FREE: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube Access on Xbox One/360 (Live Membership Not Required) Save ~$5/Mth

621

Xbox One and Xbox 360 will drop the requirement for an Xbox Live paid membership to access services like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube.

Until now, if you've wanted to watch Netflix on your Xbox you've needed to cough up for Live as well. That's another $5 a month (at least) for the privilege of enjoying your existing subscriptions, something that never really sat well with many consumers.

To compliment its efforts on the media front, Microsoft is also bringing Games with Gold and Deals with Gold to the Xbox One in early June. That means free games every month and steep discounts on titles like Ryse: Son of Rome.

You'll need to use a geo-blocking service such as Unotelly, Unblock-us or Getflix before you sign up. More info here: http://m.ps4.mmgn.com/articles--how-to-get-netflix-in-austra…

  • +7

About time too. Utter BS that they charge you to use other services.

    • +4

Surely using Internet Explorer was worth the Gold membership though? :D

Nice one tightarse — thanks for the heads up!

  • do you still need a netflix subscription?

    • +2

      Yes, you do.

"Until now, if you've wanted to watch Netflix on your Xbox you've needed to cough up for Live as well."

I think the "FREE: Netflix," in the title is a bit misleading.

        • Yeah life gets confusing if you only read parts of sentences.

  • Price on title TA - You should know the rules by now ;)

    • +1

Changed. Was half asleep when I posted at 5am. Cheers mate.

    • its free why need price?

      • +1

Didn't even have free in the original title. All good now I hope.

        • +3

To be honest, I feel like in this case putting "FREE" in the title makes it more confusing.

You are not getting anything for free here - you are simply having an unnecessary barrier removed from paid services that are still paid.

seems more like an announcement, not really a bargain

  • +3

Netflix is great - stopped my torrenting by ~80%.

  • +3

    I wouldn't say this is a bargain.

    • It's definately a bargain if you were buying gold specifically for the purpose ( as I did)

  • +6

I think this should belong in the forums.

    • +5

I’m happy this was published here as I may not have seen it in the forums.

Instead of grabbing another WDTV Live box I had previously considered an Xbox 360 for the kids playroom to add another Netflix point in our home, but when I learned it was $5 a month just to use the app through the Xbox I back away from it.

We already have a PS3 in another room so I figured why not add an Xbox to the mix and have another platform in the home.

If I can grab an Xbox 360 sub-$100 I may go this way after all – or perhaps I should just grab another PS3 and then the games library we already have can be used in there instead of purchasing new titles for Xbox. PS3 prices just don’t seem to be coming down in any big way!

    • +1

      Exactly.

If Netflix etc was only avaliable on xbox I would understand, but its available everywhere.

This isn't a bargain and its a PSA that only applies to those with xboxes.

      • Same applies to xBox/PS3/Wii Games bargains which are for those who owns a these or even for Android/iPhone deals.
Users can select "Hide form Listing" to ignore deals not meant to them and move on.

        • +2

That isn't the same at all, you can buy those games, this is just a change to Microsoft's online service.

  • Do any of these services have TV series that are up to date? (like showing Game of Thrones when/soon after its shown in America). Been keen to get onto one of them but haven't gotten around to it!

Also got an xbox 360 which would help with this deal :)

    • +1

Hulu does but only for Network shows (and a few other things like the Daily Show/Colbert Report).

For Game of Thrones you'll need access to HBO Go (netherlands I believe lets you subscribe without having a cable account).

      • Cool, I'll read more into Hulu then. Thanks for the information.

      • Just tried this and got stuck on the coupon code, know any way to get past this?

    • +1

Doesn't seem to be up-to-date. I think Netflix is still a season behind on Walking Dead (for example).

But there are good Netflix commissioned series like, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

      • +1

Depends on what you mean by 'up to date'. As I said network shows (ie CBS, NBC, CW, ABC etc) have episodes up on Hulu the night they air. There are also a few cable shows (the only ones I watch are Daily Show and Colbert Report from the Comedy Channel though).

You wont see most cable content - eg Walking Dead or Game of Thrones on Hulu.

Netflix is more like the old video store. Movies and shows appear much later but at least they carry cable content.

Personally I subscribe to both of them as they have different uses and buy UV codes from people who buy the DVD/Blurays but dont want the codes for $3-5 and watch them through Vudu.

But I find myself watching Hulu more than Netflix.

        • Hi

I have never heard of buying UV codes. That sounds like a great idea.

Where are the best places to buy?

          Thanks

Thank you very much for this post. Glad it wasn't in the forums or I wouldn't have noticed it.

  • $498 for the Kinect-less Xbone now as well. PS4's overpriced Aussie price point is now as stark as ever. Roll on an E3 price drop!

Big night/morning for pretty significant Xbone announcements. Wonder what they saved for E3?

  • Good move there for Microsoft but wrong move taking out kinect for xb1

  • will drop the requirement for an Xbox Live paid membership

So when will this happen? Start date on the deal please.

  • Hmmm i should check if NBA Game Time can be used now without the need for xbox live gold

  • +2

About time - I would never buy another MS BOX due to this policy of requiring xBox live for third party apps.

The only one that would work was ABC iView.
So now I should be able to use SBS On Demand, Ten Play, YouTube etc.

    Like I said, about time.

  • Thanks for posting this. I currently use both Hulu and Netdlix through my PS3 but now I can have this through the Xbox in a different room. I wouldn't have seen this if weren't in the forum and I nearly gave in a forked out for gold membership :)

Misleading headline. Not "Free Netflix …". Netflix is exactly the same price it ever was, you just don't need to get Live to get it. Not a bargain. Not a deal. Just a policy change.

      Hi Rick.

In what way is it misleading? Haven't tried to mislead anyone, and have absolutely no reason to do so.

My original post had this title (check revisions):

Netflix, Hulu, YouTube Open to All on Xbox One & 360 (Live Membership No Longer Required)

I then changed it as I was asked to include a price, both in this thread, and via a couple of PMs. The new title clearly states that access is free, not the service. Guess you can't make everyone happy all the time. Best regards. TA.

FREE: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube Access on Xbox One/360 (Live Membership Not Required) Save ~$5/Mth

      • I think what Rick is trying to say is that access can be seen many different ways, I access my Netflix account with a username and password, but also access it from my browser.

When I first saw the deal I was amazed, thinking that Netflix, Hulu, etc (as in their library) was free to access (watch) on Xbox 360/Xbone.

Free access to Netflix? AWESOME! Let's GO!

Oh hang on .. it's not free access to Netflix. They just changed the policy about having to have a Live subscription. Not a bargain.

        • +1

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but obviously the masses agree it is a bargain.

        • Free access to pay for Netflix then. Previously you had to pay to pay for Netflix.

Though if you were paying $60 a year just to pay some more for Netflix, you're not making the most of your Gold subscription. If you weren't doing any online gaming with it, I wouldn't have recommended Gold.

  • I had no idea they charged for Youtube.. Wow.

They still require gold for subscription MMOs and free to play games that require online btw.

  • +1

MS finally reversed an idiotic policy. I guess they got there, eventually.

  • +1

It's not til June. I came home and found dissapoint.

    • What date? 1st June?

      • When will this policy be available on Xbox One and Xbox 360?

These changes will become available on both platforms in June 2014. Please check back to the FAQ for the latest updates and timing.

  • you still need to join netflix, isnt it? i recently cancelled netflix membership.

  • Waiting, waiting, waiting.

Well it is due on the 1st.
