Why do people use OzBargain?

Hi All,

I am just curious about why people use this website. I personally think it is great; on it at least twice a day.

But I am just wondering why other people use it and go to the effort of posting sometimes the most frivolous discounts (eg: 10c off a bottle of Coke).

What drives you to find these deals and post about it?

Thanks,

T

    I like buying stuff.

More of sharing good deals and saving some bucks for you and others….and contributing to others problem/questions/helps etc….

  • +4

It's addictive, never want to miss out on that special deal that could be gone within minutes of posting! (Like my $500 macbook air that is coming)

    • When did the MBA deal happen??!

        11 inch lol, netbook

Some of us don't feel it necessary to compensate davo

      • Sunday 29th from the kogan ebay deals :)

I come for the Pavlovian response to a set of positive stimuli which scotty has carefully tweaked to entrap us under the pretense of bargain. Like a poker machine, ozbargain 'rewards' users at random momments, requiring users to check in for quick bargains.

  • +15

    Two reasons:

    1. the chance of finding that ultimate bargain - like the Air Asia business class deal, and
    2. the hatred of knowing I could have paid less for something.
  • +7

    Three reasons for me:

    1. Good bargains and the views of the people regarding the product; and
    2. discussions in forum - sometimes I have no idea about topic but the information in discussion is quite good.
    3. JV
    • what is JV ?

      • +17

JV is another OzB member who can; at any given moment; be either banal or witty, insightful or ignorant; all without breaking a sweat! He can often be quite entertaining or frustrating at times, depending on your perspective…

Funny thing is, there have been times when I've been placed in the penalty box for mentioning other users in a similar vein…funny how times have changed around here! :/

        • thanks for the explanation

        • +1

obviously JV needs a wiki entry like broden now……

      • +15

Your account is 7 years old and you've never heard of JV?

        • +2

          not a true ozbargainer.

        • +1

Where is jv anyway? Should be here!

        • No, at first i thought it meant Joint Venture

  • Maybe another reason why I like this website is because I think you can spot bull$### posts pretty easily, especially with the quite attentive audience that comments.

If there were one thing that would ruin this site, what would it be?

      Another JV.

i am also here to read comments and marvel at some users's over the top entitlements

OP, I had a similar thought recently, but on a different slant. Why do people post on OzBargain? Specifically the lucrative deals/freebies. There are so many freebies posted that get abused by the large OzB community and then are removed completely and sometimes even the poster doesn't get any benefit.

Recent examples are the free iPad mini and the free bike light. Both of which got abused and then the promotion was removed shortly thereafter. From a pure financial perspective, it makes more sense for the poster to acquire goods under the promotion until they can no longer consume anymore, then post it on OzBargain. Or in the case of the free iPad minis the poster (Scotty) could have seemingly acquired tens of free iPad minis.

    • +14

Hehe I didn't even managed to get the free iPad. I was about to go on holidays and thought the deal is going to expire at the end of the year anyway - I would have plenty of time.

Was I disappointed? Well maybe a little bit. But being on OzBargain for this long I'm too busy to enjoy other deals than grinding an axe.

Good call. More of us (myself included) can take some wisdom from these words.

        good guy scotty.

        • OzB needs a meme page on the wiki. Or at least a reddit tag.

  • +10

Aren't we all just following the OzBargain feed in hopes of running across the coupon code for happiness?

Somebody kindly put something to that effect on a desk calendar and then send me the royalties. Ta.

    • Iam here for this ^

  • What would you change about this site?

    • +3

I would like a feature that will only allow others to see the bargains once I've seen and bought them myself.

    • a section dedicated to women's things - bags,inner wear,haircare etc.maybe there's a site for that just haven't come across one..!

    • not a change to the site, but an app would be good!

      • an app would be good!

Pin m.ozbargain.com.au to your home screen. Your welcome.

I like the Ozbargain community's love of really bad puns.

    • +5

Haha stop it, it's too punny :')

    • +2

      you're a sucker for punishment

    • time for some punitive measures!

  • +2

It feels great to find a good deal and shared it with same minded people, and it feels great when you find something that is a bargain, the bad things is when you see your credit card statement and wonder how many things you have bought that you don't need.

  • +14

    I'm a professional.

  • +5

    Coz I'm officially addicted :)

  • +1

I was buying a house and didn't have any house hold items. So this website has helped me purchase these items at great prices.

  • +5

    Sense of a community.

  • +13

I just like a nice tight arse

  • +2

They should put in notifications like Facebook :p
That should increase the amount of time spent on Ozbargain even further.

  • I enjoy reading the feed back, takes all kinds. I can't say I've ever found anything of significance on here price wise, but love the read

  • +1

    It's like a national forum :)

  • +2

I've learn a lot from Ozbargain, from spotting a bargain to reading all opinions on a product.

Great thing about Ozbargain is people vocabulary, I've learn better English here then I did when I was in school.

    Cheers to Ozbargain

  • +4

It's also a way of getting product referrals. Specifically if something is good (and a bargain) then people will recommend it. If something is crap, then people will tell you what to get instead.

  • +2

I'm someone that easily gets bored. I'll buy something and be obsessed with it one week, and be bored of it the next. This sites variety of items allows me to keep this terrible habit going, while saving a few bucks along the way.

As the scumbag above me also said, it's also a good way of getting quick reviews of a product. We're all here in the same spirit, so you get a nice balance of reviews from fellow users (rather than just "I really like/hate it" reviews).

And of course, who doesn't like getting a bargain?!

  • i am honestly using ozbargain in the hope of finding the best price on a mail order bride

    • +2

are talking about the blow up doll ?

    • +2

Don't hope. Your fate is in your own hand… or hands if you are ambidextrous.

      • +3

Your fate is in me hands, said the Irish podiatrist. :)

  • +5

I love reading the comments on some of the deals. Had a good laugh at the Ainol tablet ones when they were popular.

  • +2

    To get free shit

  • +1

Because its much more than just a website, its a community of like minded people or bargain seekers or smart spenders or tight arses.

    • Smart arises or tight spenders*

      • smart spenders, JV and tight arse*

  • + votes are a helluva drug!

    • CHARLIE!!!

  • I enjoy reading the comments and forum section rather than getting in on any deals (though I do like browsing the deals purely for the window shopping sense of satisfaction).

I've lost count of how many times a family member or friend IRL has mentioned that they're looking to buy something or need something, and I've been able to give tips based on stuff I've learnt around here.

I also stalk Tas around cos he smart.

    • You're a sweetheart, Miss Turnip, but I did read your forum post yesterday and very nearly suggested 'dingo repellent' as a thoughtful first gift for your friend having the baby…

      Me not too smart.
