Telstra SIM Starter Packs Guide to Cheap Data

Update 28 July 2014:
Some of below information is now out-of-date. Please refer to the Telstra Pre-paid Starter Pack Guide for the latest details.

I decided to make a guide on using the Telstra prepaid starter packs that are commonly seen on sale for $10 to get 3 gigabytes or the best rate for cheap data. Which is to activate the Sim as an ipad Sim which is explained below. 3gbs of data for $10 on the Telstra network is pretty good value. The first part is just a guide on the Sim packs and generally what they work with, below that i give instructions on activating any of the Sim packs as an ipad Sim.

(Sim Pack)Multi-fit/Standard standard sim packmulti fit Sim packstandard sim
Compatible with:

  • Pre-paid Broadband devices
  • Phones
  • Android tablets

(Sim Pack)Micro Sim micro sim packmicro sim
Compatible with:

  • IPad,
  • ipad2
  • Pre-paid broadband*

(Sim Pack)Nano Sim Nano sim packnano sim
Compatible with:

  • IPad minis
  • iPad air
  • pre-paid broadband*

*Adapter needed. These can be bought on eBay for less than $1 adapter

Pre paid Broadband device may consist of these and other models:broadband devicebroadband device2broadband device3

Setup:
To activate either the Nano, Micro or multi-fit sims as an Ipad sim go to www.telstra.com.au/activate follow the prompts and make sure to activate as an ipad sim to get 3gb note this method will work with all sim packs except the standard pack.

To set up the Sim packs to get the best rate of data is to activate the Sim as an iPad Sim. But this does not mean the sim pack has to have iPad on it! To activate the sim as an ipad sim (to get 3gb) on live chat:

  1. Go to https://livechat.telstra.com
  2. Enter your details and select ‘prepaid enquiry’ from the drop down box, then click submit
  3. Now the chat is activated you may have to wait a few minutes or will get connected straight away. Simply just type that you want to activate a pre-paid iPad sim and from there the Telstra chat rep will guide you through and ask for your details, proof of id and the sim serial and service number. (these can be found on the back of the pack beside the barcode)
  4. The chat will finish once these processes are complete and you may have to wait up to 30 minutes for 3GB of data to be activated on your sim. To use this in a prepaid broadband device you may need to use an adapter if the sim pack you activated was is stated as being for an iPad. (Micro or nano sim) but if the sim pack is a multi-fit no adapter will be needed for it to be used in a prepaid broadband device.adapter

Or alternative call Telstra on: 12 58887 and ask to activate a prepaid ipad sim.

If you are wondering why we must activate the sim cards as an iPad sim, it is because of the data rates that are associated with iPad Sims compared to pre-paid broadband Sims. Well The packs come loaded with $30 worth of credit. So upon activation an iPad sim will give 3gb (to a rate of $1.00=100mb’s) or the iPad recharge rates $30 will get you 3 gigabytes compared to $30 on prepaid broadband will only get you 700 megabytes.

The best pack of the 3 to get is obviously the multi-fit because these wont need an adapter but an adapter is cheap and incredibly easy to use so if the store only has ipad sims left no stress you will just need to use an adapter. Telstra cannot tell if you activate an iPad sim but use it in a broadband device so use this above method to get 3gb’s of data for only $10 if you buy these packs on sale for $10.

so perhaps this guide can get linked into 'hot' deals on $10 sims to provide clarity.

EDIT 1.1- thanks to BruceFromaustraliafor the knowledge and testing of activating online without using chat.

    Great post thanks!

How does this work in terms of continuing service? Do you just recharge again at the same rates or must you get a new SIM - I'm unclear on this?

    • you can recharge recharge rates
but its alot better to buys these sims at $10. as far as i know there is no limit to how many you can have under your name as the old ones expire eventually.

      • Nice work cdaddy, many thanks. I thought you could only have 5 prepaid sims activated under your details but could be wrong there??

        • There are many stories about number of SIMs, depending who you talk to. Don't forget SIMs are still active for many months after last use. I have about 5 active but no longer in use. So seems to be BS.

Australia Post refused to sell me more than 1 Starter Pack. Their reason - told that by Telstra, as these are starter packs, otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell recharges. They also required me to fill out a form & provide ID. Went to OfficeWorks, price matched AP, & could buy as many as I liked - without ID.

  • Much effort involved in this post. Nicely done.

