Quick summary:

  • 0.87kg 11.6" laptop with touchscreen
  • 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 802.11ac
  • Includes free Vaio laptop sleeve and VGA adaptor (worth US$53)
  • Carbon fibre body. Doesn't flex as much as the 13" model.
  • US$829.50 US$848.95 + US$66 shipping = ~AUD$972 with a credit card like 28 Degrees.
  • International warranty (see below)

Looks like it's back to pre-orders only. If you put an order in now, they should ship it to you when new stock comes in.

The price has gone up by US$19. Still a good deal though.

This is the new updated i5 Vaio Pro 11 with 802.11ac and 8GB RAM. It's the cheapest I've ever seen. The previous model last sold for $1,499 at JB before this new model was announced - and that only had 4GB RAM and 802.11n wifi.

Engadget review of the previous model: http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/04/sony-vaio-pro-11-review/

I had the previous model last year and really loved it. The awesomely light weight made it a breeze to carry anywhere.

There were some issues early on (mainly wifi) which have all been fixed with driver updates. I had no problems with mine.

I'm not sure why B&H are selling it for US$829. I've put two orders through and they've both been accepted. It was listed at $829 a week or two back on pre-order, and now it's finally in stock.

The Sony.com price is US$1249.99.

And yes, Sony is selling their laptop business to another company. But so did IBM and ThinkPads are still doing great.

I don't think there's international warranty so keep that in mind.
It looks like there is international warranty. If you click on "In the box", it lists "1 Year Limited Warranty with Onsite/In-home & International Service". Thanks Kelvin!

This will very likely come with a US plug, so you'll need a plug converter or a new power cable like the ones below.

Hmm your comment about IBM and Thinkpads..

Lenovo, took over IBM thinkpads.. for a while things were fine.. now, they are plain disastrous for service and support in Australia…

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1996210

Lenovo and Acer, are on my current do not buy list…

I'd be very cautious about buying a laptop from overseas, without warranty and which isn't sold in Australia..

    • The thing I like about ThinkPads is that you most likely won't need to deal with service or support as they're well-made machines.

That said, I did have to send my ThinkPad Tablet 2 in for repair last year. It took a long time and they were really poor at responding to emails. A letter to Fair Trading took care of it though.

I've had a whole string of ThinkPads both personally and purchased for work and never had any problems before the TPT2.

I'd be very cautious about buying a laptop from overseas, without warranty and which isn't sold in Australia..

Yup that's one thing to consider, but seeing as it's the second generation "refresh", all the earlier problems should be ironed out by now.

    • Add gigabyte to your list

    • +1

Whingepool isn't really the best place for an unbiased look at tech companies.

    • add asus to your list too… absolutely hopeless!

      • Probably just add Asus Acer Lenovo Gigabyte MSI Dell HP Samsung LG Microsoft all to the list, because no matter what there will always be someone unhappy about something.

especially most of the time you can only speak to their Filo outsourced people. (I'm mainly talking about Microsoft, worst support I've encountered)

    • I have a Thinkpad T420 which is great.

I don't know what's so bad about Thinkpads!

    • Hmmm.. all my laptops are thinkpad. I have S10, L420, E520 and X230T and I have no complaints at all. I reinstalled the OS with Windows 8.1 and no problems so far.
I recommended L420 to my friend and he brought it to his field trip. he dropped it many times during the trip, the case cracked a little bit but it still runs well until now. No need to contact customer service.

    Getting tempting…

  • Hmm tempted.
If Surface Pro 3 and Asus T300 Chi are available today, which one would you guys choose?
Surface Pro 3, Asus T300 Chi or this one?

    • +1

      Surface for sure ;)

    • +3

It really depends on personal preference and budget. I had a Surface Pro with Type Cover at the same time as my Pro 11.

