Mens haircut prices in comparison to female haircut prices

Before everyone get's upset and tells me that the reason for the price difference is because of hair length…I get that.

What I wanted to know was what happens if you already have short hair? For example, I'm female, I have really short hair. So it grows back quickly, and I need to get it cut often. I don't have much money so even going to Just Cuts at $29 is expensive. In my area, there are some places that advertise $8 haircuts for students/seniors/children. $10 for everyone else.

That seemed reasonable. All I was getting was my sides on my hair trimmed and a bit off the top. So I sit down, and the dude cuts my hair. It took about 15 minutes. At the end he demands $18. I said that the sign outside says $8 for students and I show him my valid student card. He said that its $15-$18 for females, even if they are students. I told him that my hair was incredibly short, and he used the same techniques he would use for a mans short hair.

In the end I left $15 and walked out.

This has happened to me twice in two different places. Do you agree on a price with your hairdresser beforehand? Even if it's just at one of these local in-and-out barber type places?

i'm a man with medium length hair and i pay $30 at hairhouse warehouse cause there is nothing else nearby

  • +1

It;s not only hair length issue, but also technique involved and amount of product used on your hair before and after cutting.

Don't they display the prices between men and women ?

  • Yes no matter how much the feminist's scream equality, James Brown couldn't have sung it better when he exclaimed "it's a man's world".

Except we pay more for insurance, in divorce, are disadvantaged by women-only scholarships at uni, we pay for movies and dinner - and those are just some of the ways we are screwed financially in this 'man's world'.

How the law is against is a different matter altogether.

Anyway OP just ask for a men's haircut from the hairdresser. They'll be confused but I'm sure they'll do it.

  • +20

It sure sounds a rip off in your case. Best to ask before the cut next time.

  • +1

Notoriously fraught and dodge-ridden area for women (along with the buying of certain types of very basic clothing too, I gather) but I think for your specific hair situation, if it really doesn't require any more than a basic men's cut, you really will need to argue the point - and the price - beforehand, and do that with someone willing to accommodate you. Be firm. You'll find somebody.

  • The two places I did go to, I chose because they look like they only cut mens hair, which is how my hair is cut. Also because the price they had listed was cheap. They didn't have a price for women. So I assumed the student price applied for both males and female.

I didn't use any product, or get my hair washed by them. I honestly just wanted a no frills cut. It is literally just shaved on the sides, and cleaned up around the edges. My partner has cut my hair before, but obviously isn't a professional so i wanted to get it done neatly.

I just want to know why they would price to me specifically, differently, as I was having the same haircut as other people in the shop.

    • +3

For equivalent cuts without 'styling' or product, you're just up against the 'being a girl' taxx.
A bit like the Apple / Microsoft / just-about-everything 'Australia Tax', but xx-chromosome-specific…

      • +4

It just sucks. I wish I could find somewhere that was priced the same for both genders if they just specialise in short hair.

Trust me, I wish I had $29 every 3 weeks to get my hair cut.

        • +7

Tell a barber, “Give me the exact same haircut you would give a man in my position,” you should be charged the same price as a man.

Anyway I reckon head out to the Asian suburbs like Eastwood, there is a vietnamese hairdresser in the shopping centre whose rates are fairly cheap. Very friendly too.

        • I am not sure why you have to go every 3 weeks though?

even if your hair grows so fast, it probably only grows about one inch a month.

stretch your dollar, have ur hair cut every 6-8 weeks instead

        • @juventino: It's actually about half an inch per month :) I haven't had my hair cut in… crap, like over a year now I think.

Probably explains why I look like Cousin Itt with an outdated, unintentional belayage.

        • +1

@juventino: If you have short hair, like a no.1 sides and back, you will need it cut every 3 weeks.

        • @nicksinternet:

This. I have my hair cut to either a 2 or a 1 on the sides and back. It grows back very very very quickly.

    • -1

Contract law is violated when they gave you a new price which wasn't in their invitation to treat. Invitations to treat may be legally binding, as in Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Company [1892].

      • This doesn't really fall under invitation to treat since the service has already been provided before the dispute - which basically puts the ball in OPs court as to whether or not she actually has a debt of $x to the hairdresser. She could pay the student price, walk out, and the hairdresser would have to be able to prove they had adequately visible information (reasonable person would interpret etc etc) regarding male vs female price differences.

      • +3

Lol Smoke Ball - the most commonly cited case by people who have no idea what they are talking about.

        • I have studied business law at university. It's the best case regarding the enforcement of a legally binding Offer.

        • +6

          @Fobsessive:

can you help me with an upcoming case? I found a snail in a bottle.

      • +6

This is price discrimination we're talking about here. Price discrimination is not always illegal.

If you think about how cinemas charge different rates for kids, students, and adults. The reason they do so is to take into account the different income levels of people of various ages. Obviously, adults will get charged more.

