User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

Comments

        • @scotty: yes I would have/did , post the deal without it, and only later realised about the $10 referrers deal so looked up the OZB rules and added it.

Like I said, I just won't be posting deals for them in future. No biggy.
And props to such a great site you have! Wish I knew how you did it so i could make one for another idea I have (not deals)

  • Hi Scotty

Is 'bang good' not part of referrals?

    Cheers

    • From Banggood's Refer A Friend, it seems to leak referrer's email address.

      • Thanks for that. Didn't realise it.

      • I just tried adding in BangGood's referral program which has been updated to only show user ids on registering and not the email address. However Ozbargain system automatically detected referral id and unpublished the comment.

        Please add it in.

  • Please add referral links for CurrencyFair.
Edit - Referrer and referee each get a free transfer

    • Generally if a store doesn't have any deals posted on OzBargain we won't consider them as there is no benefit in having the referral system on the most part without deal posts. We don't want to add every referral program, just ones relevant to our members. Should deal posts begin for this site we can certainly reconsider it though. Thanks!

      • Hi - Can OzB reconsider CurrencyFair.
Referers and Referees now receive free transfer and 15 Euros.
        "
When your friend uses CurrencyFair, you'll both get €15 and a free transfer added to your accounts!
        "

        Got to be a bargain…!?

        Referral Link looks like this:
        https://www.currencyfair.com/?channel=XXXXXX

        • But again, no one has posted a deal for them

    • Dacs, can you send me your referral so I can get my first transfer free? Thanks!

      • Done. I'm happy to refer anyone else who needs it.

  • Please add AwardWallet.
Referee gets premium upgrade for 6 months. Referrer gets an upgrade after 5 people have signed up using that referral code.

    • Yeah same thing with this one and I don't think that's the type of site that would be posted on OzBargain at all. No deals posted. Thanks

  • Just added BitGold to the randomised system. Currently Australian referrers and referees can get 0.5g of gold each. BitGold is a listed company in Canada and allows you to pay for goods or services using gold that they have reserved.

    Received an email:

I was earlier trying out the delivery hero referral code $7 off thing they have going but when I tried to click through a few times I noticed that it came up as the links were expired. I have since ordered and got a code myself and noticed that they have an expiry of about a month, is it possible for you to change it so that the codes are removed after a certain amount of time so people don't have to click through and hope they get an unexpired one? I noticed theres over 400 in the system.

Maybe we'll start implementing auto-expiry on some of the referrals here for cases here?

    • Yes please expire delivery hero referral codes that are more than a month old or parse their website to see if it's expired. You could even regenerate the referral codes each month so users don't have to do it themselves. Either that or just drop delivery hero from the referral system, it's stupid that they expire codes, don't they want referrals?

  • It would be helpful if we knew someone used my referral, just so I can check if I got a credit/bonus for a site, otherwise it may expire not knowing I had it,
    it would be so helpful.

    • Unfortunately someone clicked is different from someone used it. We only track how many clicks your referral link is getting, but unable to track whether the person clicked through actually signs up an account.

      • Just to know if my referral was clicked, that's all,
'A Ozbarginer has clicked your referral for *****',
I know its up to the user if they follow through or not, thats fine,
Then I could check if I got a bonus or not,
I'm sure Ozbarginers have missed out on bonus money not knowing their link was used,
That's against everything Ozbargin stands for !!!
        Knowledge is power,
        I live in hope.

          This info is already there.

My Account - edit - referral

          Underneath each referral code entry

          Last Updated: xx/xx/xxxx
          Clicks: xx
          Last Click: xx/xx/xxxx - xx:xx

  • Please add GoCatch. Many deals on here.

    • GoCatch only have codes not links.

      • indeed, sorry I should have read harder. The title does have the word "code" in it though ;)

  • Guys
For Amaysim, should I click on referral once buying a sim or when I want to activate my sim?

    • +1

      Buying.

However, you may want to check out the cashback deals as you may be better off depending on what service you are signing up for.

      • But once I use a random referred link, this page ( http://imgur.com/bhQIkDE ) comes up and then if I choose "show me the plan", the link is changing and the refer code doesn't exist any more in address bar . Is referral still working if I use the same tab of explorer?

        • It should put a cookie in your system to detect the referral.

  • A request! Getflix has just started up an affiliate program :)

    • Affiliate programs are not allowed on OzBargain. For one thing it requires you to advertise on your own website.

This post is for "refer a friend" style referral programs.

      • Sorry, scotty - bit of a derp there. Didn't realise there was a distinction between referral and affiliate links. I do now!

