Dick Smith Surge Interceptor 8-Way Surge Board $20.44 and $4.95 for Delivery

1260

Please note as tomsco pointed out if you add the item to your cart and check out, it's still $20.44
Price is now $69.98 in cart on DSE site, but eBay price is still $20.44

I bought one of these these Dick Smith Surge Interceptors when it was previously on sale and have been keeping an eye out because I wanted to get another. They've been posted on OzBargain quite a few times so I guess they are quite popular, see here. Postage for me in Melbourne works out to $4.95. I believe they haven't been as cheap as this in over a year and I'm not sure when this deal ends.

  • As hollykryten pointed out, this is also available on their eBay Store

  • As eecan mentioned if you are buying more than one, postage for mulitples is still $4.95 on the eBay store, whereas it's $4.95 per item on the Dick Smith website.

  • A few people have said buying from Dick Smith's eBay store is more reliable than their online store.

  • Looks like a good deal.

Black version is $20.77 but it's a 6 way. Strange how the white 8 way is cheaper than the black 6 way.

    • You're right, I noticed there's a few other power boards for sale at Dick Smith, I've added them in. Sadly I bought the 12 outlet HPM from Masters for $37 last weekend /sob!

  • Wouldn't mind getting this. Seems a good one at a good price.

  • the black version is 6 way where as white is 8 way

    • Thanks, added your eBay link as well mate.

      • Cool. Must feel sorry for the person who paid $69.98 on 29 June 2014. But what a dill.

        • That was the 20% off weekend at Dick smith. So not quite as bad.

        • +6

          Obviously not a Professional.

  • interesting to see what happens for those who order if actually get their items I have also noticed the 4pc LSD AA rechargeable batteries are $1.85 on eBay again do not see to be on the website, my advice anyway is stay away from DSE. Would like to also add never got my batteries from the 1st sale never mind the Logitech game pads I ordered.

    • They are all gone. I got mine from the first battery sale, though they are in packs of 2, not 4.

      • +1

I got treated the same way. It's really not good enough that they half your number of batteries and send you a lower capacity. Dick Smith is running an illegal bait and switch tactic.

        • Oh right, I didn't realise the 2pk batteries have lower capacity than 4pks. 2000mah vs 2200mah, thanks for the information. And although I got these batteries, the ebay order has not been marked as posted, maybe I should request them to send me my original 4pks?

    • I've just cancelled an order for a couple of $5.00 ear buds from DSE and pleased it wasn't a $1500 item. But a good way for a company to generate some short term cash flow, advertise stuff at heavily discounted prices and get payments rolling in for orders knowing that they don't have enough stock to fill them.

  • Thanks. Just bought one off their ebay store.

Get in early should have a better chance of scoring one at this price since there's only currently 23 sold on their ebay store. I was number 21 i believe.

  • Free delivery tomorrow?

    • Considering that Dick Smith just recently increased their free delivery qualification from $99 to $499 i doubt they'll be doing store wide free shipping again any time in the near future?. The free delivery must have been cutting into their profits. We'll see.

  • +1

Looks like eBay is cheaper if you're buying a few (If you buy 2 boards you save $5 on postage - $9.95 vs $4.95).

    • Cheers you're right, updated the OP

  • i bought one of these when it last went on sale - quite a solidly built unit and a bargain for the price and the peace of mind for protection of your valuable electronic assets

  • +1

Gone from about 15 sold to 53 sold on their ebay store within an hour. Sales seem to be picking up.

  • I rather buy it from Dick Smith than ebay. Support Australia when possible if the price differences is insignificant.

    • But you're not buying it from ebay you're buying from Dick Smith Online through ebay. It's the same price on both the Dick Smith main website and the Dick Smith ebay store. Both are bought from Dick Smith which is the merchant.

      • +6

I think dk is referring to ebay fees…giving all the money to dick, instead of letting ebay take a cut offshore.

        • +2

I see. At least on ebay you can neg them if they renege on the deal :)

        • -6

I think dk is referring to ebay fees

I'm not sure he is, eBay isn't Australian, so how is it 'support Australia' as he suggests.

  • Been waiting for this! Thx op

  • does it have those 'keyholes' for mounting?

edit: welp, as a true bargain hunter i did a quick search and ended up cheaping out and getting one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261531181338?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN… it looks solid enough and the feedback is good.