The same applies for transport, amusement rides, and many other types of services. Insurance also takes into account your age, gender, health and all sorts of other hidden variables and adjusts the prices accordingly.

The pricing of women's haircuts varies because it's generally known that women's haircuts are more complex, require a longer time and a different set of skills to cut, and women don't visit the hair salon very often as they will grow their hair much longer than men.

Men on the other hand will visit more frequently than women, so statistically men account should account for a larger sales volume than women, and on average, the cost per unit is also lower (variables like duration of the service, hair products needed, skills) hence the cheaper pricing.

The OP's beef with the barber is that he basically gave a woman a men's cut and proceeded to charge her the higher price. Is this illegal…. hard to say, it's a gray area and also a fairly recent debate in the news. Hairstylists of course, would prefer that men should pay just as much as women do..

So my advice — bargain the price first before you sit down to take the cut. If the barber says no, just walk out…

      • +3

        Ozbargain legal advice…sounds legit

      • -1

        Noob.

  • +3

Perhaps to avoid problems, ask for prices beforehand?

    • +2

After those two times, I always ask now. i always get quoted more than what it lists for the male price. Always the minimum female price.

I don't think there is anyway around it for me. I found that link on ozbargain for the free haircut, so I'm going to go with that for this time.

      • +10

Maybe next time pretend to be a man? Dress like a guy, act like a guy and talk like a guy.

  • +2

I would just keep letting your partner cut it if money is an issue. It didn't take me too many tries to get good at cutting my own hair

    • +2

That's what I've been doing so far. If there is a special occasion, then I'll go get it cut properly. I do want to invest in some good clippers.

      • +3

Would probably be a worthwhile investment for the long run

      • Do yourself a favour and get some Wahl's (get the higher end ones, I think they're still made in the US). Even if it means you can keep the back/sides short in between cuts, it'll save you money. I put it off for a while, and ended up getting a pair (for 3-4 all over) and I can give myself a better cut than most hairdressers will. No more long hairs here and there poking out.

  • -1

$10 (mens/womens/children) cuts is the trends in perth now.

  • +3

My wife cuts my hair for nothing.
Everyone paying for haircuts is a sucker!
    ;-)

    • +1

Seriously though it is illegal in Australia to discriminate against someone in the provision of services on the basis of gender.
If the service is truly identical (and I am no hairdresser but I don't see how a man's haircut is different from a woman's assuming similar hair length and style) then it is probably a breach of the anti-discrimination laws.

    • +5

Yes but you have to take out the clippers, oil the blades, clean out your pubes/hair, put on your art smock, sweep and clean up after you're done and give yourself a pat on a back for your frugal heroism.

Brace yourself for impact here comes a OzBargain Bombshell….

I get my hair cut for only $8 in Asian Dominated Suburbs, I walk in early and avoid the queue, I don't have to engage in chit chat as most can't speak English, I don't have to clean up and I'm gone in 10 minutes.

This cannot be beaten and is unheard of happening in this ripp off nation in 2014!

      • +7

I love Asian hairdressers for the simple fact I hate having to awkwardly chit chat with hairdressers elsewhere.

        • +1

lol +1 when language barriers come in handy!

    • +1

My wife makes me cut her hair. She has long hair and all I have to do is cut it straight across a few inches from the bottom. Takes 5 minutes. If she went to a hairdresser they'd probably want something like $50 to do the same.

The long hair argument is bogus. I think it is harder to cut short hair because if you make a mistake you don't much left to work with.

      • I had a hairdresser go to cut the back of my hair with clippers, and the plate to step up the size fell off just as she started to cut so it took a huge chunk out. She tried to fix it, but couldn't, so a number 4 became a number 1. Worked out OK in the long run, got two hair cuts for the price of one. Didn't have to pay, plus it took twice as long to grow back.

  • I think there may be a cheap haircut place underneath Central Station in Sydney. Maybe around $10-$15 price range, but it's been a while since I've been there.

    • Two separate barbers across George st from the Capital Theatre in Haymarket both do $10 cuts for men, $8 student/pensioner. One of them does women too, but I don't know if it is extra.

      • One of the places I went to was on George st in the city.

  • You just have to find a good, cheap hairdresser that still only charges $10-15 for any female cut. lol

I've usually long mid to long hair. Always go to Asian hairdressers in the suburbs. It's been hit and miss, but I don't really care with my hair.. I'm willing to take the risk of a dodgier cut just to find the best cheap hairdresser to stick with, which I have (for my hair anyway). I pay $11 for a trim/layering for my mid/long hair at this place in Blacktown. The woman hardly speaks English but the salon owner has better English skills and translates anything over.

Still, the actual woman who does my hair with the poor English still seems to get what I want right with my gestures/instructions. She's cuts it really well.

