I'm not seeing a bargain here… Though admittedly the overall market seems to be inflated at the moment. But I wouldn't spare this a second glance unless it was at least $50 cheaper. Maybe I'm just spoiled from past bargains

Agree. Not a cheap rock bottom bargain, but as you say, prices seem to have gone up in the last 10 months. Partly with Aussy dollar going down, and also partly the competition from tablets. Notebook manufacturers together with Intel and AMD are putting lower end dual and quad core Atoms, Celerons, Pentiums, AMD E1/2 & A4/6 series in their under $500 to even $650 range, and saving their i3, i5 etc. for well over $500 or $600 mark. Also keep in mind that with the newer low voltage i3's and i5's ending with U, there is a performance drop too. Sure, there could be longer battery life ( if batteries had the same capacity ), but this is offset with smaller lighter ( also cheaper to make ) batteries, so we do not gain that much here. We end up getting thinner & lighter laptops/ultrabooks which are cheaper to make, as well as that is what consumers seem to want ( aided through advertising ), and hence competing with tablet market, as well as keeping their profit margins up.

The Acer you linked I should have grabbed myself at the time, but did not think laptops would increase in price like now. I can't help thinking that was an oversight at the time from Dick Smith, as they were experimenting with their on line marketing and discounting, or they did a deal with Acer directly for moving volume. MSY had a similar model, but was around $500 after casback, and now $679 after cashback, same i5 4200u, but now has touchscreen and hybrid ssd.

Very similar HP model for $609 several places: http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=F8Z13PA&spos=3

Can't see this specific Toshiba model at a better price anywhere… or any price anywhere else. It seems to be a DSE exclusive which big name shops arrange with OEMs to avoid potential price match situations.

    • It's on ebay for same price with 4.95 postage.

      • Yes, Dick Smith is selling it on Ebay. Why is this a reply to me?

          He thought you were lonely.

  • what sort of HD is this?
    HD or 'HD' ?

    probably some shitty 1366x768 res

    • +1

      It's literal HD.
HD =720p (actually, better than, at 768)
      HD+=900p
      FHD=1080p

at 15 inch or smaller, *x768 is pretty decent. I'd like HD+, but after using FHD on a laptop below 17", now know its a HUGE mistake IMO.

  • Bought a Dell i7 with 840M graphics for $690 from JB Hifi on the weekend, and could have got it for $549 from the Dell outlet store if father in law didn't mind a refurb. Visited Dick Smith, but their range was expensive compared with JB's 20% off prices, and their range was small.

I don't really see the prices of laptops going up as suggested above, if anything $400-500 and a bit of patience can get you a really solid office laptop, $650-$800 a good midrange gaming laptop.

    • What HAS died off is the range.

Find a gaming laptop for about $700, thats 14" or smaller.
They DO exist, but either cost a premium, or have a major shortcoming.

  • NO Deal…

This is 499 after Cashback, not same brand but better specs for cheaper > 750 GB HDD Vs 500 GB

PS: I bought the Acer and returned it because the trackpad was dead on arrival. but This is a better deal than the toshiba.
Also it has a full numberpad.

  • Haha, Dick currently dropped the price to a better $599. That's more like it.
