LG G2 D802 4G LTE (16GB, Red) $379 Shipped @ Kogan

630

I know this phone has been posted previously at this price, but I went to purchase this morning, and noticed they're now offering free shipping. I just purchased on my sister's behalf for @ $379 shipped.

I own the Nexus 5, and this is pretty much the same, with a few minor differences in screensize, camera, and wireless charging.

  • 2 weeks lead time. hmmmm

  • Any recommended case to go with this?

    • +1

The Quickview case for it was bundled with mine when I got it locally and it looks pricey but I like the fact it can show time / weather through the little window. And allow for music control.

    • There's not many good quality cases as the phone isn't as popular as Galaxy or Xperia. I got vinyl skins on mine. Improved the rear case grip and enough protection from light scratches.

Get a decent screen protector tho! The screen is so lovely don't mess it up with bubbles!

    • I've got 4 cases. My favourites are the Nillkin window case (has a magnet) - you can also answer calls through the window without having to open the case which is nifty; and the bumper case - phone is still sleek, just adds grip (the back is pretty slippery).

  • Nexus 5 for only $10 more - if you don't mind white : http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-google-nexus-5-d821-16gb-whit…

      Isn't the G2 better than Nexus 5?

      • +6

        Hardware wise - Yes
        Software wise - No

        • +9

Arguable and highly depends on user, their preferences and tech level.

        • -1

Both run KitKat out of the box.

          LG G2 is 4.4.2
          Nexus 5 is 4.4.3

          Hardly a show stopper…

        • +2

kit kat came to G2 about 6 months after it came to N5.

      • +8

Having used both i kept G2.

        1. Better camera
        2. I liked the styling better (buttons, gloss black) - depends on person
        3. Screen less chance of defect (LG would use only their highest quality panels for their flagship) - 2x friends had N5 and had dead pixel issues at arrival.
        4. Software is a bit more cluttered but theres extra features like Qpanel and Qmemo - so depends on person.
        5. And finally - G2 battery that keeps on going and going. (N5 does have wireless charging which makes charging easier)
    • N5 comes with 2 year Australian warranty

  • I'm a happy G2 user but that Note 3 Neo at $20 more is making me look twice - http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-note-3-neo-4g-lte…

    • Whats 'neo' about it, different from Note 3? Also 4.2 JB. Really? That's not so neo…

      • Cheaper alternative to the Note 3 with some lower specs but lower price tag. I like the idea of the S Pen but wonder how much I would really use it.

        • +2

I have a Note 2 that I bought specifically for the pen. I can't remember using it in the past 6 months (the pen that is). It will be making it's way onto Ebay this weekend so I can grab either a G3 or 1520 depending on how much I can get for it.

      • Basically its their lower end phone which appeals to the bargainers. lol.
The naming of their products reminds me of this article I read this morning about making cool names for pain killers then charging 3x the price.

        http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/the-truth-about-your…

It makes people think they are getting a bargain since its Note 3 and it has an extra word at the end. It MUST be better.

        • True, unless the word "mini" is at the end :)

      • Spec's look similar to a Note2. Only has a 720p screen, slower processor etc.

        • though the design is much better imo, the fake leather back is a surprisingly nice material. Its not slippery and not a finger print magnet.

    • Quite compelling price to consider Note 3 Neo in comparison to G2

  • +3

no Optus 4G Plus capability (2300MHz LTE band 40)

    • Nice screen when I saw my brother's.

  • +2

Seriously considering in getting this phone.
My only problem is it's from Kogan (I've had bad experience with them in the past).

    I need a phone with:

    • Good camera (definitely need optical image stabilisation).
    • Decent battery life. I'm hoping it to last 2 days or more before charging (I don't spend every waking moment fiddling with my phone, just web browsing on the train about 1 hr/day and low volume instant msging).
    • Great compatibility with CyanogenMod 10.x (I'm simply used to CM).
    • Minimal resolution 1280x720.

This phone seems to tick all the requirements. Anyone know if there's a better phone/deal for my needs?

      • They're too expensive for my budget, unfortunately :(

        • +4

haha yes i thought it would be, but I did answer your question (which didn't specify a budget) :), so I really don't think the negs were justified.

        • +1

I agree, you shouldn't be negged just because people disagree on your suggestions. AFAIK, your device suggestions do fulfill the criteria I posted.

        • +8

          iPhone 5 can't run Cyanogenmod

    • This phone matches (if not exceeds) ALL your requirements, bro!

I got this in the last deal, and got it delivered within a week (this 10th - Brisbane). First time I've used Kogan, not a bad experience so far.

My previous phone was a Galaxy S2, running on CM for the last 2 years! As such, the damn LG interface is kinda driving me crazy. I've found temporary relief by installing Nova launcher and adding in a flat icon pack!

Wondering how long I can hold out, before I void the warranty and give in to the CM11 sweetness!

A Nexus 5 (damn the camera!) or an S4 could be your alternatives.

