  • ahhh tempted but what should i do with my old 6 slot protector?

  • +2

Guys, are electrical surges likely to happen in Australia? I never experienced it…

    • In Queensland are quite common, many a people lost IT equipment (mostly comms) to surges generated by storms…

    • Yes. I've lost several modems due to surges during electrical storms (in Sydney). Not sure if that came in through the power line or phone line, better to protect both.

      • ditto, lost my router to one a few months back. Ended up buying a belkin powerboard surge protector with up to $500k warranty on connected devices.

    • +4

I work in IT. I see heaps of stuff die on a regular basis from power surges. But, you are much better off with a power board that filters the power rather than just protects against surges.

    • Same, I've managed to go my entire life without an issue.

Although with a recent purchase of a Wii U and PS4 I purchased one from DSE mostly because I think the only thing a surge would do to my computers is kill the PSU.

Same, I've managed to go my entire life without an issue.

        Nek minnit…

I think it depends on where you live. I've never had a power surge in all the suburbs in Brisbane I've lived in. I only recall about 3 power cuts in the past ~15 years too.

But just like screen protectors, some people see it as cheap insurance. In fact some Belkin ones come with actual insurance if your equipment gets damaged.

      • +2

Same as the DSE ones. They're the ones I use as I've managed to grab them on special a few times. Definitely recommend them over this "insane" deal.

      • Speaking of insurance … anyone know if items are covered for power surges by your typical home contents insurance?

    • +1

Yes, quite common in North Queensland. Trying to prove a power surge damaged your precious computer or other electrical equipment can prove a nightmare for insurance purposes. We had a policy of never having a freezer up there because of the frequent power cuts. Not only that to contend with but I once went through 3 phones that had burnt out sockets … questionable lightning strikes. All the glass light fittings in a row of townhouses exploded one night during a lightning storm. We figure the lightning hit the metal pipe that enclosed the wiring to all these units. Not only the roads that need replacing each year; something you have to live with up there.

    • +2

Okay. If power surges are so common in Australia, why don't we install something that'll cover the whole house, not just a PC or modem or TV?

    • +1

Friend's cable got hit by lightning. Blew the modem, the network hub, and every connected network card in the house. Amusingly all the computers they were in survived.

edit: this was back in 90's, running coax network and prior to the prevalence of integrated lan

I bought one of these last time when they were $28 shipped. It's bloody useful as I've got things I want to charge overnight and it's convenient to be able to just select one outlet to turn on.

    At $20 I think it's still a good buy :)

    • Are the usb ports working well on yours?

  • +10

525 joules with 2 nanosecond clamping is so little "protection". You would literally want three times that amount and at less than one nanosecond.
Dangerous as it sucks people in that they have made an effort with the subject of surge protection and that the problem is sorted, when it definitely it's not.
    Bordering on fraud.

This isn't really a surge protector.

A surge protector will have a connected equipment warranty because it is very difficult for a surge protector to actually protect your equipment. I don't think I've ever heard "So I got a surge last night and I'm off to replace the board because it protected me"

I would much rather trust a UPS without a connected warranty or a surge protector with a connected warranty.

So its pointless wasting your money on this as its almost guaranteed not to do anything.

    • +2

Would you even realise if a surge had occurred and it protected any devices attached to it?

the price is being the same since 2 month because I bought one last month.the blue light always on which is annoying. you save shipping this time, but apart from that no deal.

  • 'Energy saver function cuts power to peripheral devices on standby' is one most unstable feature that i've ever experienced with this line of product and often doesn't have turn off button for it.

    • I was going to make a comment regarding how does this work. It sounds like it could be great if it worked correctly but does it and I could see it being potentially annoying if it doesn't heh.

  • +2

I had one of these. Lasted for 4 years. I finally fried (It was short circuiting). All appliances still worked which is main thing. Not sure whether it was due to power surge or not. I probably wouldn't use it again for primary one like TV, etc. However, bought 2 for low level devices like charging phone, pc, etc. I like the fact has usb and also individual switches.

Doesn't have insurance for your appliances. So, buy at your risk. I just see it really as heavy duty adaptor. I wouldn't fully trust it as surge protector. Thats consistant with someone else comments on the thread.

I bought this last time it was on sale and can't recommend them.

King Tightass has already commented on the extremely limited "surge protection", I can't get my tablet to charge off the 2.1A or 1A USB ports (I've tested multiple devices and multiple cables), and some of the switch indicator globes (or possibly LEDs) have already failed.

Also the "Energy saver function cuts power to peripheral devices on standby" isn't mentioned anywhere on the box/manual/powerboard, and I think is being incorrectly attributed in the advertising.

For what is therefore essentially a switched powerboard, this isn't a bargain price.

    • I've had this issue on and off. Currently both USB ports work fine though.

    • +1

Ugh, of course I see this after I buy the bastard. Guess I'll just have to use it as a tablet / phone / eReader charger instead of powering my desk.

      • It'll definitely work as a charger for your devices if you use wall warts. From other comments in the thread it seems that some people don't have the inbuilt USB charging issues that others have also described, so hopefully you'll be lucky.

Also, as context, I paid ~$8 for mine because I had some outstanding COTD credit. I think it is reasonable for that price, but my comments and neg were to warn that the device's advertising leaves quite a bit to be desired and that the energy saver function is phantomware.

Stick to the dse ones when they go on sale every so often

    Was a sale (expired) recently:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153144

    • Yes I bought one of those too. Just haven't decided where I will use it; for the computer equipment or the television, etc. gear. Ah well, the computer needs replacing anyways :o)

  • +3

I'm in the same boat as tplen1. Bought two of them last time, and can't get any device to charge via any of the usb ports. COTD offered a refund but I couldn't be assed posting it to them. Would not buy again.

    • +1

I also bought one last time and so far it's ok. I haven't had any problems charging my phones and tablet from it's usb ports, but I can't verify the quoted output currents. The only thing I didn't like was that the usb ports are constantly powered. I think there should have been a switch to turn them off when not needed.
