    Get a3000, better kit lens. Sony a3500 is a joke with a stripped down version of lens (SEL1850 instead of SEL1855, shorter zoom, no image stabilization).

    OP need to correct the title, it is technically not DSLR, it is a mirrorless. And the lens is only 18-50mm, not the standard 18-55mm.

    I own the a3000, loving it. The body is basically the same as a3500, with a better kit lens. Viewfinder and display resolution is horrible, but great image quality, and hotshoe for my flashgun. Perfect for people on a budget. (Got mine few months ago from TGG for $283)

    • A friend bought this from Costco and returned next day as kit lens doesn't have manual focus ring. Previous model's kit lens had it. it looks like downgrade instead of upgrade from previous model

  • Can the experts comment how this model competes with Nikon and Canon equivalents?

      The sensor is very good (in fact one of the best APS-C sensors), and when paired with good glass, it can take some extremely high quality pics. However they've marketed this towards the low end budget/beginner though, so the build is very cheap/hollow (but light) and the EVF and LCD are both so grainy and low res it borderlines on unusable. FYI the lens provided with this is just junk. It's a stripped down version of the original NEX 18-55 kit lens that for some reason Sony has chosen to sell it to the Australian market only. The lens has less range, no image stabilization and made of cheaper materials. The previous a3000 body is exactly the same as the a3500 body.

        The previous a3000 body is exactly the same as the a3500 body.

        Except slower. They cut down on the buffer as well to a laughable 6 frames of jpg.

      This is a pretty crappy camera. Slow, poor viewfinder and a poor lens.

      The a3000 has been on special for the same price and is a better deal. Not sure if you will find one now though. See the previous deal on this:

    • Okay experts, gonna pass.

      Can you recommend a Canon/Nikon DSLR in <300$ (on sale) range? Newbie here on photography. I know I have missed several 1100D deals - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/canon-eos-1100d

    SO what sales starts on 21 August? or is it only for this camera?

  • +3

    OP you should really change the title.
    The α3500 is not a DSLR, it is a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera or MILC.

  • Can anyone recommend a camera around $400? It's for a gift and I'm completely out of my depth. Used mainly for stills/documenting artwork. Would be a bonus to have a HD recording fuction, but not a deal breaker.
    Can be DSLR or mirrorless, though portability isn't a huge factor. Just want good shots.

    • bingliee sells a3000 for $299, limited stock;
      des sells epls3 for $299;
      or looks for canon 1100d sometimes sold for $299.
