XFX AMD Radeon R9 290 $429 PP @ ShoppingExpress

90

It is a video card for computers, it is cheap.

Edit:
computeralliance also has it for the same price, they're all reference models.

      • Hi Rep,

I'd really like to order a pair of R9 290's for crossfire but the maximum quantity is one.

Any chance of changing the max quantity to two?

        Thanks

In addition, I've added the 1TB W.D 2.5" HDD and the R9 290 and I'm still being charged for postage?

        • The limit for graphics card is strictly limited to 1 per customer.
As for the postage, can you try again?

          Cheers

        • If only you knew the address and email of any other person, then they could get the second one for you…

  • Looks like a pretty good deal, but for those interested in reference design cards, might be useful to here what reviewers have said. Seems like the cards throttle down due to heat and can be loud.

Owner of a ref model here; works just fine, not really noisy unless you run benchmarks and unrestrict the fan speed.

The only caveat is that if you run incredibly intensive games it may throttle instead of making lots of noise, so you can pick one or the other. (It throttles marginally to keep the temperatures at a solid 95c).

Just 3 days after that review was published last year, AMD fixed the throttling issue some people experienced when the card was under extreme loads (usually not realised in gaming) with updated Catalyst drivers:

According to AMD, the problem was caused by improper fan settings on retail cards and imprecise tuning that relied on power modulation (PWM) rather than a specified RPM speed. As a result, the company said, some retail cards that were supposed to be spinning at 47% were actually spinning as much as 350 RPM slower — thus causing the overheat issue. Last night the company pushed a new driver that would supposedly fix this by relying on RPM tuning to set fan speeds rather than PWM manipulation.

Reference coolers might be preferred for those looking to CF two 290s, as the heat is expelled out of the rear of the case instead of circulating around inside the case.

      • It will still throttle if your case has poor ventilation though.

The reference cards pull air from inside your case so you need cool air going into it.

I just got the 3rd party cooler model instead, it dumps all the hot air inside my case and puts up my CPU by 10C :)

The benefit is much lower temps and higher clocks though.

That's what the case fans are for. Unless you have 5 HDDs behind the intake fans impeding the air flow, you should be good.

My old rig had an Antec 902 V2 with two, budget 120mm fans at the front; more than adequate for cooling my SLI 460s back in the day.

The air flow is not the reason most people avoid reference design GPUs, it's primarily because later improvements in the production & PCB design only end up in aftermarket vendor versions (the reference cards stop selling fairly quickly) and also because they don't use any better-quality components that you find in ASUS/Gigabyte GPUs, that'll handle more voltage/higher clocks.

        • You would be surprised how many people have poor airflow.

That is cheap, damn. Tempted to grab one and swap out my 6950 (flashed to 6970). You can still grab a G'byte Windforce from PCCG for $449, in case reference cooling doesn't chill your dill.

  • Good price for what it is but I can't justify buying one as my current games run fine on my $140 HD 7770.

I wish I had a excuse (and some spare money) to buy one.
