The M500 has been replaced by the M550 so I imagine that Crucial is offering discounts to sellers to move the stock on hand.

    • +6

good stuff CyberGenesys - a typical example of a seasoned ozbargainer who knows where to find what.

        • +1

Ah, but to quote U2, I still haven't found what I'm looking for (which was free shipping on Sandisk SSDs /hint hint ;)

        • haha…one of my fav U2 songs. You are thinking out loud there mate :P. SanDisk SSDs is in the pipeline :).

        • +1

You need to climb the highest mountains to find it

        • Any deals for msata?

        • +1

not yet…but we are still trying and hopefully we will able to do deals on them soon.

        • Looking to purchase a laptop. Should I restrict my choices to ones with msata option only!?

      • is the 480 faster than the 240gb? i read that somewhere

otherwise its more value to buy 2x240 and RAID0

        • 240GB
Sustained Sequential Read up to (128k transfer): 500MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write up to (128k transfer): 250MB/s

otherwise its more value to buy 2x240 and RAID0

I disagree. RAID0 is more trouble than it's worth, especially for home purposes, not to mention taking up two drive slots.

        • With RAID 0 you need to find the data on two SSDs. The data is also feed to the SSD fragmented. You're wasting a ton of your random I/O (the point of SSDs)

  • Good price but still no better than Amazon.

    • +11

It is in terms of warranty. Much better to deal with local store than shipping overseas.

      • +6

Yeah maybe Shopping Express can match the Amazon price from last deal (USD109) and we will buy : )

        • USD109 + shipping + exchange rate. It's quite close I think.

      • +1

        Well said , buy locally.

        • same price i would buy locally too. Looking at replacing my 250 2.5" hdd in my old inspiron 640m with one of the ssd, still thinking whether i should jump to this one

just wondering, how is this drive compare to Sandisk ultra plus 256 from amazon?
work about to be about $140AUD delivered. more exy if buy local for the Sandisk
the review from this site seem to favor the Sandisk but the review isn't that recent
          http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/SanDisk-Ultra-Plus-256G…

btw Rep, did you hint that the Sandisk SSD deal is in the pipeline? if it is i shall wait patiently

  • +1

    any samsung evo deals? :)

  • Did the maximum quantity of the 120gb model just change? I could have sworn I saw maximum 2 and as I was about to check out with PayPal a warning to say maximum quantity is 1.

    • +1

Yup - we've revised to maximum qty of 1 per model. THAT was the original limit but we've overlooked that part and ozbargain has reminded us that we forgot something :P.

      • Right, a few minutes earlier and I would have had my 2 purchased. Drat!

  • +4

So Stoked at these SSD Prices Dropping

  • for someone who does not care about that millisecond I might gain upon boot up or the millisecond I would gain whilst loading my programs etc will the 240GB be a good buy??

They are significantly ($20 plus) cheaper than any 240 or 256 on offer at MSY

    • +1

Yes, this is a good buy if you're not stressed about having the very fastest disk (which you shouldn't be).

    • Yeah a good buy, i'm thinking of grabbing one to replace my tiny 64gb SSD system drive.

  • plus how fast is shipping generally to Melbounre from ordering?

  • +1

Nice time to upgrade from my Corsair Force 3 that's now a few years old.

    Also there's a new firmware for the M500's - http://www.crucial.com/support/ssd/index.aspx?source=web

    Release Date: 03/25/2014
Firmware for the M500 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU03 to MU05. The M500 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU05 includes the following changes:
Improved Drive latency performance in applications with SMART polling
Improved Compatibility with 3rd party encryption management software
Corrected Reporting of SMART attribute 196 and 183
Increased thermal throttling response on 960GB Capacity for greater reliability
Corrected Upgrade issues experienced on MU03 by some customers
Numerous Bug fixes and stability improvements
Additional details can be found in the firmware guide

    • If I bought this drive how would I upgrade the firmware ?
Plug it into existing computer and use a program from windows?

Plug it into existing computer and use a program from windows?

That works about 4 times out of 10. The vendor-provided, firmware updating applications for any piece of hardware are always finicky and prone to failure.

The most reliable way is to download the manual boot file on the link 303-Acid posted (it's the "Download Firmware" button on the right), burn it onto a CD (use something like ImgBurn, no folders just place the files into the root of the CD) and simply boot from your CD/DVD drive and follow the prompts on screen (most motherboards should attempt to boot from optical media automatically if something is present in the drive, but if it doesn't, you simply need to go into your BIOS and change the boot order to ensure your optical drive has first priority).

For whatever reason I could not update my M500 480GB's firmware on this PC and needed to plug it into another computer and update it there and then move it back to my PC because for whatever reason, the firmware installer kept giving me errors. Usually making sure you have an up-to-date motherboard BIOS is a good idea too.

I will say that if you're having ANY issues with your Crucial SSD, definitely try posting on the Crucial SSD forum, as there are very helpful and knowledgeable people on there.

I bought one of the 120GB for $85 delivered. Thanks OP!

Please note "Australia Post eParcel + Insurance Cover" is also free.

    • I just bought one too, the discount applied to all the freight options. very nice! wouldnt be a true ozbargainer if I didnt click the most deluxe freight option for free :)

id love a 480gb if only i could get one for 250 :S

  • +1

I bought the 240GB. It's my first SSD.

  • +1

I'm in need of a 480GB but I guess I'll wait for a lower price.

  • I got the 480gb for $299 with the last deal, it took just 2days to get to my place so i was pretty happy with the service.

My Macbook pro is so much faster now, overall i 'm very happy with the drive so far.

  • damn i just bought 2 of those Sandisk Extreme II disks they had on special last week :(. Are these better? They are definitely cheaper.

    • +1

Sandisk Extreme II is faster. It may be 1-2 seconds faster in Windows 7 boot up. However, in general day to day use (unless you do a lot of heavy multi-tasking), you will probably not notice much difference. I normally put my PC to sleep, rather than shut down completely (even with SSD).

Windows 8 boot up, however… due to fast boot, you probably won't notice much difference in boot up.

  • ahhh this will be perfect for the refurbished dell laptop i just bought. thanks.

  • Does this work with Mac laptop?

    • mac? work? I thought apple just made kids toys.

    • Should work.

    • Yep.

  • Is there anything else I need to buy with these drives? Like a bracket, cables etc?

  • Is the read speed similar on all sizes 120gb/240gb/480gb? Is the only big difference the write speed?

  • +1

I found this article helpful regarding this ssd. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7864/crucial-m550-review-128gb…
