OzBargainAirFi

Dear OzBargainers,

I've received countless requests to run this deal again since last October. We just received our first shipment of the new Matrix2 headphones yesterday, so here it is.

The lowdown:

  • Air-Fi Runaway AF32 On-Ear Headphones: $44.99 ($30 off with coupon) - our bestselling wireless set. Available in 5 color combinations, the Runaway is lightweight and compact, and was tuned for a smooth, balanced sound.
  • Air-Fi Venture AF52 Over-Ear Headphones: $49.99 ($70 off with coupon) - our entry-level over-ear headphone. It delivers an enhanced-bass sound with straightforward Bluetooth operation.
  • Air-Fi Matrix2 AF62 Over-Ear Headphones: $79.99 ($70 off with coupon) - our flagship wireless headphone that has recently undergone a major revision, becoming the Matrix2. It has a few extra Bluetooth features over the Venture including an updated Bluetooth 4.0 chipset and support for aptX high-quality audio codec and NFC technology. The Matrix2 has a clearer and more "Hi-Fi" sound compared to the more bass-heavy Venture. It also has a nicer finish with the matte plastics, faux-carbon fiber inserts, and softer earpad cushions for a better overall look, feel, and comfort. A full list of updates compared to the original Matrix can be found on the product page.

All of these have built-in microphones for headset functionality, as well as built-in controls. They can also optionally be used wired (stereo audio cables are included). The Venture and Matrix can be used while charging. The battery life of the Runaway is about 12 hours per charge, the Venture can go about 18 hours, and the new Matrix2 can do approximately 22 hours between charges.

Coupon code is "OzBargainAirFi". All prices listed are in USD. There is a limit of 2 per order and the coupon will expire next Tuesday, 04/08/13, at midnight PST.

The coupon code also gives an additional $2.95 credit towards shipping. For those who use US forwarding services, this will give free postage to any US address. For everyone else it will just discount the total by an additional $2.95.

Our packaging has been revised since the last time this deal ran so the shipping rates are lower. There is a base charge of $8.95 for USPS 1st class mail, same as before, which does not change with the number of units. After that, the postage cost works as follows:

  • Each Runaway AF32 unit adds $5 to the overall postage cost
  • Each Venture AF52 or Matrix AF62 unit adds $10 to the overall postage cost

This means that international postage for two AF32 Runaways would be $8.95 + $5 + $5 = $18.95 before the $2.95 discount, $16 after. The postage for one Runaway and one Venture would be $8.95 + $5 + $10 = $ $23.95 before discount ($21 after), and so on.

Delivery times vary but are typically between 10 and 20 business days for the cheapest shipping method. FedEx shipping is also available at an additional cost and typically delivers in just a few days.

With our wireless headphones the goal has always been to deliver sound quality competitive not only with other wireless sets, but with similarly-priced wired headphones as well. The Runaway AF32, which was released in 2012, was recognized as one of cnet's best headphones under $100 and received other rave reviews from outlets such as PCAdvisor. The Venture was released last year and also has excellent reviews including a 4.5 star Amazon customer rating. The Matrix2 is only just being released now but the updates we have made are all based on customer feedback, and we are confident that it is our best Bluetooth set yet.

A note on compatibility - our headphones are compatible with Bluetooth devices that support A2DP for stereo audio. All modern smartphones and tablets (as long as they have Bluetooth built in) are compatible as well as Mac computers manufactured in 2011 or later. Windows computers are a little more complicated and require some setup but as long as the hardware is compatible (Bluetooth 2.1 or newer and A2DP support) it should be possible to set up a wireless headphone under Windows 7 or 8. The Matrix2 model also supports aptX, a higher-quality Bluetooth audio codec, as well as NFC. It will still work with devices that do not support these additional features. For those interested in learning mode about headphone Bluetooth there's a helpful article here

As usual, I'm happy answer any questions in the comments below as best I can. I can also be contacted by private message or email at customerservice(at)meelec(dot)com or directly at mike(at)s2einc(dot)com .

Just a free days ago, AF52 was less than $60 shipped. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/138639

As the manufacturer surely u can do better than that. Honestly at current price point you are selling at, not a bargain.

Sorry, guess Amazon gets better international shipping rates than we do.

      • Are you allowed to undercut Amazon on the product prices? Or is there some "arrangement"?

        • +7

There's what's called a MAP (minimum asking price) policy. If we're asking others to follow it, we shouldn't break it ourselves. Shipping credit is one way I can get around that but in this case it just looks like amazon is getting major discounts on international shipping compared to our rates. These headphones make for pretty heavy packages.

        • Thank you for the candidness.

It's all good. Most probably will get a Venture, at the moment,
and am undecided on getting a Maxtrix2 as well :-)

    • Apologize for my grammar, a little inconvenient when typing on a smart phone.

  • Would get the matrix2 if it had Multipoint! Is there a reason why the feature was removed?

