Why do people use OzBargain?

Hi All,

I am just curious about why people use this website. I personally think it is great; on it at least twice a day.

But I am just wondering why other people use it and go to the effort of posting sometimes the most frivolous discounts (eg: 10c off a bottle of Coke).

What drives you to find these deals and post about it?

Thanks,

T

I'm surprised no one has mentioned BRODEN ? He's my idol, my number one motivation to be on this site ;)

i like commenting on stuff and then going to my account comments and refreshing every 4 seconds to see if there are any new posts/replies. if there are no new posts i like to then go back to the original thread and see if anyone has liked my comment. sometimes someone negs my comment and i get sad. but then i try and guess who negged me and neg their next comment. if i'm off work and have no plans this can be repeated all day long. sometimes i'll look for a good ozbargain deal on a bottle of scotch and go to my nearest appropriate bottle shop and buy said scotch, come back, and get tipsy while i use the site in the aforementioned manner. i usually get a lot of negs when i'm tipsy. but i don't care cos scotch

I love the way I have the power to remove that neg, and give it to you. Good day to you sir.

"I personally think it is great; on it at least twice a day." Are you kidding me??? I refresh OZbargain website at least once every 10 minutes - maybe more! If you snooze, you lose.

People at my work call me "Mr. OZBargain" because they consult me first before making any purchase decision - be it common products like electronics, flight tickets (Thanks to TightArse's posts), vacuum cleaners, condoms (you can get free ones sometimes), boozes to other odd purchases like Enelop batteries, LED flash lights, etc.

    • i am becoming that person i think, i strongly encourage people to come to me first before any purchase! mum and dad never listen! they just signed up for unlimited foxtel from some phone call… however turned a negative into a positive, now have foxtel GO on my iPad and work laptop!

  • Because its there :)

Love the website but it is getting too many people negging peoples comments for no reason.

I come here often in case of the super bargains or a $40 kettle :D

I also come here to see comments/reviews on bargains I already know about.

I come for the bargains but stay for the atmosphere….also JV

  • To make businesses Ozbargained.
    Simple.

I come to spend my daily negs on JV.

    • I like saving money aka not throwing it away because I was lazy to look up a good price.
    • The hysterical comments on some deals
    • $1.40 McFlurry hack - legendary OzB status (use Search if you don't know what I mean). That combined the first two points above.
  • I'm on it all day :P monitoring deals haha, I find it awesome!

  • finding new things to buy

  • Long ago, Ozbargainer lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when unsaid ask a question. Only the jv, master of all comments, could answer him, but when the Ozbargainer needed him most, he vanished.

  • Lot of smart people here, so I just want to learn something from them.

  • JV is not a professional God Folks, just a very bored individual…

Dat Office Works Pod machine was enough reason to use it :)

I've never posted a deal btw. I'm a bargain lurker, not a fully fledged bargain hunter.

edit Like someone said, it's addictive. I check OZB more often than Facebook these days.

    • Probably try contributing if you see deals here and there.

      • Yeah I would. But I mainly come here to learn of deals.

  • PB and JV

  • I enjoy hunting for bargains. As I am now stuck at home a lot more and unable to shop in peace as much as I did when I was child-free, it is my way of virtually sifting through the bargain-rack.

I also enjoy the community aspect of it - being able to ask stupid questions about my car and get a reliable response, and being able to help out with something I know a bit more about. This is also one of the only forums I actively participate in that isn't entirely female, which makes a nice change.

save more money to buy more useless stuff….

  • I know some people use it to save money on stuff they normally buy. I prefer looking out for bargains on things I otherwise couldn't buy or afford. Nice clothing is probably a major one.

  • Love Woolies 30%+ discount plus free deliveries, Dominos discount codes, that Myer $20 voucher, $46 discount from Baby Bunting …. (special deals go on n on)

    1. check OZB to save money with deals for the item you are looking to buy
    2. post deal to share good deal with others who have already shared too many good deals with you

I like the site as it helps me save money on groceries. I also like looking for ways of getting free flybuys and QFF points.

I love the silent edits by spineless moderators. Also the insistence on capitals in headlines.

