The UV filter in particular features the following:

  • Ultra-thin frame
  • Double sided, multi-coating
  • High transmittance
  • Black superfine polished frame
  • Automatic-locked clamping ring

More info about the filter can be found at the Nisi website.

  • Expensive for a no name branded UV filter…

Citiwide do their no name brand for $3.72 delivered on their eBay store. This is the 77mm thread size I am talking about.

There's even a listing for the Hoya 77mm UV for $13.90 delivered.

    • Hi MrDerrickC,

I don't think that's for their Multi-coated filter. Standard UV filters are dirt cheap overall, regardless of brand, but the quality of Nisi's MC-UV are comparable to all of the larger brands hands down, and at this price it's a steal.

Remembering that this is an ultra-thin MC-UV filter. The grading of the transmittance is the same if not better than that of the larger brands: http://www.nisidigital.com/en/nisi/show/81d469f1-70fc-cf44-c…

If that doesn't matter to you then by all means go for the $3.72 filter. It's definitely cheaper in price, but who wants a $3.72 filter protecting their $2000 lens? :)

      Thanks,
      Rob

  • UV filters are utterly pointless if you're shooting digital, irrespective of the filter quality.

    • Their main point is protection of your lens, as the store rep has already mentioned several times. The aim is physical protection of the glass with minimal interference to the image, hence their suggestion that better quality filters are worth the price if you have expensive lenses.

      • Front elements are FAR tougher than a filter, so all you're doing is increasing the chances of damage by using a very smashable filter. The only time you'd want to use one is in very dusty/sea-spray-type environs, or if it's needed to fully weatherseal the lens (in conditions that actually require it) IF it's a lens that needs a filter to do so (ie Canon 16-35, etc.).

Other than that, you are conning yourself (or being conned) if you think they "add protection". That's one of the reason we use lens hoods.

        • Not sure about increasing the chance of damage but otherwise all valid points, however many pros still prefer to use a filter for the non-scratch peace of mind. It's an ongoing debate as you're no doubt aware. ;)
