  • Am I too demanding, or is paying more than $150 for a tablet really reasonable?

I'm getting to used to pendoPads and assorted other el cheapo crap sold at Coles etc

I'm getting to used to pendoPads

There's a stigma associated with being a pendophile.

I bought mine for around $500 before the flood of cheap tablets and I not regretting it. Value for money might be subjective but build quality matches the price tag IMHO. It's beautiful and not Apple.

        • 1 on this.

Besides being one of the lightest 10" tablet around, it is also the most water resistant tablet with excellent battery life

        • It's a bloody nice tablet…I borrowed one off a friend in Dec to look at replacing one which my 2yo decided that TalkingTom was thirsty & needs a drink. Alas the $500+ price tag was too much.

The screen is great, and it's very lightweight, it almost had me.

        • Waterproofing (seals, port covers sturdy) any good?

    • For android/ios id say so.

  • it says

Redeem $200 Sony Entertainment Voucher till 31/12/2013*

So doesn't that mean it's now more expensive? (it would have been $339 ?)

    • I got an email from Shopping Express about their Sony Sale today listing it at $399 so I think that price is current even though the redemption offer listed on their product page appears to be old/expired.

        • Removed the expired promotion from the listing -

        Cheers

        • What about the LTE version? I wonder how tablets can be sold without WCDMA connectivity?

        • +2

Lots of people use these larger tablets at home, e.g. in the living room while watching TV, in bed reading news, that sorta thing. There's no point paying extra for an LTE radio then.

I do wish every manufacturer would consistently offer both wifi and LTE models though.

        • +3

Yeah, no real need for me to have built-in 3G/LTE. Even when not at home, i just tether to my iPhone for connectivity.

    Yay .. Xperia Z Tablet Sale .. Shopping Express ??? Sigh …

    • what's wrong with shopping express?

      • +3

They've been great to deal with, for me.

        • +5

Maybe he/she's confusing it with shoppingsquare, or just had a personal bad experience with shoppingexpress

        • +2

          reply eug : Same here

        • +2

yeah, they've done nothing but good things for me too. or A+++++ in ebay talk

    • +1

yeah they've been great for me…

These were $399 pick-up in person at DSE and Good Guys recently on clearance. Before the Tablet Z2 was announced. I'm genuinely undecided as to whether the tablet Z is still worth that much…. :/ It is a very nice looking and handling tablet, though.

Tablet Z2 has a $599 RRP (so probably expect $550 or so actual price on launch?)

I picked mine up from Harvey Norman by price matching purely because I had gift cards. Very happy with it, but I think you should be able to obtain it for the same price in a bricks and mortar store.

      • +1

Given that this is going to be replaced, I am surprised that it isn't at the $399 price point again (since the DSE deal).

Hey Rep, can you save me a trip to Hadly Normal or JB, and do free shipping to major cities? If so, I might pick one up tomorrow.

Also, I presume you are collecting GST and issue tax invoices for TRS purposes?

  • It's a fantastic tab but please note that it was this price (from this website) before Christmas and that the Xperia Z2 will be out within a few weeks.

I think this tablet's price will drop even more in the coming month or two, but honestly? For what it offers, the price is very reasonable. And my guess is that the Xperia Z2 will be around $600 and it really isn't enough of an upgrade, imo.

    • What has the Z2 above this one? Too lazy to google it, and sincve you know the details ….

      • known features

2 is twice as many as 1 so naturally there is that

        http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/127442-sony-xperia-z2-tablet…

seems to be better screen, and weighs even less

so not really that much considering the screen was already really good, and the weigh difference is practically nothing

        • From all the store displays I've seen the screen is pretty dull with poor viewing angles, much like the Xperia Z and Z1. The Z2 tablet and phone is meant to have a much better screen. The screen was the biggest turnoff for me with the Z, Z1, and tablet z.

        • +2

Companies with crap viewing angles screens should should trademark them as 'privacy protection technology' or some such that protects from random people reading your emails over the shoulder :P

I don't see it much as an issue (personal opinion), I am dexterous enough to tilt a phone so that I can see it. Cgaf if no-one else can.

        • Good for you. Obviously other people use their phones and tablets differently to you, which has nothing to do with dexterity. The world is bigger than just your needs - your way is not the one and only way to use a device (personal opinion).

        • +4

I apologise if I came off a bit rude, I just re-read my comment and I kind of sound like a dick. I meant "I don't care if no-one else can see the screen while I am using it, that is not a feature I use" not "screw everyone who can't tilt a screen". My bad.

        • +2

Wow, that's rare. Someone on the net who actually apologises when there's a miscommunication. Good on you. :)

    • Not sure about that. I've been watching these for a while, and I don't think stores are carrying too much stock of these. Also, if the previous model (Tablet S) is anything to go by, the price doesn't plummet once the model is superseded.

As with Apple, I believe the manufacturers don't wish to allow their prices to fall too significantly.