    • +1

Unless the design has changed since I bought mine, two four-way holes at the back. Not those annoying 'keyhole' ones that only allow mounting in a single orientation.

      • thanks for the info, very useful.

too bad i already got something else, at least as of waking up i haven't regretted it yet :)

  • +3

OP, I strongly recommend you change the primary URL to the eBay link.
Dick Smith appears unable to count stock correctly, let alone work out that stock sold through their eBay store is no no longer available for sale through their web store.
If you buy through the web store and they're out of stock, they refund without so much as a "sorry, we stuffed up". But they seem to treat their eBay clientèle more carefully because of the feedback mechanism. Basically, they are required to provide better service, and are unlikely to leave customers high and dry.

    • +2

I can vouch for that. Been screwed over plenty of times by their website. But their Ebay store has always treated me well.

      • Yeah that's why i bought it off their ebay store.

      • I've updated the OP to say that people recommend buying off their eBay store than their website

    • +3

i don't think they care for eBay either 200+ neg feedback in 1 month is pretty awful..

      • +1

Whoa. Normally I don't go near sellers below 99%. They have 96% which is terrible.

  • I bought two and hopefully gave my cashrewards account it's first little bit of rewards. Thanks for deal

  • Bought this directly from the Dick Smith, paid with a discounted Wish card and it was accepted. Amazing, Dick is not even mentioned on these cards anyone. Interesting to see if it goes through. Worth the risk if you want to get a few extra percent discount.

  • +1

Best ever OzB purchase I made.

Paid for 2 at this price last year (or the year before - I forget), they messed up the order and I ended up with 4 :)

I wish you many lucks in getting the same administrative error as I did, OzB.

  • Cheers bought 4 more :D

  • +1

    Good deal.

But I really can't live without wide-spaced sockets. Every 2nd gadget seems to have transformer plugtop or 90° USB etc. My old 5 or 6-way near PC had 3 different double adapters, for socket-access only.

    • Looks like there are 2 wide sockets on it.

  • +1

Can someone comment about the usefulness of this device, I live in Melbourne and not sure if we get power surges as I have never required one of these before so would love to know what you guys think.

    • +2

Well a few years ago one my mate's parents were using a decades old power board and they had a power surge. They had a had a rear projection TV plugged into that old power board which was worth around $5000 at that time and it took it out. It was the only device in the house which was damaged.
Secondly my Aunty had a fire which badly damaged several rooms of their house, the fire brigade said the mostly likely cause was a faulty power board. Also it's not a bad idea to put covers on empty power board sockets or have them on a side as dust can cause fires. http://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=630

  • Thanks, bought 2 from their eBay store for $45.83.

Pirce for 1 is appearing as $69.98 (before shipping) on DS site.

  • Nice price, bought 2 from ebay DSE.

  • +1

Just checking whoever marked as expired, if you add to cart and checkout, the price will drop.

  • On the DSE site all power boards are back to regular price. They have not changed their Ebay store prices yet though so deal still active on Ebay.

    • +1

Hmmm I'm not allowed to change the deal to the eBay link, I guess a Mod would have to do this.

    • See my comment. Just bought for $20 and got free delivery too!

      • +1

You're right thanks, I updated the deal and unexpired it!

      • +1

Showing as $69.98 for me right up to the payment details stage of the checkout.

        • +2

          same here

  • Almost bought this but then saw it only has a 2000 joule rating….

  • Just bought one for $20.44 and got free shipping to VIC, so the deal is still ON!

    • Did you buy it from the site or ebay store?

      • Pogiguy - from the Dick Smith's site

  • +1

Is dick smith's board better than this?
    https://www.catchoftheday.com.au/event/39944/product/8-outle…

I am club catch member so I can get it for $19.99 and free delivery

    • Got one of these. Like the individual power switches, so far seems OK.

  • +1

    Thanks. Grabbed two, hopefully :|.

  • Found one in a DSE dumpster 8 years ago. still using it -actually this computer is plugged in to it.

    • +6

Why don't you post the details of the dumpster so others may benefit from it as well?

      • What the dumpster from 8 years ago?. How can you benefit from some thing which took place 8 years ago?.

      • pre-ozbargain days

  • lol they introduce free shipping but jack the price up to $69.98. Good one dickie.

