Not the cheapest they've been, but still a pretty good deal for a great pair of headphones!

The thing is, M50's are actually entry level headphones whilst these are mid to high ends headphones. Whilst i don't actually own either of the pair, from reviews the M50's shouldn't be comparable in terms of SQ.
In fact the M50's would be compared to other entry level headphones like the CAL! 1 and 2.
All in all though, these reviews are all dependent on the reviewer, so if you have spare cash to spend, you're better testing it out yourself and if you don't like it sell it on ebay or something.
Every headphone post on OZB:
'How do these compare to M50s?'
'LOL I got ten pairs of headphones for $2 from <random chinese website>'
'How do these compare to UE4000s?'not sure why you got down voted but you're dead right lol.
May as well compare apples to oranges since DT990 is open can as opposed to the closed can on the m50 but generally M50 will make your ears sweat, good for bass heads, sound isolation.
DT990 will be better in every other respect with clearer, but less bass and a whole shit tonne better sound stage (which basically means instruments will sound like they are coming from different directions, easier heard than explained =P) and fidelity.
M50 is okay for a cheap can but I went with DT770's as they sounded a lot better. If I had the disposable cash for these and a nice dedicated headphone amp I'd grab these in a heartbeat and they'd be my dedicated music headphones.
Do you like bass? Will you be using this on the move? Will your spouse be annoyed at sound leaking from your headphones? ATH-M50x.
Do you play video games (and will benefit from a wider soundstage)? Will you be listening to long periods of time and don't care about sound leaking? DT990 Pro.
I LOVE the DT990 Pro. The velour pads are amazingly comfortable and I didn't get any clamping when I was wearing them (as opposed to my HM5 when I first got it). I'm not a basshead and I really enjoy being able to pin point from which direction I'm being shot at when I'm gaming.
Can't wait to get mine! Do you use them with an amp? How difficult are they to drive through an on-board sound card?
If you're not interested in permanent hearing damage then almost anything will run them just fine. Speaking from personal experience. I have attached them to USB sound cards, DACs, portable media players, phones, computers…
I tried headphone amps when I purchased my last DAC but found that it was totally unnecessary.See post below.
Unless you like your music loud, no problems when driving with the on-board sound card.
Easy comparison: ATH-M50x are better suited to enjoying music, DT990 is better suited to use in a studio for monitoring, mastering etc.
IF you're not using the DT990 in a studio, you're probably better off with the ATH-M50x.
I think it's a matter of preference and suiting your needs/tastes. :)
That's retarded. They aren't even close to being a reference headphone - at least, outside Beyer marketing material. But regardless, please feel free to let us know why you can't listen to music on them.
I didn't say you can't, but it's a general comparison aimed at the average 'noob' asking for a blanket comparison between the two. OF course they're not 'reference' headphones but they're much more linear than the M50x.
It would be like if someone said "Should I get a Mazda 3 or a Hilux" and I'd answered get the Hilux if you intend to go offroad, doesn't mean I'm saying it's no good for driving around the city, it's just paying a premium for something that doesn't really suit your use case.
Keep in mind that depending on your music taste, you may need a headphone amp to drive these to a satisfactory level.
Works fine with iPhone without amp…
So it should be Ok unless you really wanna be loud.
How do these compare to hd25-1 ii?
I am personally looking for something that is an upgrade in terms of sound, and more comfortable, but hopefully within 150-300 zone, preferably less. :D
same here . .was tossing between the HD25-1 ii and the m50x. .and now this comes along :(
Maybe these?

These are good, really good but I havent used mine at all and got the DT770 pro as the sound leakage on these (990) was huge, especially in my quiet house. I love my DT770s :D really comfy as well, both of them.
Im gonna have to get some of those ATH-M50x one day just to hear the difference once and for all lol
These are awesome, depending on what ohms version you get you might want to look into getting a headphone amp.
Mod: Neg revoked
The DT990's do not require a headphone amp.
^ So why the Neg?
HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG
Bought them. :D
come with a lifetime warranty?
Beware this headphone in the deal is rated at 250 Ohms and will require a decent amp to power properly.
Don't you mean the good news is you get to buy an amp after purchasing these?
Those poor ears are going to get blown away by that power.
Imagine getting the 600 OHM version. What kind of crazy AMP would you need for that.
Any decent headphone amp will handle it fine. I've got dt880/600s and while at home they get run off a Woo Audio 7, if I'm away they run perfectly well from a tiny Fiio e12 mont blanc
That's not really true. At 96dB/mW, they will be plenty loud off a 1v source like a phone or tablet.
Amping won't hurt, but unless you are listening to ridiculous volumes or have music with a really high dynamic range, you can definitely get away without one.
Wrong. Speaking from experience, you do NOT need a headphone amp.
It's not wrong, amplification isn't just about volume, it's more to do with making the drivers more responsive, therefore producing better sound quality. There is no headphone I have tried that wasn't improved by an amp, and these being higher resistance, benefit more than others.
With the use of amplifiers, headphones (of a reasonable quality) can deliver much superior resolution and detail. That much is true.
However, this is heavily dependant on a large number of factors that have not been mentioned in this bargain.Headphones statement implies that the DT990's are of no use to someone without a headphone amplifier. This is certainly not true.
To most people who just want nice headphones, these certainly do the job as they are. What factors?
He didn't imply that at all 'power properly' and 'no use' are not the same thing.Bottom line is, there are better options out there if you have no intention of amplifying these.
I found the clamp was a little strong and was a little uncomfortable after long use.. takes some time to get used to.. well i got a big head and big ears. Excellent wide soundstage. Good "not" overly boomy bass but firm. To nit pick, I reckon the midrange is little thin but nevertheless warm & dynamic.. Treble is a little on the bright metalic when new … But settles after a burn in.. it becomes less grainy and you can tweak EQ a couple of notch and its perfect.. I find that you can get good control of the sound with tweaking the EQ. good headphones for bass centric music eg hiphop, dnb, trance, dance etc.
comparing it to the above mentioned HD25-1ii.. the force of the clamp is quite stressful.
Soundstage is fairly small. Bass is punchier and warm.. mids are neutralish, highs are detailed with some slight trebbley high hiss. I reckon these are suited to rocky.. even jazz.. metal etc..
I did have them hooked up to a JDS labs headphone amp.
just my experience… Got access to a heapload of mid-high end headphone from a mate who's a manic audiophile .
For anyone considering between the 770s, 880s and 990s (also Pros vs Premiums, and for each level of resistance), this guide is pretty helpful.
The DT990 Pros are supposed to have a 'fun' sound. Personally, I've found that although the soundstage is great, the sound is not as transparent as some other mid-range cans, eg HD600s or even DT880s.
Thank you Poppingtags. One set of headphones purchased.
Madvillain will never have sounded so good!
+1 for the madvillainy avatar!
How would these headphones compare to something like say the ATH-M50x?
Reading some of the reviews is just mind bending:
Pros: Wide soundstage, Up front & involving, Instrument seperation, Clarity, Imaging placement location of sounds.
Cons: Mids recession very tellable on some songs, clamp, ear cup depth, big fatigue once amped
Almost as bad as reading wine reviews :S
