  • is it any better than Amaysim Unlimited month to moth plan?

    • Amaysim doesn't offer 4G.

    • -1

Um.. its depend what do you need, this plan is good for who ever using unlimited plan need more quality sevices for less, I Think..

      • +1

Amaysim uses Optus network. For $40, you get unlimited calls and 4GB data, 50% off for the first month sometimes (new customer) and possible $10 bonus credit. As wakie said, Amaysim does not offer 4G anyways

        • -1

After phew years using alot of network in Australia, i know i will get what im paying for. For me the call quality is more impotant. And i dont think Amaysim net work is good as optus or even Virgin, Virgin's signal is not good sometime too

        • I ended up leaving Amaysim and switching to Virgin because on multiple overseas flights, I got barely any network roaming service despite it being enabled and despite people in my group on other carriers having service. Amaysim's customer service was useless - they didn't reply to my multiple queries. Wouldn't recommend them at all.

        • amaysim uses optus network

  • +2

Looks OK but I don't like how they force you to buy a data pack if you exceed your usage. If you go over by just a few MBs on your last day, they automatically charge you $10 for another 1GB data pack, which expires the next day when your plan renews.

    • +6

But a few mb over on the 'other carrier' is more than $10 in excess data charges, so this way you win by saving money and by getting a extra 1GB of data to use!

      • +2

I went a few MB over on my Telstra plan recently and it's 3c per MB, so I was charged 9 cents.

        • Depends on your plans fine print how excess data is charged i know a mate who was charged as previously mentioned by Level380

    • You can request them to block all data once you reach your limit and then enable it again once your into your next month

  • I thought it's Unlimited data as well

    • +5

If it were, I'd stop paying $90 a month for my slow 3Mb/s ADSL2+ and rely solely on mobile data!

      • You mean 3Mbps? 3MB/s is pretty fast!

      • +2

        Someone's had a bad experience..

I've been with Optus for the past few years and have worked all over Melbourne with hardly any issues. I wouldn't call it crap.

My only issue with this deal is $45 for a sim only plan? really?

  • +7

Boost is $40 for the same on the Telstra network.
No 4G but HSPA+ is close enough and the coverage is no contest.

    • +1

I agree. Optus needs to lower their price or offers better value (more data, included international credits or longer expiry) to make this a good deal

    • +3

      No 4G but HSPA+ is close enough…

Not its not. Optus 4G blows Telstra 3G out of the water. Its 3-5x the speed in Sydney and Melbourne.

      • +1

Depends on if you can actually get decent reception though. I just switched from Optus to TeleChoice (Telstra 3G reseller) and I have noticed that my data coverage in general is far, far better than what it was with Optus 3G + 4G.

      • Yeah it all depends on your use case, but with 2GB to download in a month you won't be watching a whole lot of video, your phone will be more likely to be downloading lots of small packets randomly where speed is really not as much of an issue but reliability of reception is always important. If you get good speeds and reception with Optus and never leave Sydney ever and watch one or two videos a month on the train or something then this is a good deal. If you ever have to leave Sydney and want to use your emails and make calls pay less and get boost.

    • Boost also charges in per MB increments.

      • They say this but in reality it's not the case. I think they were to lazy to change the Telstra billing system or something, it charges in 100kb sessions at the moment. And if they did charge in MB increments the data sessions stay open for so long the rounding wouldn't end up being as bad as it sounds.

        • +1

More importantly because Optus coverage is worse & so is congestion/drop outs, you chew up a lot of those 1Mb sessions. Although NextG resellers dont get access to all NextG base stations. If you're in Melb, it's noticable at train stations & sporting events.

Yes the 4g is faster if you're in that small footprint which has coverage.

If your considering this plan for 4G and data you might be better off with Telstra cap encore 50 and purchase the 3GB data for $49 of the $50. With $950 call credit it's basically unlimited calls, you get effectively 3.7GB data and Telstra's coverage and 4G network. Sill one of the best (prepaid) plans out there.

    • +4

At $1 a minute for calls, that's only 950 minutes or around 30 mins a day. That's not unlimited.

On the phone 1 hr a day already doubles that cap. Data may be better though

      • +2

See full charges here. You also get free text and talk between 6pm and 6am. But seijai is right, assuming you spend 30 out of 720 minutes a day on your mobile phone you def need another plan.

I'm an iPhone user and with Telstra 4g FaceTime (audio) calls work everywhere for me reducing the amount of minutes used too.