    • Mostly because in its current state Multipoint is not the most user-friendly aspect of Bluetooth. It created a lot of support issues, especially with less tech-savvy users. If we ever implement Multipoint on a future Bluetooth product it'll have to be optional, and disabled by default.

  • Interesting how the AF32's promo shots are all carefully crafted to minimise bulkiness in the appearance of the earpieces. Notice the creative use of angles/hands/hair to help disguise it. Even big 80s hair is employed. Did find one exception here providing a truer appearance.

Not to take anything away from the headphones; just a random observation on the marketing aspect :D

    • Are you serious?

    • My God, how do you see the headphones amongst all that 80s Hair???

      Hint: Quite easily.

I ask the models to shave their heads every time we do a photo shoot, but they always want to be paid extra for it.

try avoid any male model during November…

I see most of the shots for the Venture have people with glasses on, with on ear headphones I find wearing glasses to be a major issue in not achieving a good seal and for comfort. Are the Venture better than the Matrix2 in that regard?

    • The Venture and Matrix2 are over-ear headphones unless you have large ears. They're the same size so I don't think there will be any difference in wearing comfort with glasses. I wear glasses myself and they haven't been a problem with these headphones.

(it's a coincidence that the Venture shots are the only ones featuring guys with glasses - those shots were taken "in the wild" while the Matrix2 pics are from a studio)

  • Hi Mike.

Regarding the minority unhappy reviews giving AF62 1-3 stars on amazon (mostly due to disconnecting issues on BT phone calls), are these isolated cases of faulty units? Or there are known problems you are aware of claims a couple of users?

What about the internal batteries once they become exhausted & unchargeable after the warranty period? Will you have spares available for a DIY replacement?

Just need some reassuring answers before diving into em.

Thanking U.. for spreading the l0v3@OZ

    • Those reviews are all for the old AF62 (Matrix1) - for some reason it did not interact with some people's phones very well. We could never reproduce the issue reliably. The Matrix2 uses a new Bluetooth chipset and is immune to that problem - we sent some of the early units to Matrix1 owners who had the issue just to make sure.

Regarding DIY battery replacement - it's only possible with a soldering iron. If you choose to do that, I do have some spares, but officially we don't recommend DIY battery fixes. We do have an out-of-warranty replacement program should the battery fail outside of the warranty period.

These batteries are rated for hundreds of charge cycles and I honestly don't see anyone going through more than two cycles per week (that's 40+ hours of listening time). Most people will go more than a week between charges.

      • I'm actually refering to:
        http://www.amazon.com/MEElectronics-Bluetooth%C2%AE-Wireless…

Which is the "MEElectronics Air-Fi Matrix2 AF62 Stereo Bluetooth® Wireless Headphones with aptX, NFC, and Headset Functionality (2014 version)"

But if you say so… good enough… I'll bite one.

        cheers.

        • The page title was updated but all of the reviews from the old Matrix have remained in place and it doesn't have the content for the new model yet. It also says "2 AAA batteries required.", which is definitely not true :/.

  • yikes… Air-Fi Matrix2 AF62 Over-Ear Headphones ends up being ($95.99USD = approx $120+ AUD = postage, conversion & credit card fees….) oh well early chrissy pressy.

  • Hello Mike,
If I wanted to use these headphones with my TV or non-bluetooth trasmitter device, how
would you suggest I go about it?

    Thanks!

    • +1

Well, you can use the included cable to plug them in the old fashioned way, but if you wanted to use them wirelessly you'd want one of those Bluetooth dongles that plugs into your device's headphone jack (or the RCA jacks on your TV, if you prefer). This sort of thing: http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics®-TT-BA01-Wireless-Bluetooth-Transmitter/dp/B004B8GF7Y . There are some that support aptX as well for better-quality audio with the Matrix2, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Avantree-Saturn-Wireless-Bluetooth-Ada…

  • How well do they work for phone calls? Not too many reviews out there on that aspect of them.

I'm after a BT headset for (mostly) podcasts and phone calls, with some music as well, for when I can't be bothered getting my IEMs out.

    • Sorry, this was for the AF62

      • +1

They work fine - the mic is not noise-canceling but it still works better than the ones on our wired earphone headsets, for example, probably because it's positioned closer to the mouth (it's on the edge of the left earcup that faces forward when they're on the head). If you're in a call center environment, on the other hand, then you'd probably want a directional mic with a boom.

  • How long it will take it for delivery to Australia?

    • +1

Depends on the selected shipping method. For the cheapest method it's typically 10-20 business days. FedEx is more like 2-5.

  • Hi Mike,
Do you plan in near future any promo for m9p or m9 earphones?
Could yous send me pm, becouse I couldn't send to you and can only answear :]

    regards,

    • Unfortunately I'm not allowed to initiate PM conversations, either because I'm a store rep or because I'm outside of Australia. You can send me an email though at mike(at)s2einc(dot)com and I'll provide a coupon code.
