Seems like a good price. But I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy without getting a review of the product (especially when SS are having a sale on the Samsung Evos)

    • +1

especially when SS are having a sale on the Samsung

Samsung deal has finished. No free shipping.

This deal is cheaper and finishes on Tue… plus you get the enclosure.

  • thanks

  • I wouldn't mind a main drive with 256gbs instead of the 120 I got now (which is always full)

Just dont know anything about this SSD. Its a lot of work to reinstall everything :/

    • +3

Why to install back? Clone it

    • +1

If changing the drive over you don't need to reinstall everything, you can clone your current drive onto the new one.
All you'd need is a USB sata cable such as this one from eBay for $5.75 and software such as MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition(free for home use).

      • +3

No need to get cable, as for one extra $ this drive comes with a HHD case and usb cable. Put it in there and connect, done easy.

      • Cheers for that :)

    • similar question here.
How to know if this SSD can replace my notebook hard drive?
Don't think my notebook can use two hard drives as I only got one hard drive space?
So I guess if I would want to use SSD, i will need to replace it with my old harddisk?

      • +1

What model is it? You can usually look up whether the HDD is a standard size and if so a SSD would fit.

A lot of people replace the DVD drive with a secondary HDD/SSD. So you can put SSD in main slot, and then move HDD to DVD drive slot.

        • +1

One will need a tray with Sata hdd converter, it would cost up to 25 on ebay shipped depend on type of thickness and odd port standard (IDE / Sata)
Also, some AMD based notebooks does not support hdd plug into odd drive, most intel systems work fine.
If DVD drive still required, a external case would also cost 30 to 40 shipped

It just writes there 320 GB 5400 rpm, but i think it should be standard notebook 2.5''

I would very much want to abandon my DVD drive if I could!
Not sure any converters do I need to get to get this works?

        • +1

I looked at your spec list from link above, and see nothing unusual there, so any regular 2.5" sata hhd should fit. The main difference with laptops is the version ( speed ) of the sata connection, and if it's sata or msata ( different physical size ). The msata is mainly included in computers as a secondary hhd. There is a difference in thickness of the hhd, but you should be fine as this Transend is only 7mm and will fit even newer thin ultrabooks. My advice to you would be to first clone your O/S from your old hhd by inserting the ssd into the bonus ( $1 extra ) usb 3 enclosure/cable and included free cloning software. That should be easy to do as long as the hhd is easy to access. For a lot of people having 40 to 80GB free space ( after O/S ) is plenty on a laptop, if not get the larger 256GB ssd. Just get in the habit of moving/backing up large files to an external. If having only 50-60GB free space ( for the 128GB ssd ) is not enough for you, you can always look into the second option with the DVD tray Sata converter. There are pros and cons for both. I personally like only having one ssd as an only hhd because lower power use, ease of use, speed, shock proof for a mobile laptop that get's moved around. Give it a go, easier than you think, and you won't look back.

        • @ozhunter68:

          Thanks for your inputs.
I would like to use my old hdd as well, cause 120GB would not be enough for me.
          that would mean that:

          i) SSD goes into my current HDD place
ii) my old HDD will go into DVD

For (i), do I have to get any converter to install the SSD?
For (ii), I will need to get a DVD to sata converter?

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-Macbook-Pro-Unibody-Caddy-O…
These are examples of the commo 9.5 mm 2.5 inch type drives tray (converter)
It may limit your hard drive transfer speed to Sata one 150 mb range, depend on motherboard chipset. But it 5400 rm hard drive can barely get to that speed.

I got a 250 evo in primary hdd bay and 1tb 5400 at the odd bay.

          @jackau:

          Thanks jackau.
          I got it now.

          i) If I just use SSD to replace my old hdd and retain the ODD, then I just buy from OP is enough.
ii) If I want both hard drives, then I need to get something as you mentioned.

        • +1

          @chonghe:
yes, if you want to use both hard drive, you can effectively put away the ODD into those external kits you can find on evil bay.
Who use ODDs? Even i only use it for Blur-Ray :p

  • Logitech H130 is cheaper at $4 last sale

  • They have quite a few ssd for $139-$145.
How do you add the enclosure for $1, comes up $19 and I don't see a code.

    • +1

      Available Instore only

      On the advert.

    • called them
you can just pop up the store and add 1 dollar on top of your purchase to get it

  • OK deal but I can/will wait for some user reviews/feedback.

  • +2

Even instore they dont know about the deal yet lol but it comes up on their computer so all good.

Now to clone my c: drive….

the ssd also includes a 3.5 bracket too, so is a really good buy with the HD Enclosure.