      • why dont you install the kitkat launcher, you can do that easily on NON kitkat OS's easily as I have on a standard GS3.

        • I am ON KitKat, I do not just want the launcher, the dialer is what is an eye-sore right now.

Have you tried CM? It's pretty hard going back to stock after that! And I love Nova, it has been my launcher for years! Even on CM11.

    • +2

From my personal experience (Nexus 5), Kogan warranty blows. Took them 4+ weeks to replace a Nexus 5 with a faulty screen. How hard was it to power phone on and see lines down 1/3 of the screen??

      • -2

Case in point re: N5 vs G2, if there's still any question.

LG reserved the best panels for G2 and N5 got the rejects.

    • +1

I've had my G2 for about 6 months now, and can say it will fulfil your selection criteria:

      • Great camera, and gets better with root and mods (only on stock ROMs).
      • Easily get 50+ hours of average usage.
      • Was running PA 4 til recently (near perfect ROM, except camera quality drops on any CM/AOSP ROMs).
      • Absolutely brilliant screen.

Only issue I see is while the camera is alright outside of stock, nothing beats running the official app in stock, but developers are working on ports of the stock camera app to use in CM/AOSP.

ATM I'm running rooted stock with camera mods that enable 4k and 720p HFR, and xposed adds heaps of customisation, with the 4.4 Google Home Launcher.

      • That sounds like an amazing set up! I'm trying my level best not to root for at least 6 months or so!

Does Xposed offer means by which I can get the default Google dialer? The stock LG is HIDEOUS, I'm contemplating buying ExDialer or something similar.

      • +2

Whoaaa… Hold on there. Thankfully you chimed in.
The camera quality drops outside stock rom? That's a big deal for me.

  • What a really great phone with the ONLY thing missing is the external storage capability.

  • +3

I did have this phone previously. I dropped it from pocket height with a hard case on and the screen completely shattered.

This is a warning. To replace the screen you need to replace the LCD. It isn't just the digitiser.

The cost is about $260. So be wary of that. Besides that the phone is awesome. I loved it but now have a Note 3 with an otterbox case.

I sold the phone on eBay to get some money back and received about $140 after fees and postage. The only down fall is you cannot factory restore unless you have access to the phone. Which the screen was stuffed so the touch wasn't working and you need to hold the home button to put it into factory mode. Silly design flaw that is….

    • Thanks for the heads-up. That's definitely not a cheap repair. I'll keep that in mind.

    • Aww… Tough luck, i have dropped mine with only vinyl back and glass front protectors twice from pocket height onto tiled surfaces. Have been lucky to not get cracked screen. I do have a small ding in the corner. Overall it has been pretty robust, on par with my previous phones (Xperia, Galaxy).

      • +1

I use a cheap generic tempered glass screen protector, it saved my screen once. It certainly would have cracked for certain otherwise. That being if I had a plastic phone, the phone itself could have cracked and may not have saved my phone afterall, but a cheap case can help that. :)

This is a bargain imo, it isn't really much of a downgrade over current flagships and like around half the price. Apart from being kogan, there's no reason to choose the N5 over this.

    • Nexus 5 has the same easy-shatter problem with a similar cost for the fix.

Galaxy S4 doesn't (i9506 for equivalent SoC/CPU). Unsure on the Sony Z range. Unsure on the Galaxy S5 but would expect it doesn't.

      • For the record: my Nexus 5 cracked after dropping on it's bottom left corner. The screen did not take any direct hit.

    • +2

Any large smartphone screen will break if it makes direct contact with a hard object (a rock, hard edge of a staircase etc..). A case can only protect the screen if it can prevent the screen from making contact. To protect a glass screen, you need something like a tempered glass screen protector or an impact resistant screen protector like a Rhino shield.

As for replacing just the Digitizer, it can be done on a G2 as demonstrated here. Replacing just the digitizer is not easy, but with proper tools and skills you can do it on most phones. Even if you replace the whole screen you can do it for way less that $260, as you can easily find replacement screens on eBay for as low as $75

      • +1

Exactly, invest in tempered glass screen protectors, well worth it. My HTC One with no case was dropped from approximately 6 feet and landed face first on gravel, its completely fine thanks to the tempered glass protector.

  • I can vouch that the LG G2 is a GREAT phone. You will love it and there is a reason why the G2 has such a glowing reputation.

Bought mine from Kogan as well and everything is fine. Would recommend. G3 isn't really much of an upgrade either so just get the G2 and upgrade to the G4.

Alternative option is this deal : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147986

Sell the PS3 ($200), Australian Stock (Optus 4G Plus), Quickview case, shared data with another device, …

    • Plus 2 years of Australian warranty

    • What's the nett price ? The post is just so long and confusing.