  • Please add Teabox :)
    URL: http://www.teabox.com/refer-a-friend
Benefit for referee: $34 AUD voucher
Benefit for referrer: $34AUD off first order

Sorry not sure if I've done this right. I've just received my first teabox and it's divine, want to get some more :)

  • Could you also add the URL parameter for Rebtel starting with w.reb.tel
    Mine was showing
    http://w.reb.tl/ (referral code)

    • It's now fixed. Unfortunately rebtel changed their referral pattern and the those who put in their referral code that does not start with k6.c. are removed.

  • Not sure if mentioned before but looks like living social now has a referral deal. For each friend you refer, you get $5 credit when they make a purchase.
    http://livingsocial.com.au/referral

    No bonus for referee

Referral link is in the form: http://livingsocial.com.au/r/uu1234567

    • Yes we'll be looking at LivingSocial. They have been sold to AussieCommerce earlier this year and is changing a few things.

    • +1

LivingSocial Australia's referral is now ready.

  • Winemarket is now providing referrals… just received an email with referral link in the form: https://promo.winemarket.com.au/winemarket-shout-your-mates?… (where 123456 is the unique referral code).

Details from the email are below…

    Turn friendships into free wine!

Share the link below, we'll shout your mates $25 WineMarket spending money, and for every $50 they spend, you rack up $5 for yourself!

You know how good our deals are, let your mates in on the (delicious) secret and earn up to $500 for yourself. Win–win! Earn credit up until October 30, then we'll send you a >voucher!

Yes they might tag you on Facebook at the pub when you were supposed to be "having a quiet one," or promise it's "just a couple of boxes" to move, but treat 'em anyway!

Mod - can this be added to the list of stores offering referrals?

    • Is the referral link only received in email and can't be retrieve from WineMarket's website?

      • It was emailed to me as a current WineMarket customer. I don't think you can retrieve it from WM's website.

  • Please update https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/deliveryhero.com.au , they changed the referral reward to 10% off instead of $7 off.

    http://deliveryhero.referralcandy.com/

They email you the 10% off code after someone orders using your referral code. The referral codes expire after one month but you can generate a new one.

    • Done. That makes the new referral offer worse than what was before though.

      • I agree, most of my orders are well below $30. I've only ever ordered from DH when I can get at least $10 off. First time users are better off using the eat10 code to get $10 off.

The random list is full of many expired referral links.

      • Should we maybe scrap dh referral links because of the 1 month validity?

        • +1

We are pushing out an update this week where we can set the expiry date for the referrals. For example code will be removed after a month + sending a notification. It would be useful for DH and the current ING Direct referral.

  • Please add Hey You Beat the Q:

    URL: http://www.beattheq.com/register/xxxxxxxx
Benefit for referee: (Free coffee after your first purchase, I think? I missed the message…)
Benefit for referrer: free coffee after referee makes their first order

    • How does one get the unique referral ID?

      • Sorry, by signing up to the app and going to the refer a friend/cafe tab in the menu.

        • Alright. BeatTheQ has been added.

        • @scotty:

The referrals are via beattheq.com (their old name/app).
Their new app and website is HeyYou.com.au

So I guess the referrals should show on both domains?

        • @neil: I can set up the referral twice but people would have to put into two difference places. Maybe one store should be merged with another one?

        • @scotty:

For what it's worth, the "new" (current) app still shows the old domain in the referral page. Their heyyou.com domain still says "new website coming soon" and just tells users to "Continue to Beat The Q"…

So the solution is really just to keep the old domain, but reference both names in the description ("Hey You/Beat The Q").

  • Hi,
First - thanks to the mods for doing this - it's great for everyone!

I have a few questions/suggestions (so hopefully this is the right place)
    1) Any way to know which user used one of your links?
Be great to be able to say thanks (assuming they go on to meet the requirements for the referral link to benefit you)
    2) Any way to get an automatic message/notification when a link is used?
(I know about the updates in the details/edit/referrals page, but an automated notification if your code got used would be more user friendly)
    3) Are the referral links (random list) ever checked/refreshed - Basically what I mean is are dormant user accounts removed from the referral lists?

    Thanks again

  • Ratesetter have referral links between Sep 29 and Dec 31 for the first 1,000 referrals.

    https://www.ratesetter.com.au/referral_landing.aspx

The reward is $25 to the new member and $25 to the referrer.

I have two accounts with links if anyone is interested in signing up. Let me know.
    Cheers, Joel.

    • There's actually no deal from RateSetter on OzBargain — maybe people aren't interested at all?