Ah thats funny, Transcend actually provide a system clone for you :D

  • Seems like the going rate for ssd gas dropped considerably since I bought my 256gb crucial 2 years ago, night be time for another.

Kogan has joined the game too, 256gb (self branded but intel based) for $139 free shipping:

    https://m.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-256gb-6gbs-solid-state-driv…

    • On the Kogan ssd, looks ok but is 10mm thick ( too thick for some slim laptops or ultrabooks ), and only 12 months Kogan warranty.

      • +1

Yeah 1 year warranty might not be what a lot of people would like, I've been lucky in a way in that any drives I've had fail were at least 5-6 years old.

A 5 year warranty can be added for an extra $20 it seems, and any warranty claims through them they pay for return postage which is good. Just had a panel heater from them fail just short of the 1 year warranty and they sent out an Australia post return mail slip.

  • Well clone ssd Scope from Transcend worked well and Im using the 256ssd as we write should be better than my old OCZ agility 128gb ssd that was only half the speed of the transcend.

My only problem now is the other SSDs I have are too thick to fit in the Enclosure :/ bugger (unless I remove the foam pad inside it, or take the cover of the SSD)

    • I would remove the foam ( mainly needed for older spinning hhd ), just insert some thin cardboard or paper.

      • +1

Got it in, nice and snug… with the foam still in :)

  • +1

I'm not sure if I'll get this.

ButAFA no reviews go I wouldn't worry. Transcend is a name brand specialising in storage so their whole company's reputation s at stake. I've had good luck with their other flash storage products. I can't imagine that they'd put out anything other than high quality SSDs. And if there ever was a problem I'm sure they'd honour their warranty and/or be quick to put out a firmware patch or whatever's needed.

  • +1

Ssd for 512 /480 gb should reach the 250 aud mark by end of this year, provided gfc mark 2 hasn't set in for all of us and world war 3 not on…

  • So this is instore only?

    • +1

Yes, unless you went in store and they were put of stock, in which case if you paid for it there and then they will send it to you free as soon as they get more stock.

  • -1

Can the enclosure be used for zee hard disk

    • +1

You mean, for the old removed hhd. As long as it's not too thick, yes. You might need to remove some foam as stated by AMLagonda if it is tight fit.

      • Yep. That's what I meant.
        Thanks!

        • Er Im not sure on a hd… I had a SSD I was trying to put in it, just that the Transcend is a lot thinner :) the 2.5 HD I have looks the same thickness as my old SSD but its 1mm longer

        • +1

          @AMLagonda:

          but its 1mm longer

a bit of sandpaper can fix that…

        • Hahah, your humour is a bit hit or miss to me ( maybe your actually sometimes being serious ), but then other times such as this joke, you really crack me up. Keep it up :-)

  • +3

    Was down there earlier today…

    Enclosure is now FREE !!!

    • +1

      Which store/branch? All of them?

      • I was at Mitcham

    • Save $1 , that should go towards the $20 in fuel that's needed for me to drive 120 Klm ( return journey ) to my closest MSY. as I want it NOW. On a more serious note, these are really good quality drives, has software to clone and firmware updates/tuning/monitoring, and also has SATA Device Sleep Mode (DevSleep), which I am hoping will extend battery life when older non Ultrabooks ( most Ultra's have this feature built in as well as Asus's second gen Super Hybrid Engine's 2 second instant on )go into sleep or hibernate mode, as well as supposedly re-start quicker. The performance speeds seem good also if using Sata 3 connection like all newer ssd.

  • +1

    Got one of it.
No free enclosure here, Kingsford NSW.

    • +1

      No free enclosure here,

You need to ask for it, or they don't give you one…

  • You would not believe it. Well, with MSY's dodgy computer stocktake system anything is possible. I checked stock online first, ( no point calling as most of the time no answer ) the 256GB which I wanted said low stock and the 128GB in stock this afternoon before setting of for a leisurely drive +-138 Klm. return. Turned up, both out of stock. Oh well, back to my trusty Samsung 840 this time the 120GB Evo version because the 250GB is still above my $140 cap. In all fairness to MSY, I check tonight and now correct, they must do an update at end of day, or because I told the staff member and he corrected. Not to worry, I am used to the Samsung cloning software, and am surprised how much faster the Evo writes data cloning over compared to the older 840 120GB model. No free case for me :-)

    • MSY service/attitude sucks.

not sure the definition of fast?
Yesterday I clone from my HDD to SDD using usb cable (my notebook is usb 2.0)
48GB of data (OS only) took 75 minutes.
      workout out only 10+MB/s
      is this very slow?

      • +1

Over USB 2.0 interface, of course it will be slow.

        • Yeah, exactly. Wait till you get it in your sata 2 or 3.