The comments are the best thing here and they often are by people who know their stuff so sometimes posting a bargain here results in some good discussion about a store or product, especially if you are still in 'research' phase.

    • I love the silent edits by spineless moderators

All changes are listed in the "Revisions" tab on each deal page

Also the insistence on capitals in headlines.

      It makes everything neater :)

      • all edits by moderators do not show up…

I love the silent edits by spineless moderators

If your posts keep getting edited, instead of the problem being with the moderators… maybe… just maybe… it's you who are not doing something right? Surely you're not one of those people who thinks they're always right all the time?

      • -1

Nice assumption eug…however I just hate a spineless moderator making changes to subject headings and post content, especially when it doesn't show up as edited which has happened NUMEROUS TIMES. It infuriates me. I've had it happen to a subject in the forums where I talk about receiving a scratched used game from ebgames (a minor unlisted edit was made to the topic heading) and I have had completely unlisted edits to deals posts…

Recently I have given up on posting new deals because of it. I'm sure you will miss me eug, my ol' sparring partner…

        • All edits (with 1 exception) are logged regardless of who edited them. For example, have a look at the last frontpage deal. The OP, a power user and a moderator edited the deal. The deal you last posted also shows moderator revisions.

The only thing that isn't logged is when moderators do a quick edit to the title (basically when we click the title it becomes editable). This is just a feature built in years ago (before the revisions feature was enabled) to save us time when editing titles as we have to correct lots of spammy titles, missing prices etc. This is the first I've heard of someone having an issue with it but we can certainly look at logging those title changes although I think there is a technical limitation to it at the moment.

          Screenshot of the quick edit

The door is always open to discuss with any of the moderators. This is a community site driven by the what the community wants.

          EDIT:

Further, if we need to remove or change part of a comment we will always manually log it. E.G. Mod: Profanity

EDIT 2: I forgot to mention that tags are also quick edit which are also not logged.

        • not all moderator revisions show up. I am aware of the ones that DO show up. A moderator decided to remove some text from my listing AFTER the last revision was listed on my last deal post. And……it has happened more than once. My ebgames thread in the forums also had its heading silently edited WITH NO NOTICE and the change was minor and silly.

        • @cheepwun:

As before, the title could have been edited without logging a revision. However, the body of the post can't without showing a revision (the edit button needs to be used).

          What was the original title?

        • what bothers me neil is that no name often shows up when it's edited and……the silent edits are just creepy. I thought I was spastic enough with my own edits but the level of control-freak on this site is plain bad.

With that being said, if you can tell me why this heading was changed I'd appreciate it.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130252. The mod literally changed the word ebgames.com.au in the heading to EBgames. A silent edit.

And if you can tell me why the end text of my last deal post was removed without listing a reason or who did the edit….

        • @cheepwun:

The quick title edits are not logged and I doubt a moderator could remember that far back.

As per title guidelines, it's a good idea to include the Store Name. The URL is not needed. If you want to link your discussion with a store, it's best to type the URL into the related store field when you create your post.

It's possible that this is what the moderator did. They removed the URL and linked your discussion to the EBGames.com.au store page.

And if you can tell me why the end text of my last deal post was removed without listing a reason or who did the edit….

          Yes, this I can see.

          The removed paragraph:

PS. remember to turn on the smugness as you interact with those knuckle-draggers STILL buying disposable AA and AAAs in 2014. Do it for me. Cheers.

A moderator removed it based on a report of trolling from a user:

That last line in the description is trying to incite trolls.

The moderator removed that line and looks like you responded to him in the thread

  • I am pretty dumb at knowing what a good deal is, so I put my faith in a bunch of internet strangers.

  • OzBargain use to be about finding the deals as they came around. It then became finding hilarious comments and puns and seeing how badly JV would be negged on his next comment. Some of the forum posts are gold (voteoften takes the cake and watching the mods get right into it all is great to see.

Meetups and competitions create the atmosphere and sense of community (still waiting in Sydney for a meetup!). Trollers don't last long.

Every once in a while there are amazing posts mainly due to people like TA and theearth who make it their life's work to run around all day and post things.