      • I guess I'll try posting the $25 bonus as a deal. See if there is any interest.
They didn't really advertise it well, found it in a sub-link in my account.

  • +1

Groupon Australia has changed their referral system. Unfortunately there's no way to migrate the old referral ID to the new, therefore all the existing referral codes are purged. Please go to OzBargain's Groupon page now to put in your new referral ID.

  • Massdrop seems to have a referral system where it only benefits the referrer.
You get different tiers for number of friends who've joined using your referral link and bought something from them, they send you a giftbox according to the tiers.

    https://www.massdrop.com/r/******
or if it is within the deal:
    https://www.massdrop.com/buy/meelectronics-mee-what-exclusiv…

I am not sure whether follows OzBargain guidelines, but when I posted a deal this morning, it didn't pick up that it's referral.
Also, I am assuming this is something new, since this was the first time I had emails on referral from Massdrop.

  • I noticed that Cudo and LivingSocial (and a bunch of others) have a shared referral system. I don't suppose there's a way to have it so that you paste a referral code into one, and have it apply to the other(s)? LOL probably not worth the effort but thought I'd ask anyway.

  • Hi i've been reading this discussion and want to make sure my understanding is clear.
So referral websites need to be put up here first for consideration, i get that bit.
Do we wait until that is approved first before posting a deal?

Also when you post a deal is there a field in which you put in your referral code if you are the first one posting? (rather than account settings)
    Thanks

    • Hi jes,

So referral websites need to be put up here first for consideration, i get that bit.

Referral websites need to be suggested here to be put into the referral system. The referral system is the grey box that displays under a deal, it will display the OPs link (if they've entered their referral code into the system and the deal has reached 5 votes) and a random referral link. Example here

Do we wait until that is approved first before posting a deal?

You can post a deal if it isn't in the referral system, you can still add your referral link to the bottom of the deal (whether it is in the referral system or not). Example here. Guidelines for adding referral links to deals here to see what can and can't be added (don't worry if you make a mistake, a mod can fix it up).

Also when you post a deal is there a field in which you put in your referral code if you are the first one posting?

In regards to the referral system, you need to enter your referral codes here. You can add your referral codes before you post a deal, it will go into the referral randomiser whether you post a deal or not. If you post a deal for a site where your code is in the randomiser, then it will appear first below the deal (once it reaches 5 votes, until then only random links are shown). More info here

      Thanks

  • Are the referrals for Kleenheat broken? I notice the following deal does not show referral links: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223628

    • It looks like they have changed their domain from kleenheatng.com.au where the referral system was setup to kleenheat.com.au

Are the referral links on your account still the same format? Just without having ng in the domain? If so Scotty should be able to just switch the referrals over to the new domain and we can alias the old kleenheatng.com.au store to kleenheat.com.au

      • I suspect the referral links have changed accordingly. I have not received an email recently with one. Maybe the old referral links still work fine (I expect they do).
I have sent an enquiry to Kleenheat to ask whether the referral URL's are still the same.

        • Fixed up now. Scotty has moved referral system over from kleenheatng.com.au to kleenheat.com.au so it will display on current deal posts —-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223628

          Thanks

        • @hamza23: Thanks for sorting that. I had sent an enquiry to Kleenheat to ask what's up with the domain names, but they never got back to me.

  • I also noticed today when adding a PricePal like the referral format looks different (http://pricep.al/XXX) to the one in the OZB backend not sure if this means they will be ineffective of not.

    • No issues there, that link is the shortened version. If you click on it you will see it expands to the full link which we use in the OzBargain referral system. The shortened URL is mentioned in the description in the referral settings page.

      Thanks

  • Scotty,
Please consider adding Ingogo to the system , so others can add their codes for this deal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/224941

    • Looking at the Ingogo referral wiki, there are no links, just codes. At this point, it can't be added into the current system.

  • Can Appsumo referrals be added. (I just bought and have in the past bought items from these guys via ozB post)

Create an account and go to your settings page and select "Find Friends"
"Introduce them to us and earn $10.00 in AppSumo credits when a friend buys their first deal!"

    https://www.appsumo.com/account/findfriends/

Refferal link is in the form of http://www.appsumo.com/?r=XXXXX

  • Oops… forgot to edit the referral link.

Seems Amaysim have changed their referral link to a shortened form:

    http://amaysi.ms/r/xxxxxxx

Not sure if the xxxxxx is the same as the Account ID in the previous system though.

    • Not they are different. However if you follow your link it would then be redirected to the actual referral URL that we use. The problem of going to the new format is that all the existing referral data has to be wiped.

