NOS Avanti Bicycle Frames from $39.95 @ AvantiPlus (Preston, VIC)

50

I have always wanted to build a bike from the ground up. I am also wanting a full suspension MTB for next summer and a flat bar road bike for commuting the bikepaths. These guys have New Old Stock Avanti bike frames from 2010 - 2012 going for crazy prices. I just bought an Avanti Torrent Full Suspension frame for about $70. Frames don't come with forks or rear shocks but I plan to put my OzB skills to the test buying cheap components over the coming months to build up the bike(s).

This is not for everyone, these are just bike frames, not full bikes but they have crazy priced deals to clear them out. Deals like carbon road frames for $200 and Alu 29er hardtails for $60. Size availability seems limited, I got the last Torrent in a Medium.

If there are any cyclists out there thinking about building up a bike, this looks like an awesome deal. Combine it with the Groupset offers from Ribble and you can probably make a sweet bike for cheap!

  • That's a lot of pain and stuffing about though!

If you've never had any experience with modern bikes, you can have your hands full just trying to adjust the gears and brakes, let alone installing them properly from scratch.

For the person very familiar with actually working on bikes (and not just riding them and making little adjustments on the fly to avoid bike shop repair fees), this looks like a good way to save money.

For everyone else, I strongly recommend getting a bike put together by a pro. Full warranty if something goes wrong with a component is nothing to be sneezed at when you are paying hundreds of dollars for some of those parts.

adjusting gears? haven't heard of di2?

    • Agree UFO building your own bike isn't for everyone in the same way that building your own computer or fixing up an old car or renovating an old house isn't for everyone. There are folks around though who want to pick an exact mix of components or they just want an excuse to mess around with cool bike bits.

As an OzB and a keen cyclist I see loads of bargains slipping through to the keeper on bike sites every day. I reckon I can make a project of this cherry picking the right bits over the next 6 months or so to build up a bike (or 2).

  • OP I suggest you join some of the buy/sell groups on FB and forums for sourcing parts. I've saved heaps in the past by slowly buying a bit here and there and building up bikes with good quality components for a fraction of the full price!
If you're keen to build it yourself then go for it, there is plenty of info on the net although your biggest issue will be having the right tools for the job i.e. headset or BB press which can quickly add to cost.

    • Already a member of the Melbourne one. I've been toying with this idea for a while and one suggestion I've read on the net is that is cheaper than buying the tools to get your LBS to fit the BB and Headset, might cost a little bit of labour but one poster said the LBS charged less than buying the tools!

      • If you post on that group often someone will help you out. I've borrowed tools in the past for a night and paid the owner back with a 6pack. You can also make a "ghetto" headset press pretty easily.

  • NOS Avanti Bicycle Frames from $39.95

are they discounted? how much are they normally?

    • I say they are significantly discounted - nicer frames that would cost $300-500 are seling for $99.95

    • I cant find anywhere selling these exact frames for a comparison and many of the framesets are superseded models so may not be available anyway. What I do know is that I have been looking for a Full Suspension MTB frame for 5 or 6 months and often good 3 - 10 YO 2nd hand frames go for $400 - $700 ish on Fleabay and Gumtree etc. The Brand New Avanti Torrent MTB Frame frame I bought here cost me about $70.

Carbon Road Frames can cost anywhere from around $1K to $10K+. Chinese 'no-name' knockoff carbon frames on eBay (Chinarellos) seem to go for around $600+ so an Avanti frame for $200 seems like a good deal. I am no carbon fibre expert to evaluate the different weaves etc but $200 for a brand new name brand carbon frame is the best I have ever seen.

      • And honestly, the ergonomics/frame technology hasn't changed much over the years.

The difference between a 2012 carbon MTB frame and a 2014 frame might simply be changing an angle a degree or two either to continue holding a patent or for slight differences in stress points.

I'm looking at some of their carbon frames…pity about Avanti paint schemes though.

  • Anyone considering buying one of the full suspension frames be aware that the rear shocks used on these are not particularly common sizes, meaning it could be hard to get good deals on appropriate shocks. Also be aware that obtaining the right bushings to fit a third party shock to a frame can be difficult (e.g. for my custom build I had to import custom bushings from Poland)
