[Hack] Free Online Access to The Age/SMH

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Not sure if this is a deal per se but it's very handy!

Simply install the SMH or The Age Paywall blocker into Chrome and hey presto, no more stupid popup telling you you've read 10 out of 10 free articles for the month!

  • hack, besides dev himself says doesn't work anymore.

    • The Age definitely works

SMH one works too. But it's easier to just use Incognito/Private Browsing/Porn Mode.

I know this is Ozbargain and all but, quality journalism isn't free. If you're thinking advertising makes it up, probably not as they reported a net loss after tax of $16.4 million last FY.

HuffPo seems to do alright for a free service! Not our fault Fairfax is a poorly run organisation.

      • I stand corrected, it seems HuffPo hasn't turned a profit in 3 years.

Perhaps The Guardian is a better example.

        • Guardian Media Group exists to support the core purpose of its owner, Scott Trust Limited: to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity, but in the 2011/12 year the group lost £75.6 million, and for the three years up to June 2012, the paper itself lost £100,000 a day - leading Intelligent Life magazine to question whether The Guardian can survive. @Bargain4U The Guardian actually made a tidy (£22.7 million) profit last financial year, but that's coming off a string of losses as your quote mentions: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-16/guardian-media-retu…

It remains to be seen if their business model is viable, but the signs are promising. :)

        • Profitable or not, the HuffPo model is pump out a flood of SEO'ed clickbait, unpaid contributions and quackery with the occasional piece of quality journalism. If Fairfax would have to go further down that route to remain "free", then I hope to hell the paywall model is a success.

      Neither is this rubbish.

Not sure if this is a deal per se

Probably belongs in the forums, if it belongs on OzBargain at all.

Alternatively, since you're linking to a chrome extension anyway, you could just open up a new 'private' (incognito) window.

    • pretty much - this has been around since day 1

  • If you delete the cookies for theage and smh when you get a warning message, hey presto they disappear as they use cookies to monitor how many articles you read. Plus other smaller fairfax sites like WAtoday and BrisbaneTimes arent paywalled but still get all the articles that the other two get.

Ctl + Shift + Porn works fine on Firefox :)

The Age website is just so terrible I figure they never want me to read it anyway.

  • What about the mobile site??

For Firefox/Chrome, you can make a small change, set and forget, no addons etc required.

    Firefox:
    - Right click on page -> View Page Info -> Permissions -> Under 'Set Cookies', untick 'Use Default' then set it to block.

    Chrome:
    - Right click on page -> View Page Info -> "Show cookies and site data" -> Find the domain name(s) of the site you're on and click block.

    • Brilliant, thanks!

  • Um, just something easier I found for SMH. No settings to be changed: when you click the link, just quickly press 'stop' before the pop up says you can't view any more articles for the month without subscription.