  • nice. can i also use these sims in an iphone, and make a few calls/text as well as cheap data?

  • This is a great guide. Thanks heaps!

  • +1

So basically $10 for the first month (or longer?), and then $30 after that?

    • yeah or just purchase multiple packs and as soon as one Sim runs out just activate another for 3gb

      • This has been discussed previously on OzB (not least by me), but it remains my understanding that, strictly speaking, and without actual paperwork being lodged with 'The Feds', that you risk 'coming to the attention of authorities', if, at any given point in time, as an individual, you have more than five active sims.

Depending on the telco/telcos you have accounts with, sims can remain 'active' for many months after last use/recharge. Because you can't - unless things have changed since the last time I tried - port the number attached to a broadband-only sim, which would immediately cancel the previous sim, if you do the $10 Telstra sim-pack activation thing month-to-month, you will (and not even taking into account your other mobile accounts) end up in an over five active sims situation.

So, just a heads-up, that's all. People below will no doubt post of having had no difficulties with the 5+ active sims situation, and there may well be little or no enforcement in play at the federal level, but just at least be aware of the possibility, however slight, that you may end up on an 'activities to be investigated' list.

        • I have activated over 20 of these in under two years. No Feds have come to me. They're ipad sims abit different to a mobile phone sim activation

        • Personally, I'm not willing to risk it, and The Feds not having actually turned up on your doorstep doesn't really mean very much.
The rules, as I remember reading them - in relation to active sims - don't distinguish between mobile phone and data-only sims.
Mobile broadband/iPad sims can still be used with nefarious intent by people who might be inclined in that direction.

  • Thanks for the guide. I knew about the iPad SIMs and have been using them for a while now.

What I didn't know is that you could take a non-iPad SIM and still get the iPad plan on it. Cheers.

Any current offers out there? I need a new one.

No need to go through chat at least for micro/nanoSIM
(activated $10 microSIM with adapter on non-iPad).

    Just
    www.telstra.com.au/activate
(Or if you have a Telstra myaccount, activate from there - no ID entry, can track usage.)
    Enter service number
    Select device as iPad
    Confirm

Activated & online within 5 minutes.

Automatically set as iPad data service with $30 (good for up to 3GB, Google Play, transfer unused credit to another Telstra account). Can confirm data charged at less than 1c/MB.
So much simpler & faster than chat.

    • -1

but as you said that only works for the ipad branded packs. the main aim of this post was to show how to use the most common sim pack as an ipad sim to get cheap data and live chat is super easy and way quicker than phone

      • you don't need to go through chat. In the activation process it asks you what type of service you want to activate. I have don't this with a normal non-ipad sim

        • You sure? The sim serial you enter will tell the system this isn't an ipad sim thus not allowing the ipad plan to be selected?

        • We are both telling you it works. The online activation process has been changed.

From memory, during online activation you used to have a selection of devices <phone/data/tablet>. Selecting tablet gave only 700MB. If you wanted the 3GB, you could ask to change to iPad service via chat.

I can vouch for the change with the ordinary microSIM. The system knew from the service number I entered that it was a microSIM. As I had selected the device as iPad during activation, as I said, it automatically put me on the iPad microSIM service, with data at less than 1c/MB, giving 3GB for the $30 credit in my account.

I sure others will confirm this for micro & nano SIM. No need for going through chat for those & possibly multi fit pack.

          Activate online
          Enter service number
          Select iPad as device
          Confirm

When connected, check the service is set to iPad. It will verify this at the end of the activation process (showing recharges for your iPad service), shown in myaccount (takes time to add service though), or ask via chat. If it hasn't, get on chat to change. [I always used chat AFTER activation in the past.] So nothing to lose by trying.

From my memory, Telstra prepaid SIM pack T&C were set to be updated late February. [BOOST also changed its included data at that time.]

It is likely the iPad SIMs may now give $30 credit rather than a 3GB data pack. The main reason we avoided iPad SIM packs was the lack of flexibility of data against transferable credit.

        • UPDATE: Just tried activating standard size SIM online. (Cancelled) There was NO iPad device option just <phone/data/tablet>.

UPDATE: Just tried activating Multi Fit SIM online. (Cancelled) There was iPad device option <phone/data/tablet/iPad>.

Activating a micro or Multi Fit SIM (and probably nano & maybe iPad SIM) gives the additional <iPad> option. That should automatically set up the service as iPad with 3GB worth of credit.