  • Thanks OP, bought the 32GB white for the missus ($429). Happy with the purchase. Was about to buy the N5 from the google store for around $400~$450 AUD(incl shipping) but woke up to this deal. Now if anyone can recommend me a good, durable case, that'd be awesome :)

  • What are Kogan's delivery times like? Very tempted but heading overseas on the 26th, worth the plunge?

    • -1

yeah, usually its only a wait of a few days for them to source the phone. They use tnt i think for delivery.

    • They ship from overseas and who knows if they suddenly run out of stock and delay your order to when you're out of the country.

    • You can always try http://www.t-dimension.com/

  • +1

I bought one, shipping was actually magnificent, shipped from the warehouse last Saturday and came this Tuesday. Thought I'd buy a case before it turned up but it came straight away and my case hasn't even been shipped yet…

Does everything I want, sorta ruined my SWOTVAC a bit but mmm what are you gonna do.

Free shipping now blows though, but the time I've had the phone makes it worth it, sorta… I actually really like the red too :D

    • hah. I've got exams to prep for too.. :/ Hmmm a bargain is a bargain though. Hope delivery is as fast as your experience!

  • Does this take SD cards?

    • Sadly no

  • +2

    http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/index.php?main_page=advanc…

has the black and white 32gb version for AU$416, which is the cheapest as far as i know. considering this phone doesn't have sd card expansion, i'd highly recommend spending the additional $37 and getting the 32gb version.

t-dimension also has free TOLL courier shipping for australian orders. Also, last time i ordered from them, I was given $15 as a refund for posting a review on facebook.

shipping only took max 4 days (during easter break as well which is amazing).

For waranty returns, they also pay for return shipping.

    • +2

never bought any phone from tdimension but got a camera lens and it was flawless

  • Apparently the 32GB white is also on free shipping $429. Do you think I should pay $50 extra to get an additional 16 GB?

    • +1

If storage is a priority, then yes $50 for an extra 16gb is quite reasonable. Really the only person who can answer that question is you. :P

      • true dat. 32GB it is :)

      • 16gb isn't actually that much, sadly those companies don't give you the "True" usable size, as some of this is already taken up.

True Usable is likely to be around 12-13GB. Which is easily filled up with music, pictures and videos. You will be surprised how quick 13GB can disappear.

    • +2

t-dimension is cheaper and from experience, the waranty service is better then kogan.

      • Bite the bullet finally. 32GB white hopefully I wont regret.

How tdimension is better in term of warranty? With Kogan you can ship the device to Sydney while tDimension asks to send to HK

        • +1

As far as I know, kogan still need to send device back to hong kong. With t-dimension, you send it direct and it's via courier. Turnaround time is around 1-2 weeks.
From others above, kogan can take quite a while for returns such as 4 weeks.

        • +1

Further. The turn around with T-Dimension is QUICK, even quicker than Kogan.

If you want it to go quick you need to do the following:
          1. Take a video of the issue and upload to Youtube. Upload any other relevant videos of you trying to diagnose the issue. e.g. prove that it is BROKEN.

          1. Email T-Dimension with the youtube links and a problem description.

          2. T-Dim will email you their Fedex Account Number, call Fedex and organise a pickup.

          3. The item arries at T-Dim within 3 days.

          4. Replacement takes around 1 week to arrive back at your doorstep via Toll.

End to end time is less than 2 weeks.
Where as many reports for Kogan it is upwards of 4weeks for a warranty claim.

Cannot find anything on Kogan in regards to paid return shipping, so you may have to foot the costs for sending it back to them for warranty purposes.

  • Decided to bite on this deal. Sadly only got the 16gb model. Couldn't justify paying an extra $50 for an extra 32gb.
Seriously don't understand why they charge so much more for an extra 16gb. A high end 32gb micro SD only costs around $25!

Was also considering the s4 active and note 3 neo given both are in the same price range but with expandable memory, but the lg g2 just seemed to have an edge on everything else but the memory size.

  • tempted

  • Pulled the trigger op, thanks.

  • Ordered on 12, today received an email that my order is being processed and will leave the warehouse in 7 to 10 days. Given delivery will take 4 to 5 days, that would be roughly 2 weeks. Anyone got a better ETA?

    • That's probably business days, so probably 3 weeks…

    • Same same. Hoping it comes a lot sooner than that. Keep us posted!

    • Just got confirmation this evening that my phone has left the warehouse! Should be approx 3-5 days. If so, very happy.

      • Mine arrived yesterday. Been playing with it for the whole day. Pretty happy with the quality. Any recommendation for a good case? I got one from Amazon (link is not allowed so I cant post) but would be interested to hear from you guys

  • lolz im banging my head now. DSE is running another 20% which brings the price of G2 even lower than Kogan

    • Still coming up $518 ($548-$30) for the 32GB for me.

      EDIT Ah. On their Ebay store. $548 - 20% (code CDSH20) + $4.95 delivery = $443.35

  • Bought one, DOA. Gotta love the fact that they put a sticker on it saying it was Quality Tested by Kogan themselves.