At least it's still $20.44 + delivery on Dick Smith eBay

  • +1

Good deal. I use these boards all around the house vey impressed with the quality of them.

Some of the cheaper ones the internal connectors are not aligned properly so its difficult to put the plug in.

  • Showing as full price for me? even after checking out.

    edit: ordered on ebay

    • It's because Dick Smith jacked it up to full price on their main Dick Smith site. Yet they're still selling for $20.44 on their ebay store. Go figure.

  • Thanks OP and random people who helped.

Thanks, bought 2 from their eBay store for $45.83.

Been wanting to get some protection on the cheap :)

  • +3

Could anyone comment on how the TV coaxial cable works?

    • +1

I've tried the phone cable socket - without socket protection I could download at 1MB/Sec, with DSE surge protection in between, download went to 0.9mb/sec or 10% slower.
I'd imagine the TV Coax would be similar.. perhaps the signal strength would be impacted

      • Thanks!

  • Thanks OP! Been waiting for this deal to come back for a long time!

  • omg price revised soon as I was checking out on ebay!!!!

  • Dammit, was about to checkout 2, thought I would add one more, price has gone back up to $69.98

    • Yeah, ebay price gone back up. I missed out on this one.

      • it's sign god telling me not to spend more money!!!!

  • +1

I bought from eBay just after the website stopped stock.
I assume their sites stock levels and ebay stocks don't talk to each other. So ill wait for an email telling me to gtfo..

    • They didn't stop stock on the main web site, they just jacked the price to $69.98.

Any way i ordered from the ebay store very early on last night i believe i was order # 21. You'd think i'd have a good chance of getting it. Still waiting on any shipment advice.

      • Except for the tiny little problem that Dick Smith appears to process orders backwards, such that people who order last sometimes get their stock, whereas people ordering first don't. See Pioneer headphones. It's a lottery, really :)

        • It must be a last come first served basis.

  • same here i clicked on buy it now at $20 then on the paypal website it showed $69! do I get in trouble with ebay if I dont pay the $69? (which I really wont pay)….

    • no you might get an email in afew days which hassle u for money… just ignore

    • You'll be fine - buyers can get away with more than a hundred non-payments on eBay. Sellers do have the option to block users with a history of not paying, but that requires a minimum of two unpaid item strikes (and you wouldn't get one automatically, only if Dick Smith chooses to open an unpaid item case).

    • I think it says that "someone else can buy this item until you complete checkout", meaning you are not "committing to buy" until you pay. You should be fine.

    • thanks guys, i will ignore any emails from DS or ebay…annoying how quickly they raised the price as people started buying….need one for new PS3, (yes "new", I decided to buy old technology with cheap games instead of the PS4)…haha

  • Ah Fek back to full price

  • The sold at least 220 units on ebay since I got mine in the morning

  • I bought this and the black one in last years sales. I am pretty sure they were under $20 back then. Anyway, they seem to be good quality. Although I haven't had a surge to really test it.

    • -1

Try hooking it up to your wife and tell her you have just spent more money at Ozbargain. Report back once you have done that.

  • It is not safe enough. Each mains outlet should have an individual power switch.

  • Has any one's order from eBay been shipped?. Mine was paid on thursday but still waiting shipment. Was one of the very first orders so unless Dick Smith actually processes orders in backwards.

    • I bought it Thursday night and got a shipping notice today.

      • I ordered mine on thursday night too through their eBay store and so far no shipment email. But then again there's been times when orders show up on the courier even though there had been no shipment email advice.

  • Ordered mine on thursday night.
    Just received mine today.
Missing 1 surge interceptor out of 2.
Sighs.. Hope no one else are missing items from their order!!

    • I'm doing better than you. I ordered 1 surge protector and although got one from the courier on monday and now today i get an email saying one has been shipped out which has a different consignment number. I don't think Dick Smith knows what they're doing. Not bad 2 for the price of 1. Dick Smith had been dicking me around for over a week.

      • After 3 weeks and 2 emails, i finally got the second one. Online service is quite pathetic. Each email took 7 days for an automated/generic response from dick-ie.

  • Received mine today, ordered 2 received 2 :)

  • Mine turned up today.

  • Those that had them turned up today. Was it bought directly from the main Dick Smith website or through their eBay store?.