So only if you activate a standard SIM, you will need to go the slow way via chat :-(

Advice: buy the Multi Fit SIM when on $10 special, activate online & forget about chat!

      • No cdaddy, as I said it was the (ordinary) microSIM - not the iPad microSIM. Activated online over a week ago.

Of course the iPad microSIM would automatically set up - no news there. The news is online activation has changed if you simply select iPad as the device. Pity your instructions are out of date.

Was surprised I no longer need to chat, as I have done many times before. [Had problems with chat end of last year - they would not set up microSIM as iPad service. Chatted again & set up correctly. Both times kept telling me must only be used with iPad. Had to record my agreement! Made me nervous using chat.]

[I used to set up standard SIM starter packs as iPad 3GB data service. Decided to change to microSIM, + adaptor, as it is type used in iPad, so less likely to be questioned. Besides found a stack at OW for $10 each.]

So activation had changed - no more hassles :-) Had assumed this was common knowledge on OB.
Much easier & faster. But have not tried with other Starter Packs.

  • great post… although i haven't seen them at $10 in ages… had to recharge 3gb at $30 the other day :(

    • Bugger :-(
I buy at least 6 month supply just in case :-) Bought 8 late last year.

  • Recommendation in this forum to Activate via chat is out of date, and now seems only necessary for standard size SIM pack. Activation via chat is much slower than online, and can be frustrating from 1 bad experience I had.

(But until others confirm automatic set up of iPad service when activating online, Check you are set up on an iPad service with $30 credit and charged at less than 1c/MB. You can still chat to change later.)

Advice: buy the Multi Fit SIM when on $10 special, activate online (select iPad as device) & forget about chat! (You can use any size SIM as they have the same service number.)

    • +1

i updated and gave reference. thanks

      • Thanks, I was as surprised as you ;-)
It was the work of many OBers who discovered these handy tips over quite some time.

Rare time a good deal becomes better - at least far easier to access.

Also no longer any legal agreement you have to acknowledge that service will only be used with iPad. Well I didn't notice it. CHAT recorded my verbal agreement twice last time. So I am happy to avoid the old activation process.

Hopefully users will update their experiences activating these SIM packs online.

        • im starting to think these packs wont be seen at $10 again. at $15 yes but i think Telstra has finished flexing its muscles and has gained alot of 'perceived' customers

  • yep looks like these deals may be gone

    • Too early to cry… $10 deals were available at Woolies at start of March. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/134554 Last month there were $16 & $18 online deals. I stocked up with 8 in the many December $10 deals, expecting no deals for about 6 months.

Those deals used to appear only a couple of times a year, with Australia Post, DS, Woolies, Coles, HN, & OW offering around the same time. So it appeared like $10 deals happened more regularly than they actually occurred. My guess is these $10 deals have been more common at the end of last year than previously. Just not available at the moment.

Previous Telstra Starter Pack deals: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/telstra-30-pre-paid-sim-sta… The first post was January 2012, so these deals are a recent phenomenon.

      • +1

The first post was January 2012, so these deals are a recent phenomenon.

no, i just didn't go back further to tag - which i now have to 2010 :)

interestingly, the whirlpool thread also started in 2012

        • Thanks. That deal predates me on OzBargain.

    • Was advised those deals were designed to absorb the Kogan crowd after they went belly up. Might explain why there hasn't been a $10 deal for ages.

      • These $10/15 deals have been running for 27 months, with the latest $10 deal less than 6 weeks back - which is not ages.

I have learnt to stock up as it can be up to 6 months between $10 deals, over the last 15 months I have been using these for cheap data. So 6 weeks since last deal is not long.

Certainly not tied to the demise of Kogan, but Telstra would have been smart to promote more Starter Pack deals at that stage.

These sales are to attract NEW business to Telstra. Timing is to suit Telstra profits, not us.

      • Might explain why there hasn't been a $10 deal for ages.

This would seem a better analysis.

Stats from the past deals link above:
There have been many more discount deals posted at the start of this year, than by this time in in previous years & double number of $10 deals (only 1 posted 2013, 1 in 2012 both $10).

        2014 7 discount deals posted 2 @$10
(That is in the same proportion to all the 2013 deals, just less $10 deals.)

        2013 20 discount deals posted 10 @$10
(Mainly 12 in 3 months between August & October - Kogan related deals?, leaving 8 deals in the other 9 months,& only 1 before 13/5) There was even 1 @$5 with conditions.

