The apps must be slow to sell.

SO for the NRL app, if you take up the free month, then pay per week until the end of the seaon it's about $50, vs $90 for the year. You coud even skip the finals as I assume they'll be on free tv, which will bring it to under $40.

Does any know if Android/ipad app disables HDMI out?

    • yea video out is disabled .on NRL app not all games are live - need to change location to watch some games. i cancelled mine as there were better quality alternatives to get all on tv screen

    • There is ways to make the iPad to HDMI work, but this isn't the forum to discuss it.

    • +2

I don't know, I haven't tried via HDMI on android, but they don't block miracast. I just use miracast via my HTC One and no probs. :)

The cheapest way is to buy $30 telstra sim packs when they are $10, then pay with the $30 telstra credit they give you.

  • As member of the Bulldogs, I was emailed a 4 week trial code.

Also handy to know that you can NOT do AirPlay :(

And the resolution on the iPad is limited too.

It is better if you have Foxtel with the sports bundle and using the Foxtel GO app.

Would anyone want to compare the prices for a Foxtel GO subscription to this?

    • +1

i can get AirPlay to work.

Open up Youtube and do airplay and then immediatelly open the afl app and it should display on the tv

  • I use the android app, you can miracast it to your tv. It also good that you can use telstra credit to pay for the subscription on google play, but once again that is only on android.

    • +1

You can use your iTunes account to pay for the subscription too, if you got the Harvey Norman 2x$20 for $20 deals.

      • That's true, half price instead of 1/3rd the price. I prefer android in this instance. :) Plus also the sim card can be used for data to watch the games.

      • Yeah this is exactly what I do. Just note that if you buy in-app subscription, you can't view live games on PC.

        • +1

I think if you subscribe via AFL site, it can be multi device accessible, but if you buy from the Android or iTunes App Store, it is only available on that device (correct me and cheaply insult me if I am wrong)

        • yes you are right, with Telstra ID, you can play on your laptop as well.
With play and itunes only on Mobile/Tablets
Quality is just amazing as long as you have a higher bandwidth

        • +1

No, via Android, its Multiple devices - I am able to access via my Nexus 7 tablet and my Nexus 4 phone and I subscribed via Google Play store.

        • So I assume that's a website you watch it from & thus HDMI out from the laptop can be connected to the TV?

        • Yeah its linked to your google account.

        • +1

THIS!!! DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF BY BUYING IN-APP SUBSCRIPTION. Sorry for caps but it needs to be seen. You might get an update to your phone or get given an ipad and then you can watch it on both, ONLY if you purchase this instead of in-app subscription.

        • +1

with App subscription, you cant play via browser

        • Damn, that is annoying that you cannot restore your purchases. Thanks for pointing this out.

I'm currently at the website now just comtemplating the four week deal. So far I can only see the standard two week one they have for free. I assume the code will make it four weeks.

          Daniel

      • I was just trying to figure out which JailBreak tweak will allow me to get free access. So far LocalIApStore does not work with it. I guess I'll try the rest after my free month.

  • Why can't you cancel the ongoing subscription straight away? Why wait until the end of the free trial?

    • to try to catch u off guard and make u pay for a week or 2

Better off signing up to unotelly (a smart dns service) for $5 a month and then using the NRLs free international livestreaming platform. new.livestream.com/nrl can watch all games live and on demand from this season and last season for free, in 720P. Supports all devices and plays in html5 on an iPad, so mirroring is supported to apple tv or via hdmi.

    • Wow, that is pretty awesome! I wish the AFL had that…. or do they?

edit: nope, 360p max resolution and $149 subscription required. boo!

    • Yeah but unless you fork out the $90, they insert ads every 10mins (it doesn't matter what's happening in the game), Also it's not 720P (on the Android app at least), it says it is, but it's not quite SD quality. I suspect it's 480P…if you don't it down to 480P you'll see the same quality.

      • the ads dont stop any game content, as the game is buffered and resumes to the second it was paused pre ad… so yea, just delayed 30, then 60 seconds… still good value (free)

      • There are no ads when you play the replays, only when viewing live. And as stated, you don't miss out on any gameplay, just is 30s-60s delayed. And when viewing on iPad or via pc it says it is 720p and at times it does look great, but id say that it's equivalent to 9 fta the rest of the time. Much better option than the nrls service though as you can actually output to a TV and it is far better quality, and cheaper!

Tried this out lastnight, just to see what it was like. For me the app version is better, cost wise for the app works out cheaper than $5/month if you factor in 1/3rd off. It would certainly be better than the app if you have a fast home connection but for many in Australia that isn't an option, the reason why I use the app is I can stream the games via 4g and the data isn't countered, so I get better picture than what I do with the livestream. :(

And you can still output to tv, the only downside to the app you lose some of the screen, but its better than no screen or streaming at 246p or whatever it is. But yeah use what works best for you. :)

      • Don't know how your saying the app works out cheaper :S 6 months of the season remaining. You get 1 month free with the app, it is then $1.99 a week or about $8 a month, equals $40 for the remainder of the season. Unotelly is $5 a month, so $30 for the remainder of the year. And with unotelly you gain accesses to services like Netflix, Hulu plus, bbc iplayer Etc which I strongly recommend people look into.

