does this have recipes or just restaurant reviews?

cheers OP. they usually have the "$10 with the sat newspaper" deals on release, but save having to buy the paper or go to the newsagent!

Is there an eBook version or an app instead? I don't like killing trees.

There used to be an iPhone app which was great, because one could spontaneously look for a good food restaurant nearby. Unfortunately, that was now been discontinued…

  • How does this compare to the free online review sites?

    • A different beast…they're complementary.

GFG is compiled by professional/"professional" food reviewers. It is a pretty good yearly snapshot of the dining scene, albeit viewed through a more fine dining lens (doesn't just cover fine dining though).

Most online review sites are user driven…more up to date and can be more responsive, but open to fake reviews (positive and negative), or even just reviews by people with no idea/taste! You need to read between the lines, and interpret each review more closely as to how much weight to give it.

at the end of the day, all reviews sources are subjective, and you'd want to use a combination of them (food guides, urbanspoon, blogs) to get a better idea.

overall though, yes i would probably trust the good food guide over a review site like urbanspoon/yelp. Although personally, i use the good food guide as the yardstick/calibration to help inform interpretation of urbanspoon/blogs (rather than holding it up as gospel).