        2012 2 discount deals posted 2 @$10

Also handy for low use phone.
Activate as LONG LIFE (6 month), then change to Simplicity (15c/min calls with no flagfall, giving 200 minutes on the $30 credit
    - effectively 5c/min calls for 6 months!).

At the end of 6 months, port to Yatango www.yatango.com.au/freetrial (FREE 600min calls, 600 SMS, 1GB for 30 days & FREE SIM posted out - only first time for new customers, otherwise should still port free), & then port to new Telstra Starter Pack. Otherwise use a $2 SIM to port out & back to Telstra. That preserves the phone number. I have kept mine for over 10 years.

Transfer Unused credit between Telstra accounts (data or phone) via Telstra's Credit2u. When changing between data/phone Starter Packs, I transfer unused credit (less 25c fee, $10 max per transfer) to other phone/data credit. That is, I keep another Starter Pack SIM in credit anytime I am stopping use of expiring SIM. My PHONE SIM is activated for 6 months, allowing many DATA SIM credit to be transferred. When that PHONE SIM credit expires, there will be an active DATA SIM to transfer credit to.

If need more calls in a month, activate (an additional) Starter Pack as a $220 CAP (about 200 min of expensive calls), and transfer most of the unused $30 credit to one of my accounts (tops up data with 2.9GB, or phone with 60 min of calls). FREE CALLS 6pm-6am. Handy to have spare/dual-SIM phone for extra phone SIM.

    • For cheap longer calls to landlines I use VOIP with Pennytel (free account with my stored credit, 8c untimed calls). Consumes 1MB/min = 1c/min on these $10 data SIMs, or use free WiFi. (i make 8c untimed calls to Australian landlines from free WiFi when overseas.)

    • Hi brucefromaustralia, are you saying that you're able to transfer credit from the iPad only sim cards via Credit2U? I didn't think it was possible for those as Credit2U asks for a dollar amount and recognises iPad sim cards as having zero balance.

      • That's the whole point of this post - installing a $30 credit Starter Pack as an iPad service, gives you $30 credit.

Your iPad service balance is given as a $ amount, not as GB. If you just want 3GB buy the less flexible (but this may have changed) iPad Starter Pack.

Unused credit can be transferred to another Telstra account or used to buy Apps etc on Googleplay etc.

    • How did you make it 5c/min for 6 month? Call charges are 15c/min, isn't it?

Also thanks for this handy post n explanation. Is there anyway to get cheap data on simplicity plan?

      • You buy $30 credit when Starter Packs are $10, so the 15c/min is bought at 5c/min. On Simplicity, data is 10c/MB (from memory), so costs you 3.3c this way. (I use a Pocket WiFi for data on my phone & PC.)

        • Excellent. Thanks.

    • Posting this on FREE 1GB Yatango data.

Currently between Starter Packs for phone (porting number via Yatango, using FREE calls & txt for 30 days), and data Starter Pack just expired.

    • Forgot to add…
Top up with credit4u from another Telstra account when account is near expiry will give up to 14 day extension!

So a 30 day iPad account may last 44 days with an additional 9.8GB when $10 is transferred with credit4u.

Use credit4u again before that expiry for up to extra 14 days. Similarly with credit on phone accounts.

      • Error: with an additional 0.98GB when $10 is transferred
        And it's Credit2u

  • And another free thing to do… 1 month free Foxtel (can use credit to subscribe after that). May be able to set up new account for each new SIM to get many months viewing, but I have not tested! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144212

  • Whirlpool forum on cheap Telstra Starter Packs

  • CreditMe2u update: transferring credit from phone ($30 Starter Pack bought for $10) to "iPad" SIM did not work on phone (#100#).

Rang Telstra & told of CreditMe2u problem. They transferred $10 (extra 1GB) without 25c fee. I asked about expiry date & was given 30 days! Second time I have received better outcome by phoning. Last time I transferred more than the usual maximum $10.

(Normally expiry is extended to a total of 14 days if less than 14 days at time of CreditMe2u. So best to transfer on last day for longest expiry. eg CreditMe2u with 13 days left only gains 1 day extension)

So a manual transfer is likely to better preserve your credit & give longer expiry.