For the way I use my devices, I found the Pro 11 more usable as it wasn't top-heavy like any other convertible tablet. It also weighs less than the SP/SP3 with type cover. That means it sits down more securely on non-flat surfaces, and is easier to balance on a lap if you don't always sit with a straight lap.

When I want to move around, I can just grab the Vaio by the keyboard and walk around with the screen open, whereas the Surface Pro was more fiddly as I had to close the type cover which puts the tablet to sleep, otherwise it'll flop around.

The Surface Pro range does have a Wacom (now Ntrig) digitizer though. If you find them useful, that could be another plus. I love Wacom digitizers but I don't use them all the time, so I went with the Pro 11 and Thinkpad Tablet 2. Both of them together weigh less than most laptops.

The SP3 and T300 are very attractive devices though. They're still top-heavy, but the rest of it might make up for that!

      • A very thorough review.
        Thanks eug!

  • I'm heading to the US next week… Thinking I might pick this up there in person..

    • Hopefully the price doesn't change!

      • +1

True this… Plus I prob need to consider sales tax in NY which could put it over the laptop + shopping price to aus ;-/

  • -7

DO WE HAVE TO PAY CUSTOMS? BECAUSE ITS COMING FROM OVERSEAS AND ITS A HIGH PRICE PRODUCT

    • +8

Nope, it's under the AUD$1,000 limit.

        • What? The law hasn't been removed…

Or did you type something else and then remove that?

What duties and taxes will be applied to the goods I have purchased from the internet when they arrive?

Consignments valued over AUD 1000 will be assessed for Customs duty and taxes. Duty rates vary from 0% to 10%, however most goods attract a 5% rate of import duty and 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST).

        • LOL didn't see that coming. No I didn't drop a bombshell and announce that the GST threshold has been removed by the federal government. I just removed what I typed

  • +1

Oh dang, it has international warranty. Very tempting… hhhnnnnnggggggg

    • +10

Some of us don't like low-resolution TN screens and 4GB of RAM.

        • +7

Most of you? Ahh, that must be why the MBA's market share is so high. :)

p.s. I missed the part where you say 13" MBA. This deal is about an 11" laptop. Those who find 11" laptops too small won't be looking here. The 1.05kg Vaio Pro 13 is only $100 more anyway.

        • +7

          You're RIGHT!
          We're in 2014!
We don't need to carry a laptop with a lower resolution than our phones.
Most of us want a laptop on WINDOWS, since most of the world uses Windows.*

          *Source

        • And some of us want a keyboard layout without command key and a trackpad with more than one button. :-)

  • Not long ago there's a massive battery overheating recall from sony, so this model isn't affected ya?

    • Nah, that was the flippy-screen Vaio Fit 11A.

  • +2
    • i love13.3 more than 11. and this one is still (just )under 1000aud

    • Bought the 13". Its sitting just less than $1000 cos Aus is sitting at ~$0.94 US. Will customs cause problems if dollar weakens at time of delivery and item is more than $1000?

Edit (found my answer): 'The exchange rate that is used is the rate applied on the day the goods were posted or exported.'

      • nevermind

        • Ohhhh….so tempting…..but you can't upgrade the SDD in this one can you?

      • -1

Be very careful with the 13". Once you add shipping you will be over A$1000. Unfortunately the GST amount is calculated on the "Value" you receive and that includes shipping.

To quote from the customs website:
Note: For imported goods the value of the taxable importation (VoTI) is the sum of:

        • the customs value (CV)

        • any duty payable

        • the amount paid or payable to transport the goods to Australia and to insure the goods for that transport (T&I)

        • +2

Well Im confused. Anyone know? Only thing it says is that cost is calculated when shipped, so as long as Aussie dollar doesnt slide a few cents in the next few days, I should be good?

I'm going off this document (2011 Document)
          http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/ValueofImp…

ARE FREIGHT AND INSURANCE COSTS INCLUDED?
The Customs value does not include freight and insurance costs
in transporting the goods from the ‘place of export’ to Australia.