    • and buy your recharges at coles for $47 ($50 recharge - 10% discount when you buy a $2 starter kit)

    • how can you do that, i mean only spend $50 for 950 worth of calls and 3GB on Telstra?

  • better deals (unless you're actually going to spend over $650 of calls in a month. I doubt that)

    http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Mobile&4Gsimonly

    uses optus 4g network also.

    • +4

Vaya charges data based on per/mb increment. This means sending messages via viber or checking emails only takes 1kb they round up to mb which chews up data. Signed to Vaya before reading this in their conditions of use :(.

      • Aren't they all like that.
It's not rounded up every message sent, it is pet session which could last all day.

        • +2

No. The better carriers charge per kb.

      • Is that still the case? I just checked the terms and conditions and it says they bill in 1kb increments, not 1mb.

Edit: I was looking at their data only sims, not mobile sims.

    • +1

      I agree

This was all recently discussed in the forums. I ended up switching to Jeenee and have had no dramas. They use Optus 4G and currently have a promo

      http://www.jeenee.org.au/sim-packs

might be worthy of its own post when If I get off my arse

EDIT: they also charge per kb and cut you off at 100% usage, that's what made me decide between Vaya and jeenee

      • Have you ever had your data cut off? It's hard to believe they will cut you off at 100%, when their CIS says "Jeenee receives information regarding usage 24 to 48 hours after you accrue it. Therefore we are not able to immediately warn you about heavy usage."

If they do cut you off when they get the (delayed) notification, you would almost certainly be over the limit. Did they waive the excess fees, or did you have to pay them?

        • +1

I have only just signed up. I doubt I will even come close to my limit so I'm not really worried.

Even if there is a delay, cutoff with delay is better than none at all IMO

      • here here pete

        lasted a week with vaya…..claimed i used 2.25gb of data in 3 days….had a look at itemisation….charging 1mb everytime you touch the net…..total bs

signed up with jeenee at 7am this morning lol….was with liveconnected b4….never had a prob….shame their prices arent cheap anymore

  • +7

I say go prepaid optus $2 day

  • +6

Calling it unlimited and then having a fairly low data limit is pretty misleading.

    • +1

Welcome to marketing. I can still remember the days when "Free" meant you didn't have to pay anything, instead of the current "you have to buy something else to get this at no extra cost".

  • I have serious doubts to the claim that Optus signal is better than its resellers. I personally use TPG, company issued an Optus DATA USB, from last night to this morning, data speed on both are very slow (Perth CBD-3G ).

  • It is also important/useful to note that if you seem interested, it is also a bonus to understand that all these new plans that have been released 2 weeks ago have "data sharing" supported among all 'my plan plus plans ' or 'my plan plus sim only plans' under the same bill. This allows you to accumulate the data across all plans on that account to create a larger data pool in which users can use more or less than their original allowance given that the total usage does not exceed the amount in the data pool (or a $10 per 1gb charge applies).
OR you may opt for an extra seperate data sharing sim card to be used from your data allowance to be used in your tablet /mobile broadband if it is for light usage which may possibly save you around $20 if your paying for a tablet simcard (for a $5 one off cost).

Might be handy if you got like an ipad that you dont use much but would like data when you need without using the phone hotspot which consumes battery etc.. or share data with the family where your plan may have 2gb of value but if your total pool is like 4gb with your partner included.. you may use 3gb and he/she may use 1gb if they are a light user, hence that otherwise spare data is being utilised.

    • Sounds good but then you have to transfer the mobile number to be under 1 persons name. Unless there is a way to have them on one bill but in separate names?

Is it just "data sharing" or calls as well?

      • At the moment only data sharing is supported. Only 3 of the 8 plans don't have unlimited voice calls anyways. Unfortunately at the moment it has to be under one bill and can only be under one person's name for the data sharing to work.

  • No thanks I'll stick with Vaya who are on Optus and its only $18/month for 1.5GB of data and $650 calls. If you need unlimited calls then you are on the phone too much (unless its for work purposes)…

Ps but yeah still better than staying with Vodafone!!

    • Anything is better than Vodafail.

  • Beware of the Optus network, The KB data billing will be much better than the MB billing, I am with Amaysim and 4gb feels like its 400MB. You have to be careful as the optus network is sluggish and if you have your network on auto mode, 1MB is charged each time the network switches between 3G and GSM(which happens more than once in a minute) Mobile data needs to be switched off.
