I have posted this previously, but the price has dropped significantly according to CamelCamelCamel.

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Intel-D54250WYK-DisplayPort-Graph…

I used www.xe.com for the currency conversion. Probably cheaper with a 28 Degrees card.

Cheapest on Static Ice is $439.00 so this is quite a saving.

You just need to add your own Ram, Wireless & Bluetooth (in one) and an mSATA SSD. Super easy to put together. You will need to purchase a 3 prong c5 power cord (aka laptop cord). Power consumption is very low. Fits in your hand.

    Freaking AWESOME!
I have been hanging out for a decent price on these.
    THANK YOU OP!!

    EDIT:
I wish its bigger brother http://www.amazon.com/Intel-DisplayPort-Graphics-i5-4250U-BO… was available to Australia. It seems it wont ship due (I think) to being the "1" model with a US power cord.
I initially talked myself into getting this one as it can take a2.5" hard drive as well as the SSD but the prices are no-where near as good (an it wont ship)

  • Seems a pretty decent price for the i5.

If you don't need that cpu grunt though, the celeron ones that have been on ozbargain a few times seem to include a lot more value. The bluetooth/wifi card is included, and the sales here usually bundle a cheap stick of 4gb with them (plus the new celeron models include a power cord). eg: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/134824

FYI, this is the MSATA model. The 2.5" model is more expensive.
    http://www.amazon.com/Intel-DisplayPort-Graphics-i5-4250U-BO…

  • For those planning to buy one, you also have to buy the power cable as its not included. I got one in Australia, and no power cord.

  • Question for OZB tech-heads: I have the H version (taller - fits mSATA and 2.5" HDD. Would the 2.5" Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB Portable fit inside after removing the case?

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FRHTSK4/ref=ox_sc_sfl_ti…

    • I believe the slim drive is 9.5mm when removed from enclosure so should fit in the NUC's 2.5" bay.

      • Thanks, that was my understanding.

        • It appears to have a standard sata connector as well, so it should be good to go.

  • Will this be OK for running tax software and general use? I'm guessing yes, but just hoping someone can confirm.

    • +5

      Absolutely!

I would hazard a guess to say the Celeron NUC would do that without any sweat for half the price.

      • I'd go the cheaper Celeron, too

      • +1

Maybe meet halfway ang get the i3 one?
        Will want some forward compatibility.

        • Yeah I would probably do the I3 personally. The Windows 7 drivers for the Celeron are still lacking especially in the 32 bit arena.

        • I've been charged with getting the mother in law a new pc for work she does at home (as an accountant). I like the idea of this little unit, but I'm just worried I might be missing some limitation which she might run into down the track (lack of USB ports is the main thing I can think of).

My mum retired and wanted a new PC. She wanted small, quiet; with web, email, MS office.

I grabbed a celeron nuc with 4gb ram. Bought a 120gb SSD, installed windows 8.1. She says it runs like a dream. There were drivers to install and it all worked within an hour or so. 1 USB port at the back has a Logitech unifying receiver. The other has her printer (I tried to set up WiFi for her as her printer is WiFi compatible, but she doesn't like "the beams" sigh).

The front USB3 port is free to take her USB sticks for photo backups.

        • The Celeron version has 3 USB ports, the I3 and above have 4 ports. For general office type work any of the NUC's should provide ample resources.

The Celeron version has HDMi connector for video and the I3/I5 have mini display port. So depending on the monitor you have you just need to make sure you have the right cable/converter.

        • i3 and i5 have 2x USB3 on the front and 2x USB2 on the back.

    • +1

Easy! I use mine for general browsing, youtube, streaming video and photo editing (not Photoshop). Ploughs through everything for me. You can also mount it to the back of your monitor - it' tiny.

      • Which model do you have?
Any pitfalls or recommendations you have found?
What was the completed cost with all the extras?

More $ than required, but I keep stuff for ages and didn't want to upgrade components later plus no waiting time.

Pros: Low power, tiny, 20 sec boot, highly portable, quiet, ease of build
Cons: Probably specs per/$ compared to a laptop (depends on needs)

  • Nice price

  • Hi all, I am a newbie with these NUC's, so sorry for stupid Questions here. First is does it use the same RAM as normal desktop PC's? and second do you just install Windows on it like a normal PC? Thanks

    • +1

No - they use laptop memory (SODIMMs)

    • +1

No to the RAM - must be low powered - 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 1600Mhz (notebook). Windows 7 or 8.1 install from USB or USB DVD.

  • This gen use the lower voltage rams and they are harder to source compare to older notebook rams with higher voltage.
The msata version is smaller but don't have the ability to put normal Sata drives in it.

The best deal is the older gen 3217 seeries that cost little over 220 aud.

  • Is it possible to install VMWare ESX across a couple and cluster them for a home lab?

    • wow! Corsair Mac Memory Dual Channel DDR3L SODIMM Memory Kit - 16GB is around $290 - oops!

  • Just for another newbie with the NUCs, why would someone buy this instead of a normal laptop.?

    • Easy, I use a much larger monitor than my laptop. It also sits at eye level and I can have the monitor further away - much better posture . Finally, I always have to move the keyboard temporarily to do paperwork. It really depends on your needs, for me it's space and comfort. I have other laptops and an ipad.

      • But you need to bother with installing the OS, the RAM, peripherals etc. I still don't get why you won't buy a normal laptop

        • On a laptop the keyboard is attached to a small screen. After prolonged use this arrangement hurts my neck and eyes. It takes less than 10 minutes to put together. My laptop has footprint 6 times bigger, however this is attached behind my monitor.

  • Anybody know who's doing the Celeron cheap atm (preferably with a 4GB SODIMM)? - I've got to buy 20 of them…!

    • +1

Shopping Express have posted plenty of deals, try them. Negotiate!

    • Inbox me, I was planning on doing a nuc deal shortly anyway

      • Ill keep an eye out for one.