        • +4

          Hi Team Teri,

Shipping is NOT included where the value of the goods is under $1,000. The CV and VoTI are 2 different things. Shipping is only included in the calculations where the CV is over $1000.

In this case if the item was $950 and the shipping was $100, the item would not be subject to customs duty or GST. If the item is worth $995 you could be asking for trouble if there is a small change in the exchange rate though!

Hope this clears it up - there's a lot of misinformation about this out on the nets.

** The following factsheet helps explain it a little bit - http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/ValueofImp…

        • -2

team teri please do NOT confuse the others.

          Baxter is absolutely correct!!

        • -1

          Hi baxter,

that would be very nice. What is missing though for peace of mind is a clear statement anywhere that defines whether the $1000 is meant to be based on CV or VoTI. In all documents I can find they only write "value of the goods". Both CV and VoTI are values, one for customs duty, the other for GST purposes.

It would be good to sight the piece of legislation that actually sets that $1000 threshold, unfortunately my Google skills don't seem to be up to finding it.

        • I took the plunge and bought the 13.3. I really hope it's still under $1000 AUD when they posted it (hopefully soon). Now the waiting game.

        • +1

@ Team Teri - I'm not sure if you read it, but the factsheet I linked to was pretty clear - the very first line under the heading reads: "The Customs value is the value to be used when goods are imported into Australia." And I think we are in complete agreement that the relevant threshold beyond which GST and duty is levied is $1000. There is also a heading "ARE FREIGHT AND INSURANCE COSTS INCLUDED?" which clearly say that the main shipping cost (ie. from overseas to Australia) is not included in the Customs Value.

Please don't make it any more difficult than it is. I have personal experience of this as well, buying tyres worth $950 with shipping of $260 - I was not levied with GST or customs duty on this purchase.

  • is there a point to have a touch screen with non-detachable laptop?

    • +3

I think it's personal preference. I've been using touchscreens on normal laptops for many years and find it very useful. Once you're used to it, it can be hard to go back - I always find myself almost tapping my friends' laptops screens. Whenever a dialog box pops up, or you need to click on a Submit button or something, it's much quicker to just tap the screen rather than to move the cursor with the touchpad and click. Scrolling on the screen itself is quite nice too.

    • -1

      In short, no.

    • I asked the same question before I owned one. It is useful, especially when it comes to scrolling. I felt stupid after thinking my other laptop had a touchscreen function.

  • Has anyone successfully put an order? My order can't be processed. Neither paypal nor credit card accepted.

    • Two orders, both went through, and credit cards have been charged.

  • +3

Just a note before anybody rushes in.

Check that Full HD on 11 inch is ok on your eyes.

  • -1

For the 13.3" gonna be over $1000 after adding the shipping , that's means gonna pay tax?

    • As far as I know, shipping isn't included

    • nope, threshold is not shipping inclusive

    • -5

Yes, unfortunately. From the customs website:

Note: For imported goods the value of the taxable importation (VoTI) is the sum of:

      • the customs value (CV)

      • any duty payable

      • the amount paid or payable to transport the goods to Australia and to insure the goods for that transport (T&I)

      • +2

        Says otherwise here:
        http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/ValueofImp…

ARE FREIGHT AND INSURANCE COSTS INCLUDED?
The Customs value does not include freight and insurance costs
in transporting the goods from the ‘place of export’ to Australia.

      • please STOP misleading others, teri!

  • Is it recommended to pay using other cards that offer extended manufacturer warranty but with not so good fx rate and cc charge?

    • Better check and see if the extended warranty covers products purchased from overseas.

  • Dammit just bought 13 version with 4gb ram 2nd hand for 700 on Sat. Probably would have bought this if I had known, darn it.

  • Really tempting. Anyone knows if we just need to change the power cable to make it OZ compatible or do we need socket adapter?

    • I bought my Lenovo Y500 from them last year. Need to change the cable or use a socket adaptor.