Activating (an additional) Starter Pack as a 30 day Encore $220 CAP (about 200 min of expensive calls but FREE calls & SMS 6pm-6am), can then transfer all $30 credit to "iPad" SIM (for 3GB for more than 30 days) or other phone (on 15c/min call Longlife-then-changed-to-Simplicity plan).
For more discussion of this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/149772#comment-2065843

  • Is it possible to some how convert the entire $30 credit onto the Google PLAYSTORE so its sitting there, (like Itunes balances?)

And in doing so, not having to worry about an expiry date? 6months after activating the long life service?

    thanks in advance.

  • UPDATE

Only buy the White $30 Starter Pack from now on.

Telstra got sick of people raping and abusing the IPAD Offer and you will not get the 3gb data anymore:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153459#comment-2128308

    • Thanks for the update, CONFIRMED - White still gives 3GB https://www.telstra.com.au/online-shop/tablet-product.cfm?fl…

      But a $30 Recharge only gives 2GB!

This reduction to 2GB is just in line with the reduction by BOOST & other providers. Pity :-(

I'm transferring credit to my iPad plan today, so will post later how much a $10 CreditMe2u gets me.

    • Telstra got sick of people raping and abusing the Ipad prepaid offer!

Nice theory, but not backed up by Telstra's recent actions.

Recently (about last month) Telstra made activation of Micro & Nano SIMs as iPad very easy - just click iPad as "device". You used to have to call/chat to set up those Packs. If Telstra was sick of abuse, making any abuse easier would be the last thing they would do.

White iPad Starter Packs come with a 3GB Data Pack. (If you don't use the 3GB, you lose it. It has no $ value to transfer or buy Apps etc. That's why they weren't popular on OzBargain.) They still come with that 3GB Data Pack, but the $30 Recharge is now only worth 2GB. (BOOST reduced its included 3GB to 2GB in February.)

When activating a different Starter Pack for use on iPad plan, the included credit is a $30 $ amount rather than the 3GB Data Pack of the White Starter Pack. (That means you can use credit to transfer or buy Apps etc. Recharging should roll over credit, unlike Data Packs.) That credit Recharges at the rate of the iPad RECHARGE. That activation process has not changed - $30 credit still goes on your account, but the iPad RECHARGE rate has increased - buying only 2GB.

  • +1

So if you have a Starter Pack connected now with old 3GB, don't let it expire - use CreditMe2u to transfer credit at old data rate (<1c/MB) & keep it active!!

"The data rate per MB (charged per KB) is determined by your most recent recharge denomination" Telstra

So theoretically you could stay on old 3GB iPad Plan as long as you transfer with CreditMe2u before access period expires!

For an explanation of how this works see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141035#comment-2099336

  • Hope these updates are helpful in this time of unfortunately rising mobile data charges on many carriers.

  • ^^^ i would edit these changes in but can no longer edit the thread :(

    • Contact MODs (Report) & you can edit - really needs an update.

Luckily I am still on old 3GB iPad plan - kept alive with CreditMe2u topups every 14 days at the end of access period ;-)

      • +1

Put a report in early this morning asking for editing rights or for a mod to edit in the changes. No word yet

    • Forum threads can't be edited by OP after 14 days. If you want this to be a guide that is kept up-to-date, perhaps consider starting a wiki page instead?

  • Anyone know if I can exchange my unopened pink multi fit starter kit bought at Woolies for the white Ipad one? Will the white Ipad nan sim work with my mobile (only after data, not calls)? Thanks.

    • Ask at Telstra Shop. Woolies may exchange with receipt if they stock iPad Starter Pack.

The DATA SIM will work with a phone for internet access (I'm posting on that setup - using a Vodafone $9 3GB DATA SIM from Coles deal a few days back, on a 4G phone).

BUT, Telstra may detect you are not using it in an iPad. If they do, you will be effectively charged $2/MB which means only 15MB of data!!

  • Does the following setup still work post July 2014? Cheers.

    Setup:
To activate either the Nano, Micro or multi-fit sims as an Ipad sim go to www.telstra.com.au/activate follow the prompts and make sure to activate as an ipad sim to get > 3gb note this method will work with all sim packs except the standard pack.

To set up the Sim packs to get the best rate of data is to activate the Sim as an iPad Sim. But this does not mean the sim pack has to have iPad on it! To activate the sim as an ipad sim (to get 3gb) on live chat:

    Go to https://livechat.telstra.com
Enter your details and select ‘prepaid enquiry’ from the drop down box, then click submit