      • Thanks. Maybe include that bit (follow your link) in the instructions?

        EDIT:
        Example text:

Select "Refer a friend" in the menu and choose "link". Copy the link into a web browser and visit the page to get your Account ID.

(Leave the other bits as they are).

  • may i suggest add budgetdirect.com.au refer a buddy program where both partys get a $50 visa card to the list?

  • +1

We have just been notified that many of our Delivery Hero referral links aren't working. It looks like many have expired. We'll expire all the Delivery Hero referral links that are 90 days or older tomorrow morning.

    • Not only expired, but probably broken? Just tried entering my email address into the link and it just wraps back to the same page instead of giving me a referral code…

      • I tested yesterday and it seems to be working. However my email address was never on their system previously so they might have expired on the email address level.

        • I thought deliveryhero does not use referral scheme anymore.

      • I generated a new referral link/code okay in Chrome, my previous one had expired.

Just entered email here to get a new one.

        • Yeah, I must have hit some kind of limit (OzB says my referral was used 24 times and is obviously over 90 days old). I did use that URL (from the OzB referral page) and put in my email address, but it just refreshes and doesn't give me a new code.

I have the same problem regardless of what computer/browser I use.

        • @zzyss:

Ah yeah that rings a bell now, I think it happened some time ago that users were being blocked due to suspicious activity that had a lot of referrals/clicks. You'll need to email DH support to get it unblocked.

  • FYI Amaysim have shut down their referral system:

"Hi Caesar, refer a friend is getting a makeover.

So the $10 free credit thing isn’t happening right now.

But if you already think amaysim is awesome, why not share us with your friends anyway? Come on, save your pals the hassle of other telcos and share simple with them today.

Stuck for ideas on how to share amaysim? Here's a few ways:

    • Email a friend with: “Hey (name), you should totally try amaysim. I’m with them and they’re heaps good.”
    • Call a friend and say: “(name), you are totally going to froth over amaysim’s simple plans.”
    • Message a friend on Facebook: “With no lock-in contracts, (name) you can just try amaysim for 1 month or 100 months. No strings, bro!”

We'll be back with our new referral program soon, and it'll be rad."

    • Thanks. Looks like the new program would be different from the old. I'll have to remove all the existing Amaysim referral details.

  • Vitacost's referral links are now goo.gl links, and can't be entered in the vitacostrewards.com form that OzBargain requires.

Example referral link format: https://goo.gl/AAAAAA (code changed)

They seem to end up at http://stats.socialannex.com addresses with a lot of params. Can be seen by visiting https://goo.gl/AAAAAA.info (again, not a real link).

    • Probably not a good idea to allow random Google URL shorteners in there. We have not yet developed anything to verify the referral link yet. For now I'll disable vitacost's referral program, and might develop something later to bring it back.

      • Would it be simple/acceptable to accept http://stats.socialannex.com addresses and ask the user to expand manually by visiting the goo.gl .info page? Though I suppose it's then possible to link to other sites socialannex might provide referral services for…

        • Maybe you can decipher the stats.socialannex.com URL to tell me which one is the unique per-user ID :)

        • @scotty:

(ok, let's try that again… that was as an example dammit)

Well, my actual link is https://goo.gl/ANFxgg — if someone else can provide one I'm sure we could figure out what's unique.

Looks like it eventually redirects to the Vitacost sign-in page, and sacpn looks like a coupon/referral code. At least some of the other params are necessary to not end up at the standard signup page. Always ends up at the same link, whether local, through VPN, private browsing, etc.

          e.g. https://www.vitacost.com/MyAccount/CreateAccount.aspx?sacpn=SARCWDTR&service=2&site_id=2209221&saproductid=0&recrandom=2378624&share_type=14&share_type=14&cdata=2378624_2571448_2378624_90_0_NFN1XO2209221^4270^2308

Maybe it's enough to have people visit their own goo.gl links and copy the final querystring? Then you could restrict it to https://www.vitacost.com/MyAccount/CreateAccount.aspx

I don't know whether the old referral links still work, either.

  • Continuing on from last thread.

I'm wondering if the 1 week trial will be extended? And what may deem it successful or not?

    • Trial to have OP's link shown only after front-page? It's coming later today. Got an announcement to make and then I'll update the site.

      • Yep- No rush to have it implemented today.

Await the announcement and update eagerly.

        Thanks

    • I'm wondering if the 1 week trial will be extended?

It's NOT a 1 week trial! To be implemented this week.

You misunderstood (or I miswrote) my original comment. :)