      • Thanks for the reply. What i meant is sometimes the connector is fixed so we need to use socket adapter. But sometimes we can just change the power cable. From your answer looks like we can just change the cable. Thanks.

  • SSD expandable?

  • emm hows this compared to the dell inspiron 15 5000 deal days ago?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/148658
    thx

    • the weight, the screen size and the graphics, etc.

    • +1

totally different product. this is ultraportable, that one isnt. Hence it has a slightly faster processor and more RAM, screen size, graphics card, and weight.

      • -1

        yeah, noticed dat
but hows about for gaming and the performance of running heavy applicaiton like photoshop etc
cant find any review for these two

        • +2

Don't go for ultraportable or even most ultrabooks if you are worried about serious gaming and performance. Get a graphics card, and better processor in your laptop.

  • -3

B&h do have past form with not honouring deals. I got burned by an Intel ssd deal couple years ago. It was a similar setup where it was a new release product with lower than expected pricing. But good luck to all who orederd it looks like a ripper of a device.

    • -2

      I got negged? Seriously?

  • friend bought the 13" version with 802.11n, i5, 128gb, 4gb from jb hifi about 8 months ago for $1400. absolutely amazing laptop. so incredibly light for a laptop it makes tablets seem heavy.

  • Awesome deal thanks OP.

I'm super keen on the 13' i7 with 256GB SSD but it does go over the 1000 limit…

Is the i7 much of a performance boost over the i5? I've looked up a few benchmarks seems to be up to 20% faster at high workload.

But the larger SSD makes a big difference too given up to 64GB is taken up by the OS and bloat ware.

gst is 10% paid after it arrives in Aus?

  • BTW 13" doesn't seem to come with laptop sleeve like 11".

    • A 13" sleeve can be bought from ebay around $5 delivered…

  • -1

Bit risky to ship it from an overseas seller and avoid Customs duty.
They could include the value of the bonuses to tip the total over $1,000.

I found a refurbished one on Grays for $783.95 that's identical except for the RAM and it's black:
    http://www.graysonline.com/retail/svp11216cgb-r/computers-an…

In 3 months time you could upgrade the ram to 8GB making it identical to this offer.

    • If you researched this model, it is not upgradable.

Most ultrabooks aren't upgradable as the RAM is soldiered in.

      • Also, it looks like it could be the previous model? Listed as 802.11 b/g/n vs 802.11ac not sure of any other differences.

        • +1

Yup, that's definitely the previous model. My friend bought it from Grays early last week (oops).

It arrived with a few minor scratches, but was otherwise good. It's the exact same model as the one I had. I much prefer 8GB over 4GB though.

          Old model - Windows 8, 4GB RAM, 802.11n
This model - Windows 8.1, 8GB RAM, 802.11ac. Comes with VGA adaptor and pouch. Also brand-new, scratch-free, and comes with a new unused battery.

Not sure if there are any other differences.

  • How can you have a solid product like the one mentioned here for sale at $950 and an Android tablet for sales at $1098?

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/sam…

Who would want the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro? You could grab the new Surface Pro 3 when it comes out, slap on BlueStacks and miss out on nothing significant but gain so much more. Am I missing something?

    • Yeah I was confused with the pricing for that one as well. I can see how Android on that screen size would be suitable for some people, but not at THAT price!

      • My Nexus 10 has that resolution screen and has been available for a year and a half, of course its touch screen isn't as good, but crikey!

        • I don't think the screens compare though. I have the Nexus 10 as well, and the screen on the Galaxy Note Pro looks brighter and more vibrant.

        • $600 better?

        • +1

Well they're two different devices (Wacom digitizer, bigger screen, more RAM, microSD slot, much faster processor, 4G option) so you can't really compare them.

It's $679 (+$34 shipping) at Kogan BTW. The Nexus 10 is $469 from Google. It's fast approaching 2 years old - makes it a bit difficult to recommend to anyone at that price.
