The Age Online just lost a reader

did anyone notice that the age website has put a restriction on the number of articles you can read for free per month, i guess $30?

I am a regular reader of age and now they want me to subscribe in order to read the articles..
Not interessted in this anymore… AFR does a similar thing..

What would you do - pay or switch to another site?
I am looking for alternatives… now

Any browser in porn-mode should do the trick ;)

  • Sydney Morning Herald has most of the same articles.
I also tend not to have a limit when I use "The Age RSS" app on my phone (android). I don't know if there is a Chrome app or program for this for the PC though.

    • I just remove all cookies on my PC. That gives you another 30 articles to read or use one of their other sites to read the article.

    That's not the Ozbargain spirit….

A quick search on ozbargain for "The Age" revealed the following posts about ways (hacks) to read the newspapers online without paying for the subscription.

Pick whatever option suits you and enjoy :)

The Herald Sun have a limit on how many articles you can view too (although again there are ways around it). Not sure why anyone would pay to read that though, 90% of the articles these days are taken from twitter or facebook, or other newspapers (mostly the Huffington Post).

Most HS articles can be read free if you change the URL from heraldsun.com.au to news.com.au and keep the rest of the URL

  • Just use incognito.

…or just pay for the service that you're using.

      You must be new here.

      • No, I'm just here for bargains, not free-rides.

Not that I would ever pay them a subscription (that should be an affront to any self respecting OzBargainer) but I'm curious, if you do have a subscription do they still bombard you with their ads, including those ones that fill your screen and block what you were trying to read? I'll bet they do, which stinks of double dipping the revenue streams to me. Kind of like Foxtel and their ads…..

+1, Danielburn. The ads don't disappear with a subscription, afaik. Precisely why I refuse to pay for a subscription since the ads are incredibly annoying and aggressive (things popping up, floating while you scroll, covering articles etc until you close them… videos auto playing on occasion etc. It's a PITA).

Easiest way to get around this is using adblock plus.
Go to options>customize>Manually edit your filters> and then add " ||fairfax.com.au^ " (without quotes)

  • I use private browsing to surf the news sites :)

If you're using Firefox, hit ctrl+shift+P. Enjoy your endless news browsing!

  • people read articles on aus newspapers? why?

  • These paywalls are evil. The solution - don't visit their site, EVER (even if hiding/incognito). They rely on readership for advertising dollars. So they need YOU.

Much better alternatives (all free, no fees or restrictions):

    ABC News
    The Guardian
    AP Mobile (app)