Not even sure how much they charge for men's hair. Possibly $7, iirc. I understand your pain and the clear logic behind expecting a 'men's cut' price since you have male-short hair, so I dunno… either keep searching for a hairdresser that also assumes that same logic and stick with them, or if that's impossible, find a decent cheap salon with low prices for all female hair?

Hard to know just what your hair is like based on written descriptions, but super short womens cuts are more often than not more stylish / needing more attention to detail than a simple bloke's cut. So I can also understand that POV, depending on how much your hairstyle really is like a 'men's cut'.

  • +1

Get a cutting kit and buzz it yourself down to Number 1 weekly. Paying for a hair cut is retarded.

    • +5

Oh, that's the reason why I only see intellectually disabled people getting haircuts and all the ignorant and disgusting mouthed people getting around with home jobs.

  • Can you just tell them you're a man? Plenty of men choose to look like women and they can't really ask you to prove your gender.

    • +20

My boobs are too big :(

      • +13

I've seen loads of men with bigger boobs than mine…

        • +2

now the question is if a guy pretend to be a women, will they got charge female prices and contest it later?

      • women problems :(

  • +3

    $6 haircuts in Hurstville :)

    • I thought they were $5! (and $8 for women) This is the 888 place I'm thinking of, right?

  • +1

For the typical trim/haircut, I was once told that men generally get their hair cuts more often than women and hence the cheaper prices, whereas, girls can go months without a haircut. So they charge women more to make up for the the lesser number of times that they return.

For example (I'm just making up these figures!):
    Each year, a guy might show up once each month - 12 x $15 = $180
    And a girl might show up once every two months - 6 x $30 = $180

Apparently that's the logic - I don't know how true it is, but I personally think makes sense from a business perspective - each customer brings in a similar amount of income each year.

    • Doesn't make any sense. People should be charged by the labour involved, not by assuming how much income they will bring in

  • +1

"It took about 15 minutes … I said that the sign outside says $8 for students .. In the end I left $15 and walked out."

$32/hour is pretty low. he'd probably be on less than minimum wage after overheads and billable hours were accounted for.

people paying $8 for a haircut in an "asian suburb" by someone who can't speak english are just exploiting the weak.

    • +3

The way I see it , its not exploitation if both parties are happy with the deal.
You can always tip - which is what I do every time I visit my "asian" hairdresser. Since they've known that I tipped generously, they always gave me longer head job ( wash + massage ) and waiting time is almost none.

      • +15

I tipped generously for my massage in vietnam… I too got a longer head job.

      • +1

Did you say head job on purpose? No way I'd think of any other meaning but the sexual one.

        Facials on the other hand…

  • Same same but different - I stopped going to my local hairdresser after I found out that my wifey was paying the same as me (29$)for her longer hair and styling. Also the lovely hairdresser spent 45 Min on her and my haircut is 10 mins max. So I thought it was unfair but did not confront her because my wifey would have a problem if her haircut was more than 29$ !! So same old and out of respect I started at another place where for 30$ a drink is offered (Beer). Happy ending

    • +18

For $30 you get haircut, beer and happy ending?

Where is this heaven you speak of?!?

      • +1

Haircut/beer at the barber shop and happy ending @ home LOL

        • Married- no more happy endings at home! haha

  • I pay $40 for wash/cut/dry and style from my local.

For me it's harder to find a place where you can be happy with the result. So I'd rather pay extra.

I've tried many places ranging from $10 - $60 and results all vary.

  • I relate with this post so much. Though I never seem to mind to pay a little extra when they get it right.

  • +1

In fact, basic female haircut is even simpler than male's (5 minute work). OP if you are close to my place I may be able to cut for you free.

    • +2

Not sure if your offer is very generous or a bit creepy lol

  • +2

Should be asking why I can't get 'ladies' prices for clubs as a man. Everyone enjoys the same music, same rave, same alcohol and same lack of standing space.

    • In the clubbing context, cover is paid at the door before entry.

In this hairdresser case, she saw the advertised price, asked for a cut, and then was charged more than the advertised price. If I were her, I would definitely not pay more than that price.

On a kind of similar note, I once went to a pub for a meal because the sign said "Get a <main/food/specific dish> (i can't remember details) , for $<x> when you purchase a drink".

After making the order and purchasing a drink, my partner and I sat down. 40 min later meals still had not arrived. I went to the bar to check. Bar girl went to check and said they are coming soon. 10 min later I checked again, and she then admitted the orders were lost. We were seeing a friend's band play in 20 min so would not be able to eat if they made it now, so I demanded an entire refund (including drinks). She protested and said but you got your drinks.
I said if it were not for the meal+drink offer, I would not have ordered your drinks, you've delayed us to the point we're about to miss our friend's band play. After some back and forth we got a full refund.