        • Because you can get it at 1/3rd the price by using telstra credit which I do, so its $8/3, so $2.33/month. Last time I checked $2.33 was less than $5? So it works out not quite half the price, plus you can access the nrl from anywhere you have mobile coverage. And I don't know why people neg comments when you are just informing people of alternatives..

Will this work on a Windows 8.1 tablet (Surface Pro 2)?

    • -2

      No.

    • +1

Yes from the browser not app

      • It doesn't support browser, I researched before I answered.

    • Yes if you use google play ….did it on the weekend

  • why does the site say it is only for two weeks?

    https://id.afl.com.au/livepass?ref=aflthanks

    • Once you enter the coupon code on the purchase page it changes to a month.

      • I forgot to enter the code and only got my two weeks free !

  • +1

Thanks OzBargain, you just reminded me to cancel my subscription! I was using the 2 week free trial, and would have been happy to continue paying for the service except:
-Can't watch the live streams on a PC / Laptop (only phones / tablets allowed)
-The stream isn't full screen (apparently due to broadcasting rights) which is particularly annoying on an already small phone screen
-There are restrictions when attempting to playing over HDMI / AirPlay from a mobile device

I might sign up again for specific rounds if I absolutely have no other choice, but out of principle I refuse to continue the subscription for such a ridiculously restricted service.

    • couldnt u run a virtualised android o/s with this running on ur PC and watch it that way - if u were really desperate to run this on a PC… think: large screen android tablet :)

      • Don't know, but worth a try. I have no desire to run it off my pc, its easier to just miracast it via phone/tab to tv.

      • Virtualised Android is not that good, it might have video playback issues or the app might detect and block it because they don't like it. You can try though.

  • If I'm not a Telstra customer, would it work if I get a $2 prepaid starter pack and activate without topping up any value? (Use the account ID to subscribe)

    • Don't quote me on this but I think I saw something that said you need to reload a minimum of $20 per month on a prepaid service…

  • I am a subscriber - just realised it says coverage Afl draft and Brownlow.

Didnt notice that last year? Is it TV coverage?

  • Anyone know where I can from time to time web stream live or even delayed AFL games? Not interested in Fox but would not object to a small fee to watch my team play when their games fit my home hours, which is not every week - in lieu of streaming the radio broadcast via the AFL website (better than nothing). I already occasionally watch games after the event when the replays are posted on the AFL website.

    • +2

YES!!! I watch all AFL games online and free and depending on streams its usually good… all games are shown through these sites…links appear 1 hour before game. Btw… i use chrome and download ad block extension ti block the ads.

      Websites:
      http://www.wiziwig.tv/competition.php?part=sports&discipline…
      http://gofirstrow.eu/sport/aussie-rules.html

As i said te links for gamesshould appear on he day of the game enjoy :)

      • Whats the quality like? Is it smooth? Europe server :o
Got the iOS in app sub, seems no way to watch on TV in 1080 unless you live outside Australia.

Think they want higher TV ratings.

      • good luck with finding a new keyboard!

      • Thanks, will give them a try.

  • when does this 1 month offer expire, since i think it was usually 2 weeks only for free?

    • +1

This one month offer expires on 1 September 2014.

  • Turns out you need a telstra sim too.. i have a bigpond internet service, isnt that enough. (profanity).

    • I had a terrible time trying to even give them my credit card details let alone get to the stage where you need to have a telstra sim.

Turned out it was cookies that was causing my grief and when I managed to work that one out, it then asked for my Telstra details but I did not have a Telstra account to give and the Telstra login I set up 10 minutes beforehand must be not considered a 'Telstra' account even though that is what they tell you to create if you do not have a home line (or I guess a T-Sim).

      Very disappointing experience.

Anyone actually get through this successfully without having to cough up your Telstra account details?

      Daniel

  • Has anyone had any problems selecting their Telstra postpaid plan as a payment option? Mine is greyed out and the techs on 24x7 have NFI. I don't want to use my CC as a payment option.

    • I think it is a cookie thing. Either turn your cookies on or browse from your mobile device (eg. Use an iPad with the 'Private' browsing turned off. Worked for me).

  • How do I get this to work on my laptop?

    • Can you be more specific?

  • I can't get it to load. When you click the "activate telstra" bla bla at the link above, it just keeps loading. Tried different browsers, clearing cookies etc. Nothing works.

    • I just went through the process again and didn't see an "Activate Telstra" button anywhere.

But it appears that it's going to let me use the code again… I cancelled my free month on Monday and it looks like the code is going to give me another 7 days free.
