ALDI Special Buys - 11.6" FHD Tablet+Keyboard $599, 55" 100hz LCD TV $799 (Wed 26 March)

90

Just received the latest Aldi Special Buys starting next Wednesday (26 March). A few things that might interest the OzBargain community:

Medion 11.6" Full HD Touch Notebook/Tablet — $599 (page 8)

Similar to Medion P2211T here but with a bit different spec. You should be able to find reviews on that unit on the web (for example this unboxing review from Mobilegeeks.de).

  • Intel Celeron N2920 processor (1.86GHz). It's actually an Bay Trial-M Atom CPU @7.5W. A bit more powerful than the Z3740 in ASUS T100, but not as fast as IvyBridge/Haswell.
  • 4GB RAM, 64GB Flash memory, 500GB HDD in base unit
  • 11.6" Full HD
  • Windows 8.1
  • Bluetooth / Wi-Fi / USB 3.0
  • Micro HDMI
  • 1.3MP front camera
  • Up to 10 hour battery life
  • 840g tablet + 840g base / keyboard

From the review it's actually not an IPS but AVHA panel. The interesting bit is the additional 500GB hard drive in the base unit / keyboard. Not sure whether it can be easily updated to SSD. At almost 1.7kg combined it's on the heavier side though.

Bauhn 55" (139cm) Full HD 100Hz LED TV — $799 (page 6)

  • Screen resolution: 1920x1080
  • 100MHz
  • 3x HDMI input
  • 22kg

The tv doesn't quite sound like a bargain.. all the LED tv prices have been dropping like leadin the past year. 2 years ago this would have been an insanely good price. Now, its… meh.

  • How does this compare to getting a 128GB Surface Pro? Would I have to queue up at an Aldi on Wed to be sure of getting one? Is it worth calling them the day before to ensure they have stock? How do they handle people at the door on the Wed? Is it like a 'Myer Sale' to grab one?

This looks like a toned down version of the asus tx300, the hard drive on keyboard is quite unique. Depends on what you want to do, the baytrails are slower than ulv chips but this just offers more utility compared to a surface (slightly bigger screen, hdd in keyboard and is included in price, longer battery). Seems like no wacom/Ntrig digitiser though.

If you don't need the grunt, go with this hands down. Better value, surface is more for power users really.

Wow 1.7kg, that's getting pretty heavy. I would stay away tbh, although nice fhd if the weight doesn't affect you

    • +1

Yea although the 1.7Kg is pretty much the whole laptop. The tablet on its own is not so bad really but great for taking to and from work and using at home. Perhaps not so 'portable' as an iPad Air!

The TV looks fine but you might get a better tv from Kogan, well I have 55 inch Android tv and it's pretty good I must say.

  • It's actually an Bay Trial-M Atom CPU

it's not a trial cpu scotty! it's Bay Trail

and the 500gb hdd in keyboard is unique, i've heard of some special version of the Asus T100 also with a hdd in dock but only sold in Europe(Germany?)

    • My pops has the i7 asus tx300. You can get them in some computer shops like arc, but they are quite rare and underrated.

These convertible tablets/laptops with celeron processors are duds.

be wary, this will be slow as shit. Look up reviews for the Dell Inspiron 11 to compare a similar CPU

    • So are you saying that the Dell Inspiron 11 with the same CPU is a dud?

    • +1

As long as the CPU mark score over 1000 level in pass mark, the device is good enough.
Consider back in 2006 the pentium d at 3ghz score pretty much the same.

It has 4gb ram which is very generous, if that dock in the hdd can be changed, then bty should last longer

If I hadn't had the Samsung ativ 5, I would get this.

      • So the CPU has a CPU Speed Mark of 1674, the i5 in the Surface Pro has a CPU Speed Mark of 3121 . Sure the dock has a hard drive but you can pick up a 500GB Portable and plug this into the Surface Pro can't you. I think the Pro is still the better buy…albeit you do have to get a keyboard for the Pro. The weight is pretty similar on both.

The advantage of this transform book is the battery.
Surface Pro ONE has a good CPU, but its battery performance is SO BAD, it cant even match the last gen Z2Xxx series.
for school use, word processing and so on.

This ALdi one is more than enough.
Windows since windows 7 has been very resource efficient.
More so for Win 8, as it was designed to run with mobile chipset in mind made it able to run on any thing post 2007 as long as they got more than 2GB ram.

One good thing about the weight of the dock and the tablet is that they are equal. Many detachable tablet users have found out that having next to nothing in the dock results in a back-flipping laptop.

    • Yes, the Asus T100 we all love actually has a 210 gram (removeable) metal plate in the dock for just that reason.

  • Be nice if their website had the manual for the TV.

  • Pity it doesn't have an active pen. I think it will start to be a deal if ALDI put this down to 400 in the next months.
Has anyone grab one in 1st person so as to have a say on how bad is (or not) the screen?

  • I might buy the ultra book and use it for 55 days. If good, keep it. If bad, get a refund.

It has a lot more spec than this $626 ultra book with only 3 cell battery.

  • Does this tablet have a extra battery in the base or is it 10hours just on the battery in the tablet itself?

Edit: according to the youtube video; 2cells in the tablet 3cells in the dock

    • Next question; is the 64GB flash drive upgradable ie a mSATA device?

  • +2

There is a good German review on it somewhere and the the verdict was like 82% rating or something. It is a tad slower than the T100 but has a bigger screen, doesn't get as hot and is a little brighter. Here it is: http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Medion-Akoya-P2211T-P2212T… I am definitely thinking of buying one.

    • Thanks for the link, it answered my question above (essentially the 64GB system drive cannot be upgraded). It helped me decide that this device is not for me. The system drive is just too slow, after true SSD performance I don't think I could return to something below mechanical speeds.

    • +2

Keep in mind that this is theoldermodel, with only 2 GB ram, and slower cpu. Most of the rest should be the same and similarly relevant.

      • Thanks. I wasnt aware if thar. Might just have to buy one and see how it goes.

  • Would love to hear from anyone that buys this. Still on the fence about it.

  • +2

I got one of the 11.6" tablets today at Baulkham Hills NSW around 11am.

Too early to give a detailed verdict, but so far I'm pretty happy with the bang for buck…

    • Thanks. Would appreciate any more info/impressions as you get them.

        I hate the mouse/trackpad.

It doesn't have separate buttons so you press the trackpad to imitate a mouse click. It doesn't seem to work very consistently at all. Perhaps I'll get used to it, but my first impression is that I hate the trackpad…

        • +1

Thanks. How dies it feel speedwise/loading times?

        • I would recommend to just try to get used to it, as most people switching from the two button mouse to these have to adjust. Now most mouse pads on laptops/notebooks/ultrabooks/docks, have this design. You will adjust, and in the long run even prefer this design, it has benefits too.

    • Do they have a pallet of this tablet in stock or just few per store?

It would be great if you could test the battery life on the tablet.

      • +1

Only a few. There are stacks of the 55" LED.

  • ANyone know if these support WiDi to send display to a compatible screen wirelessly?