In this hairdresser case, she entered because she saw that advertised price. If there was separate pricing for girls, she may not have even bothered.

This may not be solid in terms of law, but in terms of my logic, I would not have accepted the unexpected price difference.

      • +2

You are right, I went in because of the advertised price, and thought I would get that price. The sign said $8 for Students/Seniors/Pensioners. $10 adults.

It didn't say "mens" or "womens" prices. But its a barber, so they mainly get male customers. I have a valid student card, so why wouldn't I be considered a student?

I went in because of the price. Even if I had to pay $10, fine, that's the adult price, whatever. But he wanted to charge me $15-$18 just because I was female.

That's what I'm really annoyed about. He could have told me before hand. I know now I should have asked beforehand, (I always do now). If I was getting an elaborate cut with a lot of styling, then I would understand the price hike.

  • I'm a guy I get my hair cut about 4 times a year for $25 a pop ($20 for cut, $5 for wash). So $18 sounds pretty reasonable to me. But yeah, definitely confirm a price before someone provides you a service.

    • What's the point of having signs when the customer has to double check everything. I think it's morally wrong.

I realise your advice is for the sake of the customer, but in principal I disagree.

If the seller doesn't clarify the price before he/she commences work, I'm taking it as what's on the sign.

    1) Haircutting Comb/Guide http://www.combpal.com/

    2) the ubiquitous Made in USA Wahl Clippers (have not used, cannot verify usefulness)

    3) By far the most useful (in fact, it's all I use now for the job), Razor Combs - they hide a multitude of sins/mistakes and offer much better range of 'shaping' your hair (albeit at a much slower pace).

Am deciding whether to get this: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=SELFCUT+MIRROR&rlz=1C1NOO…. Last I checked (2012), about $100 delivered to Australia - which kinda defeats the purpose (especially in your case :-(), similar to Clei Multifunctional Furniture.

Agreed, women get free entry/free drinks at bar/clubs.. and get walked in more often than not with just a flirt.

    • that's how clubs operate… i'm sure you won't go to clubs where you bump into guys everywhere you turn, would you?

  • He said that its $15-$18 for females, even if they are students.

Was there a sign prominently stating this fact…if yes, was it as prominent as the one offering the $8 cut?

    • +1

There was no sign for female pricing. Just a student/pensioner/senior price ($8). And a price for adults ($10).

      • That's really poor form, I really hate retail douchebaggery like that, I feel for you. :'(

I wish I'd been in the vicinity…you'd have paid $8, end of story! ;)

        • Many barber shops do not expect female customers and therefore don't bother putting up a sign. Maybe they will get the occasional customer like 1 a week.

        • @scrimshaw:
I fail to see why that should be either relevant, or even the customer's problem.

  • +1

    Male here:

I've been cutting my own hair for years with an electric trimmer which I bought (in true OzBargain spirit) on special for $15 from Woolworths. I figured that if it didn't work, I could just wait until it grew back.

Amazingly, far from being a disaster, I actually receive compliments, and people ask who my hairdresser is!

Truth to tell, for me it's not about saving money rather than saving the time and tedium in going to a hairdresser and waiting in the queue. Five minutes in front of the bathroom mirror and I'm done.

    • +1

I dont understand you would clean the edges at the back of your head? Can't describe this properly but you know the two lines of hair along the edge of your neck at the back. How do you neaten that up lol.

      • At first with a partner assisting, after a few cuts you get used to it, also the line/height grows out real quick anyway. After a few years you'll be a pro!

  • +1

btw…go to the hair dressing school, they tend to charge very cheap and in some cases free. I don't think they will screw it up if it is just a simple one

  • Any blokes here have long hair? Like Dave Grohl long?

How do hairdressers charge you? As a man's cut or women's?

That'd be an interesting comparison for the OPs situation…

    • I've grown my hair to an approximately shoulder lenght.

Went to a Korean hairdresser, was charged normal man's rate.

I guess they are used to men having long hair…so no fuss.

      Colouring on the other hand….

  • I do agree with my hairdresser beforehand when making the appointment because I got the same kerfuffle you did. Some places reckon a trim is no more than an inch off your ends, any more taken off is a style cut which is waaay more expensive. I was a teenager then so my mother very sternly refused to pay the style cut price and we got away with that. Another place I went to had specials on Mon and Thurs but I wasn't sure if it was only a promo because they first opened so I used to check when making appointments. The place I go to now is a guy who works from home and charges ladies cuts about $30-$40 but when he saw my hair he said next time I had to pay more because I have a lot of hair (thick and coarse), but he does a much much better job (style doesn't grow out) than other hairdressers I've been to in Australia so I'm happy to pay him. To be fair I try to go about 6 months before cutting my hair because hair cut prices are expensive.
