That's true but not everyone enjoys wearing headphones and these can be used as a budget surround system for a small living room. You'd be surprised how hard these go for a lower end surround system.

      • Well it's a case of each to their own.

Just if you are going to spend that much money on speakers I was giving an alternative. If you are going to have an awesome sound system better to do it in a common area.

    • yeah headphones are just as good as 5.1 speakers when someone is sneaking up behind you in CSS, not.

MSY price on these normally is $309, and even then they are the cheapest on static ice.

Tempting to upgrade to these at this price.

Well… Headphones are better imo for CS- I play GO, not sure why you are still on CSS, the competitive community has moved onto GO, but that's a discussion for another time. A $200 pair of headphones are always going to be better than a $200 set of speakers for Counter-Strike. End of story. Sorry.

          These are $600 speakers.

With 5.1 you have five physical sound sources. With headphones you generally have two. It's doesn’t matter how POV your 5.1 system is, as long as it's loud enough to hear footsteps it's going to be more useful for competitive FPS's most headphones (excluding proper 5.1 headphones)

      • You have never used a decent set of headphones then. Virtual surround done by a decent mixamp like an astone and noone is going to be sneaking up on you. in fact most competitive play in FPS they have to wear headphones anyway for the tournaments.

My point is more about lifestyles. You want to spend money on a decent sound system I was advising to do it in a common area. Just for a pc used by one person why does the rest of the world need to hear it.

    • My $50 logitech x540s are 100x better in soundstaging than my beyer T1 for gaming. Headphones will never be better unless it uses proper binaural processing with the game.

    • I half agree with what you are saying except instead of headphones I say get a good 2.1 or 2.0 speaker system, if you are spending $270 on 6 speakers you are getting 6 $45 speakers, if you buy 2.0 you are getting 2 $135 speakers and more for your money. This really only applies if you don't plan on using this system as a proper surround setup or if you don't really need the surround, on to your point of headphones despite what the others in the thread say there are headphone specific sound settings in games these days (including cs, a requirement due to the competitive scene requiring headphones) which are just as good at positioning as surround sound. In my opinion 5.1 is really only useful if you plan on watching movies when it can be fantastic.

      • Yep which is why I don't really recommend getting an awesome sound system for a computer.

  • i always wanted them
ended up buying Bose Companion 5 from MSY for $399 a few years back

    • Stick with the Companion 5 unless you want some muddy doof doof. I've owned both for many years and the companion is just better in every aspect. And if you want doof doof these aren't that great too, Z5500s or the super old z680s are alot better.

Anyhow, it's still a great price for semi decent sounding 5.1 system.

IMHO: Better to wait for a proper entry level 5.1 home theatre set like the 600w pioneer systems that always go on sale a couple times a year. Yes granted there's more stuff and is a bit big, but it's a better investment than these. Because at least when you feel like upgrading the speakers, you can. With the Logitech setup you're stuck with it

    6 months ago a pioneer htp072 was 249

True, but good speakers aren't cheap and a good subby will cost more than your amp.

For the extra $20 you get the full shabang here with a balanced set of speakers.

Also if you already have an amp setup in your lounge then these are PERFECT for the den/man cave/garage

  • How do these compare to my existing Logitech Z5500s?

    • +3

They're smaller, cheaper and sound worse. Inferior in almost every way.

      • Bit of an oversimplification there fella.

The link shn posted above is about as comprehensive of a comparison as you'll find. A complete dissection of the internals of both systems.

The Z5500 is unquestionably of a higher build-quality because it comes from Logitech's pre-rampant-cost-cutting era and louder by virtue of it's larger 10" woofer; but beyond that they're really as near as makes no difference (as you'll see in the link the satellites have not changed between the models; what has is the subwoofer, amp and internal circuitry and given that the satellites having no tweeters, rely on the one driver to produce the entire frequency range, that still makes them rather bad for music as the highs & mids just aren't there).

I have the Z906s currently and did used to have Z5500s.

    • The z5500's bass booms like a car subwoofer, the z906's sounds a little clearer but looses some of the low down rumble.

They use different amps so they sound a little different.

Honestly, if you want better sound than your z5500's your looking at a system worth $1000-$1500 before bargins.

    • I sold my z5500 for $230 on Gumtree about 3 months ago.
Far better speakers as my brother has the z906.

I replaced the z5500 with the Bose Cinemate GS Series II for a more minimalistic look and less cables. I am surprised at the sound reproduction of Cinemate. Crisp and balanced sound and a bargain for $495!

      • That's a bargain at $495! I am also considering Companion 5, any thoughts?

  • last time dse deal :$265 delivered

These are decent speakers for the price, yes the z5500's sounded a little better but this has better output options.

Also I remembered something along the lines of the newer model taking much less power on standby.

At mid volume they sound the same and i guarantee you wont be turning these up full blast very often unless you want some very angry neighbors.
