Tivo HD Twin Tuner PVR 160gb - $599 @ Dick Smith

150

Tivo is usually $699 but Dick Smith Catalogue page 23 has it at $599 as a hot deal.

Some stores will negotiate on Tivo (JB HiFi), others won't. Typically a good deal available most places that will negotiate is the Tivo + wireless adaptor for $630-$650.

Some people have done better in clearance sales etc but $599 marked price is good….

Sale starts 12 August and ends 31 August

  • Tivo has been getting incredibly poor reviews. It's not like what the americans have

I agree that some people hate Tivo. In particular the 160gb capacity is far less than ideal, and also the requirement to have internet access to use it. And it doesn't have anywhere near the functionality that the US version does.

Having said that, I bought one for my wife and one for my mum/dad. They all love it. It is EXTREMELY easy to use and just works. Plus you don't have to pay for an EPG like you have to with say a Topfield PVR.

Anyway I don't want to start a flame war so I'll leave it to each individual to decide what suits them. All I know is that this is the best advertised price from a national retailer that I have ever seen.

Besides the bad choice of only a 160gb hard drive as standard, the TiVo interface and guide data outshines everything else for ease of use as far as I am concerned. Very wife friendly, which is worth a lot in my book.

Add your own 1TB drive for $100 and you won't regret it.

I got mine a while back for $599 including the wireless adapter from Dick Smith.

    • How did you add a hard drive for $100? I thought you couldn't use any hard drive other than the Tivo branded ones for $299.00

TIVO rocks! It's better than the US one. The hard drive surely isn't large enough, that is for sure, but the purchase price includes lifetime updates, lifetime EPG, lifetime seasons passes, etc. They pay a monthly fee in the US. We don't. It is the best PVR available in OZ. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

  • do a search, you can upgrade the internal drive with one of your own flavour.

Good list price so I'll give it a +'ve

FYI, there's a thread on the whirlpool forum discussing the cheapest price paid for a TiVo. I got mine for $490 at DJ's by matching a receipt that's on that thread, however it seems not all DJ's will do it (probably depends on the staff member you get).

  • We just bought one from JB's over the weekend for $600 and we absolutely LOVE it! No more ads, plus you can record and watch your fav shows in your own time. Well worth the money I think!

  • Hipsi you did super well getting DJ's to price match. That receipt is a few months old and that retailer at that location no longer sells it.

I've had no luck with that receipt unfortunately.
