Not sure how their inventory system works…

  • Some comments in the review suggest that based on price that it's not worth it for the increase in features. That was when it was $399 AUD however…at this price, it's now great value.

  • What's behind the design of this thing? Has form taken a higher precedent over function? What happens if you accidentally damage an antenna?

After reading reviews (that also list real world performance), and noticing the dust magnet vents on the top of the R8000, plus its wankerish design, I would still purchase a R7000.

  • Why you do this to me!!!

  • What is a good adsl2 modem to go with this?

    In another thread they suggested:

From my experience Netcomm or Tplink ones seem to do ok.

If you live close to the exchange something like a TP Link 8817($29) modem should get the job done else you will be better off with a modem with a Broadcom chipset.

  • Hmm, how long before the price of R8000 drops to $170 which the R7000 currently is?

    • Probably when the next model above this one gets released.

$218.26 for a router that the RRP is $399 aint too bad. Problem is when the next version gets released you might wait again.

  • What the hell? this is the cheapest price on earth atm for this router. Wish I have the NBN to enjoy it full pro-tential.

  • I am not sure their stock level is accurate at all. I ordered this unit using a weekend promo code 2 weeks ago when they said they had stock. A couple of days later I received an email from DSE advising a Star Trak tracking number and an invoice. So I use the tracking number and the Star Trak website indicates "Notified" which (after a phone call to Star Trak) I find out means not available to pick up from them. Then I made 2 phone calls to DSE to find out what is going on, the first call I was hung up on, the second call the operator said dispatch would occur Monday (just gone). No change to the tracking details yet on the Star Trak website. So I used the email contact form to request a firm dispatch date… no reply. Any suggestions here please?

    • My order was marked as shipped about 40 minutes after placing my order - received both shipping confirmation and invoice emails.

I would suggest trying to call them up again and see if you can get another update on your order, otherwise it might be easier to just cancel your order and wait for another deal.

      • Interesting that I received a response to my contact form request just a few minutes after I made the above post. I am grateful to hear back from them though with "replacement unit to be dispatched to my address" (presumably and hopefully sometime soon) and "We apologise for the inconvenience caused".
Wonder if I will get it by the end of the week… hmmm, watch this space!

  • Out of stock!

    • Still showing up for me but bought the r7000. The reviews of the r8000 have a few people saying the wifi signal isn't that strong. If so disappointing for something of its size

  • mixed reviews, but majority say it's a decent router. the advertisements really praise it. great price!

  • To me it looks more like a dead spider than a hawk.

    • +1

Since you said that, it doesn't look as cool anymore.

  • Showing full price for me now at $399

    • Interesting, they have also put up the R7000 to $319.

I hope these were not a price error…

      • It shouldn't be, mine just got delivered this morning! :)

        • when did you order

        • @dy4me:

          Around 1PM yesterday arvo.

        • @kevjutsu:
Well that was quick. especially for Dick smith

        • @dy4me:

DSE shipments are scheduled to happen between 1 and 1:30 PM so if you get your order in before 1 PM there is a big chance you get it the next business day

        • @andrew81:
Is this just for their Ebay store or also from their web store? In the past i have waited for day for soem orders and others come pretty much in 2 days. Syd here

      • I guess they did that purposely to make people who purchased the item during the sale feeling better

  • I have an R7000. Great router. WiFi was slightly weaker than my old 7800N with upgraded antennae. So went on ebay and got some upgraded antennae for the R7000. WiFi is super strong now :)

  • just got mine does anyone know how to remote access the files on the usb from another network??

  • Looks like no stock in Brissy at the moment … so seems like mine will take some time to arrive.
